Thank You for Your Service!

We are proud to have the committed support of over 70 volunteers who serve on a variety of Boards and Commissions. Volunteers assist us in offering programs and services to our community. The Village Board recently had the opportunity to thank all of these dedicated volunteers. Volunteering on a Board or Commission makes government run more efficiently and effectively. It helps decision-makers maintain the interest of our community as a whole. Volunteers assist with the proper delivery of services and programs, such as blood drives, natural resource protection, and community celebrations. They ensure that our residents concerns are heard during development reviews. The dedication of our volunteers is truly amazing. They are always willing to help and get involved. We greatly appreciate their commitment to our community. This year the Village recognized Alan Burnham, Norbert Esch, Kevin King, Pete Schwartz and Ernie Wollter who have selflessly volunteered for 25 years. Thank you for your continued dedication! We welcome and encourage you to get involved! Volunteer applications are available on-line at www.streamwood.org, or at Village Hall. Join us, and your neighbors, as we work to maintain the high quality of life we all enjoy in the Village of Streamwood! For detailed information on the Commissions, visit our website at www.streamwood.org.

Shop Streamwood!
According to research, when consumers shop locally, $73 of every $100 spent stays in the community. By contrast, only $43 of every $100 spent at a non-local business is returned to the community. Local businesses tend to shop locally, too. They use the goods and services of local businesses, keeping revenue in our community and strengthening our business sector. Visit www.streamwood.org and click on our Shop Streamwood! logo for a complete directory of local businesses. Make your tax dollars work for you!

Spotlight on Manufacturing
The Community and Economic Development Commission (CEDC) will be hosting a Manufacturing Summit on May 1 to help bridge the gap between available manufacturing jobs, and needed employee skills. Manufacturing is on the rise. Getting key positions filled is a struggle for many companies because of an aging workforce and disinterest in manufacturing careers and skills. Trelleborg Sealing Solutions Streamwood (TSS-Streamwood) is one company facing this challenge. TSS-Streamwood fabricates unique components for hydraulic and structural applications. They addressed the skilled labor shortage by creating their own CNC Apprenticeship program. TSS Human Resources Manager Ricardo Acevedo said, It was better to build our own workforce instead of relying on the market. TSS-Streamwood invested more than 2,200 hours in training last year. Mr. Acevedo noted that prior to getting involved with their program, many of these young workers didnt even think about manufacturing as a career. They didnt realize that the new manufacturing jobs require key skills and sophisticated technology, and with that comes improved pay. The CEDC is hoping to help businesses such as TSS-Streamwood work with Elgin Community College and School District U-46 to educate workers about the opportunities in manufacturing, and provide good-paying jobs in our region.

Maybe a new hybrid vehicle isnt in your future. It doesnt mean you cant save money, and help protect the environment, with your current car. The Natural Resource Conservancy Commission offers these tips, which can help to save on fuel costs. With the price of gas today, these simple tips can help you drive green, while saving some green! Slow it down! For every 5 mph you reduce highway speed, you can reduce fuel consumption by 7%. Cost Savings? 19 cents a gallon by reducing speed from 60 mph to 55 mph. Smooth it out! Driving at a constant rate improves your gas mileage. Potential gas savings? 33% on the highway and 5% around town, or an average 48 cents a gallon. Straighten and pump it up! Poor tire alignment and low tire pressure forces your car to work harder, reducing fuel economy by 13%. Increase the pressure for another 36 cents a gallon savings. Clean it up! Did you know a clean air filter can improve gas mileage by as much as 10%? This can save you 28 cents a gallon. Give your brake a rest! Riding with your foot on the brake wears out brakes and increases gas consumption by as much as 35%. Lighten up and save a whopping 96 cents a gallon.
