Question 1: Consider the boundary layer developing when an incompressible fluid flows over a flat plate. The velocity profiles within the boundary layer are often approximated by the following relations: [CHANGE U to Vo to match with nomenclature in figure]
a.
u y = U

b.

u y = sin U 2

c.

u y y =2 U

Here (x) is the boundary layer thickness at a given position x and y is the vertical coordinate. Vo is the x direction velocity at infinity. Plot the velocity profiles. For each of these profiles calculate the mass crossing AD in the figure.the boundary layer developing when an incompressible fluid flows over a flat plate. The velocity profile within the boundary layer at any section x is given by . For this problem, and . is the boundary layer thickness at that location. With reference to the figure given below:

Question 2: Two pipelines (A and B) in series connect two headers. Pipeline A has length 10 meters and 100mm inner diameter while Pipeline B has a length of 5 meters and 25 mm inner diameter. Another pipeline C (length of 15 meters and inner diameter 50 mm) meter also connects the same two headers. An incompressible, viscous fluid flows from one header to the other through both routes.
a. Draw a sketch of the pipelines and headers. b. Given that all flows are laminar, if the flow in Pipeline A is QA = 160 litres per minute, estimate the flow in Pipeline B and C.

c. For the above flow, estimate the pressure drop in pipeline A and pipeline C if the pressure drop in pipeline B is 100 Pa. [10 marks]

Question 3: Consider a (frictionless) piston-cylinder system. Initially, one mole of an ideal gas is present in the cylinder. The pressure and temperature of the gas are 1 bar and 300 K. A stirrer slowly (quasi-statically) stirs the gas with a torque of 200 N-m and the gas is allowed to expand at constant pressure. The stirrer performs 20 full rotations when the process ends. The final temperature of the gas is 400 K. (Cv of the gas is 2.5R J/(mol-K), where R is the universal gas constant=8.314 J/(mol-K)). (a) What is the heat transfer to the gas in Joules? (b) What is the final volume of the gas in cubic meters? (c) If the cylinder-piston arrangement is insulated such that the constant pressure expansion occurs adiabatically, what is the final volume and temperature of the gas if the stirrer component remains the same? Show all work for full credit.

Question 4: Moist air exists at a total pressure of 10 bar and at a dry bulb temperature of 100C. Specific humidity (ratio of mass of water vapour to mass of dry air) for this air is 0.00185. Determine the dew point temperature and relative humidity (given that molecular weight of water is 18 and that for air is 29) If this air, at 100oC and 10 bar, is adiabatically expanded to a pressure of 1 bar determine the water that will condense out from the air stream. Determine the moisture that will condense out if this expanded air is further cooled to 12oC while maintaining the pressure at 1 bar.

d. Question 5: Consider a chamber formed by two circular plates separated by a distance L (see figure). The cylindrical side wall is insulated so that there is no heat transfer to the ambient. Inside the chamber air at 1 atmosphere and 300 K is initially present. The upper plate is kept at a temperature T , whereas the lower plate is kept at a temperature T . Draw the temperature u d profile in between the plates if (a) T < T and, (b) T < T Justify your profiles. u d d u .

Question 6: Consider an inverted conical piece exposed to the atmosphere such that the half cone angle is 30 degrees. The length of the slanted sides is 2 meters. What is the view factor of the inner surface of the cone to the surroundings. Consider the lower half of the cone (i.e., 1 meter along the slanted height from the tip of the cone). What is the view factor of this half to the upper half?

Question 7: A non-linear equation is given as

dy/dx + p(x)y = q(x)yn. where n is a constant (not necessarily an integer)

Eq (1)

The above equation can be converted to a linear equation by changing the dependent variable from y(x) to u(x) according to u(x) = y1-n (for n not equal to 0 or 1). The transformed equation can be expressed as du/dx + A(x)u = B(x).

(a) Under what conditions is Eq(1) non-linear? (b) Determine A x and B x in the transformed equation. [10 marks]
