YEAR 5 NEWSLETTER SUMMER TERM 2014


Dear Parents/Carers, Welcome to the Summer Term. This term promises to be just as busy as the previous one.

The teachers in Year 5 are:

You need to make sure that your child attends school regularly and is punctual. If your child is absent from school, you need to telephone the school on 020 8556 0103, giving a reason for their absence and provide a note when they return to school. Physical Education PE takes place every Thursday for Year 5. Children must remember to bring their PE kit which includes: Navy blue or black shorts or tracksuit bottoms Plain white T-shirt Plimsolls or trainers Please ensure that all of your childs clothing is named (including their school uniform) and placed in a bag.

Summer Term Trips We are planning a visit to Legoland later this term. Details will be given to you as soon as arrangements have been finalised. As always, we welcome any help and support from parents on any visits we arrange in the future. Please let us know if you would be interested in helping. Curriculum Our topics for this term are: Numeracy Shapes, Measures and Calculator skills. Handling data, Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. Children will work extensively on solving word problems and calculations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Literacy Fiction (Narrative): Older literature including narrative poems and film narrative. Children read extracts aloud and watch extracts of classic TV/film adaptations. Pupils also hear, read, and experience performance poetry, both on paper and in actual performance. They continue to work on their comprehension skills and spelling. Children will write from a range of genre and compose whole texts and, sometimes fragments of texts. Science Earth Sun and Moon: children investigate the shapes and relative sizes of the Earth, Sun and Moon. Using models pupils learn how the three bodies move relative to each other and how these movements relate to night and day. Changing state: children will look at evaporation and condensation. They will also be expected to plan and carry out scientific investigations. RE Hinduism: Pupils explore ways in which Hindus worship. Geography Contrasting Locality: Children look at another locality through aspects of life that will be familiar to them. They compare this locality to their own locality. Art Objects and meaning: sketching natural and manmade objects, insight into the artist Georgia OKeefe. PE Athletics and Tennis: Using different styles and combinations of running, jumping and throwing. Pupils plan strategies and tactics for games. Personal, Social, and Health Education Going for goals. Relationships. Enabling Enterprise: Working in teams, pupils turn ideas into plans, and work on giving presentations and communicating effectively.

Behaviour Good behaviour and work is rewarded through the House System, which is in place for the whole school. Unacceptable behaviour will not be tolerated at any time. This will be recorded on a referral slip. If your child receives three of these, you will be asked to come to school to discuss the isue. Reading/Library Books Reading books are changed weekly, or as often as required. Your child should be reading at home for 10-20 minutes every evening. Please write comments in the Reading Record books concerning your childs reading. Ensure all books are kept in the book bag and that they are returned to school daily. All library books must be returned on time and we would like to remind you that damaged books will incur a fine. This is usually the full cost of the book. Homework Children will be given homework every Friday. The homework should be returned by Wednesday of the following week. It would be beneficial if you encourage your child to complete and hand in their homework on a regular basis. Overnight homework is occasionally set and must be returned the following day. Year 5 are currently running a Film Club on Thursdays after school for children in Key Stage 2. There are also booster lessons on Tuesdays to support your child in numeracy and writing.
