The Loving Story is a collection of photographs taken by the late LIFE magazine photographer, Grey Villet, and displayed around the country. The Loving Story depicts the plight of the Lovings who were married in Washington, D.C. in 1958 and returned to their home in Virginia. Richard is white, and his new wife, Mildred, is black. Their marriage took place in a time when interracial marriages were illegal in Virginia. Upon returning to their home, the couple was arrested and agreed to leave Virginia to avoid a jail sentence. The courageous couple fought this injustice all the way to the Supreme Court where a landmark decision in 1967 legalized interracial marriage. Gray Villets haunting photographs brilliantly document the determination and strength of the couple. Greys wife, Barbara, is a Shushan resident, and approached the CCC last fall about exhibiting the photographs. During the opening reception, the CCC has secured the rights for a showing of the documentary of the same name, The Loving Story. The film by Nancy Buirski was a contender for an Oscar and has been shown on HBO. This important exhibit will be on display until June 20, and the public is invited to visit the CCC located at 58 East Broadway in Salem. For additional information, please call 518-854-7053. CELEBRATE THE KENTUCKY DERBY- The Salem Courthouse Community Center is offering a wonderful event to celebrate one of the favorite rituals of spring. On Saturday, May 3, there will be a Kentucky Derby party at the lovely home of Cindy Spence in Saratoga Springs from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. Ms. Spences home provides ample parking and is located on Nelson Avenue across from the track. The gracious home is the perfect setting for this event which will feature a delicious buffet, a cash wine bar, fun betting to benefit the CCC (with 1 token prize in each category: win, place and show ), a raffle for a basket of assorted wines and the opportunity to view the Kentucky Derby on one of 2 wide-screen televisions in a gorgeous setting. Guests are encouraged to wear their favorite Kentucky Derby attire and extravagant hats as well. This event is sure to be a marvelous experience sharing the excitement of the 140th Run for the Roses. The proceeds from this enjoyable event will support the many worthy initiatives offered by the CCC. Tickets are $40 each and may be reserved by calling the CCC at 518-854-7053. MOM PROM- Lake George Mom Prom will be held Saturday May 3rd 2014 at The Towers of Fort William Henry. Mom Prom was created in 2006 in Canton, MI by Betsy Crapps. It is a ladies night out for charity in which women wear their old prom gowns, bridesmaids dresses, or wedding gowns. It is a real prom with a DJ, contests, raffles and a game to crown the new queen. This is a wonderful, hilarious night in which women can dance the night away, have fun with friends, and help a worthy cause. All of our lives have been touched in some way by cancer, so it was not difficult to decide our charities, Cindy's Comfort Camp for Kids and Uniquely You Boutique and Salon. These organizations provide support and assistance to cancer patients and their families to help them manage the difficulties they may face as they fight against cancer. Mom prom tickets are available for $45.00 per person at www.lakegeorgemomprom.com . Tickets must be purchased in advance. Our Entertainment for the evening will be provided by Mark Brenneisen of Total Entertainment and Mike Reilly of CT Productions. www.terocks.com & www.ctpdj.com Saratoga Photobooth has donated a photobooth for the evening to add to the festivities, sponsored proudly by Cerrone Builders Other Sponsors include: A-1 Treeworks, Davies~Davies & Associates Real Estate, The Home Improvement Gallery Many fabulous items have been donated by local businesses for raffles available the night of the event. For more information contact Gretchen Lovering at (518) 792-6217 or visit the Lake George Mom Prom Web-site at: www.lakegeorgemomprom.com

