On.the third_ night of our tronsil we received o messoge from the Commodore dispotching our ship to the oid of o Greek merchont ship who hod o bodly iniured mon oboord. We found th- SS Argo Ollondio in mid-Atlontic ond brought her mon oboord the Weeks. We then proceeded lo the very beoutiful isle of Son Miguel. The people were friendly, sidewolks of mosoic tile, immoculote counlryside, ond lush green lond. We stoyed overnighl ond it wos o welcomed breok from o long rough
crossi ng.
As the result of storm domoge from the crossing we steomed through Gibroltor lo Aronci Boy where we underwenl repoirs. There wos little doing here os it wos o non-liberty port. Christmos shopping wos done oboord the lender ond in our ship's store. A porty wos given for school children in the town of Aronci ond over 200 children received dolls, toy cors, condy, fruit, sow cortoon movies ond song Christmos corols wiih men of the U.S. Novy ond Morines. On to the lond of Greece.
ATHENS, GREECE
A Merry Christmos to .olll Our stoy in Aihens wos brief, but os we were the only U.S. ship in port we received o fine welcome ond on excellent porking ploce. Mony crew men hod'the oppoitunily to enioy Christmos dinner with Americon fomilies stotioned in ond oround Athens or with Greek fomilies. The Greeks celebroted the doy in neorly the ssme monner os we do.
Comfortobly eorly on Christmos morn we ossembled on the fontoil for o surprise. Hundreds of gifts sent from you, our loved ones, ond oddressed to Ensign Rudolph Reindeer, were opened to the-delight of oll the crew_oswell os the mony Greeks who lined the neorby fence. Your thoughtfulness gove us oll o very worm feeling on lhot doy spent so for from home.

PORTS
THE CANAL, PORT SAID & PORT SUEZ llloppy New- Yeorl Cheers with o cup of chicken soup os we wotched the northbound convoy celebrote the birth o{ 1964 in our occustomed style. Oh well, it wos over quickly. The ship heoded the southbound convoy out of the smoll city of Port Soid. The Weeks wos the first ship through the conol in 1964. The trip throu-gh the conol wo.s very_interesting. Sond ond borren desert on one iide ond green oosis ond plonted fields on the other. After l7 miles we reoched the city of Port Suez. The shipping in ond oboui the conol wos tremendous. The entire operotion wos efficiently run by the Egyptions'who reop vost benef its f rom this 1869 engineering feot. JEDDAH, SAUDIA ARABIA The shifting sonds of the desert ond our introduction to the Arob world took ploce in this moior city of Arobio. Across the pier wos on old ship looded with hundreds of comels (one hump) ond goots fiom Ethiopio. All of Arobio is without liquor ond beer so our entertoinment wos oll in ihe oth-letic field. Itwos on-interesting ploce. Strolling through the morket ploce wos the only sightseeing we did. A lorge group of the crew wos invited to the home of Sheik Ali Rozo for o sumptuous feost. Our soccer teom ployed its first gome here ogoinst o leom mode up of Arobion porotroopers. We lost the motch but enioyed il os much os the hundreds of Arobs who lined the field to wotch.
Berbero wos the top of irs closs the settlement untit we sot very """t[B:[i'rt"?iti!l:ffyr?tlti, sed close to shore ond o few houses were sighted. As lhis wos our firsl time in Africo we oll *dre u"ry curious os to whot we would find. We found o smoll villoge, Russions surveying lhe horbor, modern gos stolions, o few trucks, ond o soccer teom thot toyed with us to ihe delight of the crowd of Africons present. The weother wos beoutiful ond we spent o good deol of time on the fine beoches neor the town. We left thot f ine spot ond heoded due north for Aden. ADEN, ADEN PROTECTORATE Aden wos o shopper's porodise. Here we hod o chonce to bicker with the locol shop keepers to the best of our obility. Those who didn't know how, leorned quickly. Rodios, tope recorders, comeros, ond binoculors were omong the best buys os Aden wos o duty free port. The British were wonderful hosts. We ployed boskelboll, soccer, boseboll, ond even leorned o little cricket. The beoches were nice ond the best borgoin wos o gin ond tonic for I04. One evening the executive officer brought oboord the Sixth Regiolol Royol Air Force Bond ond \{e were treoted to o imoshing bond concert on the fontoil. It wos o first-for the RAF ond for the USN. DJIBOUTI, FRENCH SOMA[ILAND Bock to Africo ogoin ond this time we were greeted by the French. The French soilors homeported there hod our sympothy os lhe oreo wos yery dry ond hot. There were o few ploces to go ot nighi, ond ii wos noto very lively stop. Our doys in Diibouti were spent getting the ship pointed out for our trip lo Mossowo' Eihiopio' MA''AWA, ETHI.'TA The re-oson \Me wer-e -s-ent to Mossqwo wos to be the officiol representotive of the United Stotes ot the ceremonies for the Ethiopion Novol Doy. As we steomed into the horbor preporotions were in full swing for the orrivol of his lmperiol r[o'iesty, Hoile Solossie, Emperor of Ethiopio. The French ond lndions olso hod senf o ship to represent their notions. Mony porodes followed ond thousonds of notives lined ihe streets to see their leoder. One doy 2,500 men from ouilying oreos orrived on comelsto poy tribute to the emperor. Our drill ieom morched very well ot the groduotion ceremonies ond oll hod on opportunity to see Solossie, the longest reigning monorch in the world, 40 yeors os emperor. Some of us hod the chonce to trovel 60 miles inlond to the city of Asmoro up in the mountoins. We were quite surprised to find such o modern ploce. The city wos founded ond built by the ltolions ond wos like being in ltoly. KARACHI, PAKISTAN It wos rumored thot there might be o demonstrotion upon our orrivol in Korochi, but we found the city no less friendly thon the olhers. Although there ore not o greot number of tourists in thot city, enterloinment wos obundonl. We sow o greotdeolof the city riding oboui in horse corrioges ond on molor scooters. Now we con better understond the problems of ihot country ofler seeing the poverty. Shopping wos good for such things os bross, silks ond wooden obiects. We were entertoined one ofternoon by o mongoose ond cobro duel on the fontoil. We olso ployed soccer ond bosketboll with the Pokistonese novol codets.
MOMBASA, KENYA Due to lhe situotion in Zonzibor our schedule wos chonged ond we heoded south rother thon spend time in the Persion Gulf. We crossed the equolor ol 43 44.00 Eost on o beoutiful doy ond ,nJ"iu"nt the honoroble initioiion, ond th,e chonge.from Pollyyog to SJrellbock. King N"pirn" *o, in oll his ,pl"ndor ond his court did their iobs well. We orrived irithe Porr of Momb"oso d"i Uil"f bri;"il en;oyoble stoy. Th.e city wos c.leon, neot, modern, ond offered good rest onJ i"io*Lrion. " There ,uo. o noticeoble lock of beggors ond lhe people were very friendly. Mony men went on sofori, not o oun but yith o comero., ond sow ih.e sights of the'reol Africo. The Tsovo Gome Pork wos or "nitt-' rt"," fooi of fr4t. Kilimonio.ro ond we sow elephonts-, lions, impol.o,.oll. the gome of Africo. We ployed U,"rt"tU"li ond o little..rugby w.ith the British. I think thot we oll feel if it'wos not for the gritish ih" t,,iddl" Eost-oreo would be in o bod position todoy. Next stop wos the Suez Conol ond bock to the Med.
