Wesley Hager Emilia Grant ENGL - 1102 094 25 March 2014 Project Summary I decided to write about the

e impact of piracy as my inquiry topic because it was something I was familiar with and it coincides with my Pop Culture Essay. I am a computer science major so I spend a lot of time on the computer. With so much time spent on the internet there is no surprise that I would look into pirating. The hardest part about writing this inquiry will be staying focused on my topic and keeping my ideas flowing as one. I currently have five sources. Three articles from NewsBank, a print on "Journal of Communication Inquiry", and a YouTube video. Mike Swift was a secondary source and wrote about the Viacom lawsuit against YouTube for one billion dollars about hosting copyrighted content. The main idea I am using is who is responsible? It connects to the impact because of the legal decisions on the issue of "user-generated content". The second article by Christina Gostomski was also a secondary source and talked about college students being large contributors towards piracy. It is up to the universities to prevent this type of traffic over their networks. I am attempting to connect college students from the United States and college students from Singapore. The last article, a secondary source by Ben Parr, connects social media as a contributor of

spreading piracy and strengthens the ideas that piracy has good effects for helping build fan base. Mark Cenite assisted in writing a book about a study conducted in Singapore on university students. This was written as a primary source as it used the information collected in the study to better understand the motivations of why people download and upload illegal files. This connects to my main topic because to understand the impact of piracy I must also understand why people participate in such acts. The YouTube video by Josh brings together a both sides of piracy while combining a few examples of how the affects. The video is secondary source because his information based of a book on copyright culture. My ultimate goal for this inquiry is to represent all the good and bad about piracy allowing the reader to make up their own mind about piracy based on facts. This is an inquiry paper so the research provided needs to lead to some conclusion; however, I see the answer being that no matter the opinion about piracy, people will continue to do it. While I have several solid sources with great information I think there are still pieces that could help bridge ideas. I have not started to write my inquiry so I can say with certainty what I still lack in resources.
