ASTM D1265 Sampling Liquefied Petroleum Gases (Manual Method This standard is issued under the fixed designation

D 1265; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year of original adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision ! number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval ! superscript epsilon "e# indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval This practice covers the procedures for obtaining representative samples of li$uefied petroleum gases such as propane, butane, or mixtures thereof, in containers other than those used in laboratory testing apparatus These procedures are considered ade$uate for obtaining representative samples for all routine tests for %& gases re$uired by 'pecification D 1()5 except analysis by Test *ethod D 216) They are not intended for obtaining samples to be used for compositional analysis ! sample procedure that avoids changes in composition must be used for compositional analysis NOTEPractice D 3700 describes a recommended method for obtaining a representative sample of a hydrocarbon fluid and the subse uent preparation of that sample for laboratory analysis! This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns" if any" associated #ith its use! $t is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use! !eferen"ed Do"uments ASTM Standards# D 1()5 'pecification for %i$uefied &etroleum "%&# +ases D 216) Test *ethod for !nalysis of %i$uefied &etroleum "%&# +ases and &ropene ,oncentrates by +as ,hromatography D )-.. &ractice for ,ontaining /ydrocarbon 0luid 'amples 1sing a 0loating &iston ,ylinder

Summar$ of Pra"ti"e ! li$uid sample is transferred from the source into a sample container by purging the container and filling it with li$uid, then providing 2. 2 outage so that (. 2 of the li$uid volume remains Signifi"an"e and %se 'amples of li$uefied petroleum gases are examined by various test methods to determine physical and chemical characteristics The test results are often used for custody transfer and pricing determination 3t is therefore essential that the samples be representative of the product to be tested

,onsiderable effort is re$uired to obtain a representative sample, especially if the material being sampled is a mixture of li$uefied petroleum gases The following factors must be considered4 5btain samples of the li$uid phase only 6hen it is definitely 7nown that the material being sampled is composed predominantly of only one li$uefied petroleum gas, a li$uid sample may be ta7en from any part of the vessel 6hen the material being sampled has been agitated until uniformity is assured, a li$uid sample may be ta7en from any part of the vessel 8ecause of wide variation in the construction details of containers for li$uefied petroleum gases, it is difficult to specify a uniform method for obtaining representative samples of heterogeneous mixtures 3f it is not practicable to agitate a mixture for homogeneity, obtain li$uid samples by a procedure which has been agreed upon by the contracting parties Directions for sampling cannot be made explicit enough to cover all cases They must be supplemented by 9udgment, s7ill, and sampling experience :xtreme care and good 9udgment are necessary to ensure samples which represent the general character and average condition of the material 8ecause of the ha;ards involved, li$uefied petroleum gases should be sampled by, or under the supervision of, persons familiar with the necessary safety precautions

NOTE%amples to be tested for presence of corrosive compounds or sulfur compounds should be ta&en in stainless steel containers e uipped #ith stainless steel valves' other#ise" determinations of mercaptans and hydrogen sulfide" for e(ample" can be misleading! /ydrocarbon vapors vented during sampling must be controlled to assure compliance with applicable safety and environmental regulations
