Belden Variable Frequency Drive Cable Termination Instructions:

Unarmored VFD Cable:

Ideally the shield and jacket will be intact all the way back to the drive and we will not introduce any jumping off points for the Common Mode Currents carried on the common mode current containment system. In this case no special tools or materials, or termination kits are required to properly and effectively terminate the VFD cable system. The introduction of shield grounding cable glands should be avoided at enclosure ingress as they introduce jumping off points for common mode current into the metal work and can create undesired and uncontrolled electrical noise. Intermediate termination of the cable elements on any terminal blocks should be avoided, as the terminations may significantly reduce the ability of the shielding system to conduct harmful high frequency currents. The outer jacket system of the cable serves an important role in isolating the Common mode Current containment system. The outer jacket should not be removed unnecessarily before the cable enters the drive proper, as this introduces the potential for uncontrolled ground currents.

Instructions for Foil Braid Constructions: Drive Mounted In an External Enclosure-Foil Braid Constructions:
1) Ingress the enclosure with an Isolating cable gland with a suitable protection rating for the enclosure and the environment. Allow a sufficient length of cable to easily reach the drive without unnecessary cable strain. Do Not Remove the Outer cable Jacket. 2) Secure the cable with suitable cable ties, or through cable duct as appropriate. 3) If the drive is drive is open style, route the jacketed cable assembly back to the drive vicinity. 4) If the drive is in an internal enclosure, ingress the drive through a suitable insulating cable gland. 5) Neatly remove the Outer Cable Jacket, exposing sufficient conductor to reach the drive terminals, while still leaving some excess conductor length for trimming after neatly routing to the drive terminals. 6) It is desirable to combine the shielding drains and braid for termination intact at the ground terminal of the drive 7) Push back the remaining braid towards the jacket, causing the braid to bulge and open. 8) Push the primary conductors and ground through an opening in the braid, separating the intact braid system from the conductors 9) Remove the exposed Duo-foil shield where exposed 10) De-cable the exposed conductors and drain 11) Combine the drain and braid wires by twisting them together

Shrink this piece completely. 15) Secure the cable jacket to the drive or enclosure if it is not secured by a cable gland. 16) Route and trim the conductors to the power terminals, leaving sufficient material for phase reversal if necessary. 17) Terminate the motor leads per the drive manufacturers recommendations 18) Trim the ground wire to sufficient length to reach the drive ground terminal 19) Heat shrink the drain wire covering and trim to length for connection to the drive ground terminal. Strip to expose conductor as necessary. 20) Terminate the ground and drain per manufacturers recommendations.

Armored VFD Cable:

Ideally the armor, shield, and jacket will be intact all the way back to the drive and we will not introduce any jumping off points for the Common Mode Currents carried on the common mode current containment system. In some cases because of space or other practical constraints, it is desirable to terminate the armor at the enclosure ingress. In this case, special care must be taken to avoid introducing jumping off points for common mode current The introduction of shield grounding cable glands should be avoided at enclosure ingress as they introduce jumping off points for common mode current into the metal work and can create undesired and uncontrolled electrical noise.

The following procedure should be used when it is necessary to terminate the armor at the External Enclosure Ingress Point: Instructions for Foil Braid Constructions:
1) Neatly remove the outer jacket and armor, exposing sufficient conductor length to reach the drive with some excess for trimming and routing. Note: It is desirable to maintain shield integrity around the cable as it routes back to the drive. This will reduce EMI/RFI emissions, and resulting electrical complications. If the exposed bare shield is routed back to the drive, incidental contact with metal work or bare grounds could introduce undesirable ground loops and jumping off points for common mode current. 2) Apply heat shrink tubing, or vulcanizing electrical tape around the exposed bare braided shield on the full length of the stripped conductors. 3) Thread the prepared cable through an Isolating Armor Termination Gland. A suitable gland will be available through your Belden Distributor. If an Isolating Gland cannot be found then an isolating bushing is highly recommended for use with any armor type conductive cable gland. Note that the use of a conductive bushing without proper isolation will release the common mode currents carried on the cables containment system, and can have unpredictable and undesirable effects on sensitive equipment or systems. 4) Route the prepared conductors back to the drive through a suitable path; maintain necessary physical separation from sensitive circuits. 5) Secure the cable with suitable cable ties, or through cable duct as appropriate.

