Cities in a Changing World

HOW SHOULD OUR NEIGHBOURHOOD CHANGE TO BECOME MORE SUSTAINABLE?

By Maneesh Tekwani
In Humanities, We have been looking at several different networks in different cities and how each of this aspects are needed to be used in order to make a system more sustainable. We have also starting to look at alternative ways to make systems more sustained and how this has started in several places around the world. Our Task for this Unit (Cities in a Changing World) is to investigate into one of the neighborhoods near our school (I will be investigating into Sukhumvit Soi 11). For this Investigation, We are needed to investigate in to one of the three aspects (either Movement, Design or Environment) of the Soi. In order, to write a well-written investigation we are needed to go take a trip towards the Soi/Neighborhood and by investigating we are needed to create a report. This Report should discuss the state of the Soi, its relationship with the aspects chosen (I have chosen to Design) and decide create a solution to make the Soi more sustainable. We are also needed to talk about how NIST could address this situation and work towards a better future by addressing this situation.

ACTION PLAN:
This is the action plan that was made to help us organize the time that has been given to use and make good use of time. Below you can see the Action Plan that was created for this task and it is organized with the action that is going to be done, basic steps to complete the action, the date of when you are testing and specific resources to help complete the action.

Basic Steps

Clearly Read and Understand the Task that is needed to be completed (What is expected from us?) and Maybe Ask Questions among Peers or Mr Phillip to clear any doubts. Choose One of the Three different aspects (Movement, Design, or Environment) to go more in depth and

-Read through the task sheet once more Alone (on your own) and Understand, What is needed to be completed for this task/assessment? - Ask Any Questions to help clear any remaining doubts with Mr Phillip and/or Peers in the Class.

Camera, Google Maps (https://www.googl e.com/maps/)

- Go to the Soi and answer the questionnaire/survey created before and use it to show how severe this issue is and the importance for a solution towards this problem. Follow the Step provided below: - Create a Survey/ questionnaire over the features that affect the Design Problems giving each penalty points to recognize how severe the issues are and how severe they are individually. - Create a Tab named Final Score of the Sum of all the Penalty Points to show how severe the issue is overall. -Interview some of the residents/ about their thoughts on the Design of the soi. Ask questions related to what would they rate the Design of the Soi and why, issues with the Soi, causes of these issues, how do these issues affect their lives, etc.

The Sections should be in the Order as presented below: 1st Column: Research Question 2nd Column: Significance of the Research Question (How the information you plan to collect is relevant to investigate the changes that are necessary to make our neighbourhood become sustainable?) 3rd Column: Method of finding out an answer to the research question 4th Column: Answer Towards the Question

How should NIST address the problem? Create a plan for sustainability. Here are some questions as a guide:
What is your recommendation for how to manage the issue? Why is management of the problem necessary? How easy/difficult is it to implement? What is required to do it well? How would the Soi change as a result? How would the quality of life for the inhabitants improve?

I Have Chosen to Research into the Design of Sukhumvit Soi 11. I have decided to investigate into this Soi, as my dads office is located somewhere near by the Soi and most of his employees live in Soi 11 or Walk Past Soi 11 daily. I feel that this would make it very easy for me to Investigate as Soi 11 my dads office and I go there often. I have decided to investigate into the Design Aspect of Soi 11 as, it can easily be seen that there are issues related to the design of Soi 11 but there isnt anyone doing anything about it. This is why I want to see what can be done to improve the design of the Soi make the Soi/Neighborhood more sustainable. Below you can view that I have written several research question to help me find out more about the certain Soi that Ill be investigating into. For each of the question, I have also identified how the information I plan to collect is relevant to investigate the changes that are necessary to make our neighborhood become sustainable and how can I retrieve the information. Once I complete this Stage, the Information would display on the table.

Research Question (Questions to Inquire into)

What does Soi 11 Look in The Terms of Design/ What is the Current State of the Design in Soi 11?

Significance of the Research Question (How the information I plan to collect is relevant to investigate the changes that are necessary to make our neighbourhood become sustainable?) This is Significant for Researching into as it and could result in helping me get an understanding of the Sois Current State and could be used as proof to be used in the essay.

Method of Find Out Answer towards the Question (Any Links used for this Stage are Presented Here) The Method that I will use to find out an answer for this question is by using Google Maps or by visiting the Soi Capturing Images/Photo s. The Method that I will use to find out an answer will be

How would Residents or People who Pass the Soi Rate the Overall Design of the Soi? How does it affect the quality of life for members of the community today?

What are the cause and the effects of poor design in Soi 11 and How does it affect the quality of life for members of the community today?

This is Significant as we can see want is affect the design or in other words what is causing the poor design of the Soi and how does this effects pedestrian on the streets.

The Method that I will use to find out an answer for this Stage of the Investigation would be by interview People that walk this Soi often or are residents in Soi 11. Ask questions related to what would they rate the Design of the Soi and why, issues with the Soi, causes of these issues, how do these issues affect their lives, etc. The Method that I will use to find out an answer towards this question (Inquiry Question) by Using the Photos and Look at Few Causes and

decide to walk on the roads rather than the Sidewalks. Cause annoyance for those the walk on the Pavement.

Poorly Constructed footpaths

Under the law, a space of one metre has to be set aside as a walkway for pedestrians, and vendors are allowed to set up stalls only on one side of the pavement. Can anybody find any pavement on Bangkok streets which follow this rule? Obviously, the answer is none. - Bangkok Post (http://www.bangkokpost.com/learning/lea rning-from-news/225303/sidewalks-forpeople-to-walk-on)

How are other cities and communities managing this problem?

This is Significant to find/research because this could help us find out few ways in which we can manage this issue and find out a way to solve this issues by taking an overview of the possible ways to solve this issue.

The Method to find out an answer to this question we Are needed to Search the Internet for several cities that have faced the same issues and solution that the cities have decided.