6) If the drive is drive is open style, route the jacketed cable assembly back to the drive vicinity. 7) If the drive is in an internal enclosure, ingress the drive through a suitable insulating cable gland. 8) Neatly remove the heat shrink tubing, or Vulcanizing tape, exposing sufficient conductor to reach the drive terminals, while still leaving some excess conductor length for trimming after neatly routing to the drive terminals. 9) It is desirable to combine the shielding drains and braid for termination intact at the ground terminal of the drive 10) Push back the remaining braid towards the jacket, causing the braid to bulge and open. 11) Push the primary conductors and ground through an opening in the braid, separating the intact braid system from the conductors 12) Remove the exposed Duo-foil shield where exposed 13) De-cable the exposed conductors and drain 14) Combine the drain and braid wires by twisting them together 15) Apply heat shrink tubing to the drain and braid, shrink the first 2-3 inches closest to the cable jacket, sufficient to secure the tubing. Do not shrink the entire length yet. 16) Milk the outer jacket along the cable so it covers the exposed edge of the foil shield. 17) Apply 3-5 Inches of heat shrink tubing over the entire cable assembly, centered at the strip point for the protective covering. Shrink this piece completely. 18) Secure the cable jacket to the drive or enclosure if it is not secured by a cable gland. 19) Route and trim the conductors to the power terminals, leaving sufficient material for phase reversal if necessary. 20) Terminate the motor leads per the drive manufacturers recommendations using lugs, ferrules, or terminal block. 21) Trim the ground wire to sufficient length to reach the drive ground terminal 22) Heat shrink the drain wire covering and trim to length for connection to the drive ground terminal. Strip to expose conductor as necessary. 23) Terminate the ground and drain per manufacturers recommendations.

Instructions for Copper Tape Shield Constructions:

1) Neatly remove the outer jacket and armor, exposing sufficient conductor length to reach the drive with some excess for trimming and routing. Note: It is desirable to maintain shield integrity around the cable as it routes back to the drive. This will reduce EMI/RFI emissions, and resulting electrical complications. If the exposed bare shield is routed back to the drive, incidental contact with metal work or bare grounds could introduce undesirable ground loops and jumping off points for common mode current.

2) If the copper tape was damaged or removed during the armor and Jacket removal, it is desirable that the shield integrity be restored by the application of an EMI screening copper tape shield. Apply copper tape, such as a 3M Shielding EMI tape, typically available where Belden Cables are sold. 3) Apply heat shrink tubing, or vulcanizing electrical tape around the exposed bare copper shield on the full length of the stripped conductors. 4) Thread the prepared cable through an Isolating Armor Termination Gland. 5) Route the prepared conductors back to the drive through a suitable path; maintain necessary physical separation from sensitive circuits. 6) Secure the cable with suitable cable ties, or through cable duct as appropriate. 7) If the drive is drive is open style, route the jacketed cable assembly back to the drive vicinity. 8) If the drive is in an internal enclosure, ingress the drive through a suitable insulating cable gland. 9) Neatly remove the heat shrink tubing, or Vulcanizing tape, exposing sufficient conductor to reach the drive terminals, while still leaving some excess conductor length for trimming after neatly routing to the drive terminals. 10) Remove the exposed Copper Tape Shield 11) De-cable the exposed conductors and grounds 12) Combine the exposed ground wires by twisting them together 13) Apply heat shrink tubing to the grounds, shrink the first 3-5 inches closest to the cable jacket, sufficient to secure the tubing. Shrink this piece completely. 16) Secure the cable jacket to the drive or enclosure if it is not secured by a cable gland.

17) Route and trim the conductors to the power terminals, leaving sufficient material for phase reversal if necessary. 18) Terminate the motor leads per the drive manufacturers recommendations. Use lugs and ferrules as appropriate. No special pieces are required. 19) Trim the ground wire(s) to sufficient length to reach the drive ground terminal 20) Heat shrink the ground wire covering and trim to length for connection to the drive ground terminal. Strip to expose conductor as necessary. 21) Terminate the ground per (drive) manufacturers recommendations.

The following procedure should be used when the Armor can be terminated in direct contact with the drive chassis on a suitably grounded location.
In this case it may be suitable to use either a grounded or isolated armor termination gland. The internal construction of the drive determines which technique is more suitable. Note that if a conductive gland is selected, and if other sensitive signals pass through this same interface through conductive glands, ground currents released could potentially find their way on to other signals such as encoder or analog reference or feedback signals. An isolated gland on Motor power leads, or signal leads would be recommended to prevent interaction of the common mode current with the signal level I/O. Always follow the drive manufacturers recommendations if they are available for armored cable termination.

A suitable gland will be available through your Belden Distributor. An Isolating Gland, or a conductive gland may be best suited to the installation. Follow the manufacturers recommendations for the cable type in use. 3) It is desirable to combine the shielding drains and braid for termination intact at the ground terminal of the drive 4) Push back the remaining braid towards the jacket, causing the braid to bulge and open. 5) Push the primary conductors and ground through an opening in the braid, separating the intact braid system from the conductors 6) Remove the exposed Duo-foil shield where exposed 7) De-cable the exposed conductors and drain 8) Combine the drain and braid wires by twisting them together 9) Apply heat shrink tubing to the drain and braid, shrink the first 2-3 inches closest to the cable jacket, sufficient to secure the tubing.