ON THE FARM

by Andy Manne

Delayed planting reduces yield potential, so focus on getting your crop established quickly. By Peter Thomison and Steve Culman, The Ohio State University. As of April 20, only 6% of the U.S. corn crop had been planted. Weather forecasts call for some cooler-than-average temperatures and relatively near-normal rain this week, and the forecast for early May in many areas is calling for lower temperatures than normal. As prospects for a timely start to spring planting diminish, growers need to reassess their planting strategies and consider adjustments. Since delayed planting reduces the yield potential of corn, the foremost attention should be given to management practices that will expedite crop establishment. The following are some This weeks ag report is suggestions and guidelines to consider in sponsored by: dealing with a late planting season. Although the penalty for late planting is important, avoiding tillage and planting operations when soil is wet should be a higher priority. Yield reductions resulting from "mudding the seed in" are usually much greater than those resulting from a slight planting delay. Yields may be reduced somewhat this year due to delayed planting, but effects of soil compaction can reduce yield for years to come. (Keep in mind that we typically dont see significant yield reductions due to late planting until mid-May or even later in some years.) If you originally planned to apply nitrogen pre-plant, consider alternatives so that planting is not further delayed when favorable planting conditions occur. Although application of anhydrous N is usually recommended prior to April 15 in order to minimize potential injury to emerging corn, anhydrous N may be applied as close as a week before planting (unless hot, dry weather is predicted). In late planting seasons associated with wet, cool soil conditions, growers should consider side-dressing anhydrous N (or UAN liquid solutions) and applying a minimum of 30 lb/N broadcast or banded to stimulate early seedling growth. This latter approach will allow greater time for planting. Similarly, application of P and K is only necessary with the starter if a soil test reveals the soil is below the critical level. Keep time expended on tillage passes and other preparatory operations to a minimum. The above work will provide minimal benefits if it results in further planting delays. No-till offers the best option for planting on time this year. Field seedbed preparation should be limited to leveling ruts that may have been left by the previous years harvest; disk or field cultivate very lightly to level. Most newer planters provide relatively good seed placement in "trashy" or crusted seedbeds. Don't worry about switching hybrid maturities unless planting is delayed to late May. If planting is possible before May 20, plant full season hybrids first to allow them to exploit the growing season more fully. Research in Ohio and other Corn Belt states generally indicates that late plantings of earlier maturity hybrids are less susceptible to yield losses than late plantings of the later maturing, full season hybrids. In delayed planting situations, use the optimal seeding rates for the yield potential of each field. Recommended seeding rates for early planting dates are often 10% higher than the desired harvest population because of the potential for greater seedling mortality. However, soil temperatures are usually warmer in late planted fields, and as a result germination and emergence should be more rapid and uniform. So, as planting is delayed, seeding rates may be lowered (decreased to 3 to 5% higher than the desired harvest population) in anticipation of a higher percentage of seedlings emerging. Lets just hope weather conditions do not worsen!

ADIRONDACK VOICES TO PRESENT SPRING CONCERT- The Adirondack Voices will hold their annual spring concert on Tuesday, May 6, at 7:30 p.m., at Christ Church United Methodist, 54 Bay Street. Under the direction of Penny Schiek, the chorus consists of approximately 70 voices. The theme of this years concert is music of American poets, and it will include a variety pieces from a George Gershwin medley to musical settings of two Robert Frost poems, a Pete Seeger selection, and Howard Hansons Song of Democracy, among others. Piano accompaniment will be provided by Carol-Ann Elze-Sussdorf. Ms. Schiek is the vocal music director at Queensbury High School where she directs the Mixed Chorus, Concert Choir, and Madrigal Singers. She also serves as a voice adjudicator for the NYS Music Teachers Association and is the director of handbells at Christ Church United Methodist. Ms. Elze-Sussdorf is a collaborative pianist at Skidmore college, music director for the Glens Falls Symphony Childrens Chorus, organist and choir director of the United Methodist Church of Queensbury and the founding director of the St. Marys/St. Alphonsus Glee Club. Admission for the performance will be $10.00 per person. Tickets will be available at the door. This event is made possible, in part, with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Program, administered locally by the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council. For further information, call 796-4648. THE JURY ROOM- The Highlight Acting Troupe will present The Jury Room by C.B. Gilford on Friday and Saturday, May 2, 3, 9, 10, at 8 pm and Sunday, May 4, 11 at 2 pm at the Brunswick Grange, Rt. 7 and Rt. 142. The show is directed by Ken Ryer assisted by Christine LeVan. Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors and students. Twelve jurors gather to decide the innocence or guilt of a young girl. Did she stab her uncle in cold blood? Eleven jurors say Yes - one, a student actress, says No. The jurors agree to her request to re-enact the crime right there. Props are brought in - including the actual murder weapon. The actress becomes the accused. The foreman takes the part of the murdered man, and as the re-enactment proceeds, some people begin to lose themselves in their parts. It's a tense situation, for if the girl did not kill her uncle - who did? Could it even be one of the characters on stage? The verdict, the solution, and the climax of the play arrive together in a single, smashing conclusion! For reservations call Ethel at 518-237-6936

The Chapman Historical Museums new exhibit, At the Lake, which opens May 2 and runs through August 31, presents different perspectives on what it has meant to be at Lake George over the past 150 years. Included in the exhibit are the stories of groups that camped on the lakes many islands, families that built grand homes on the lake, and others who constructed more modest camps. To diversify the story the exhibit also includes the experiences of people who lived on the lake and worked there each summer as waitresses, cooks, laundry workers, guides and boatmen. At the Lake is funded by grants from The Leo Cox Beach Philanthropic Foundation and the Waldo T. Ross & Ruth S. Ross Charitable Trust Foundation, and sponsored by The Lake George Mirror, Glen Street Associates and Glens Falls National Bank and Trust Company. I LOVE NY MARKETING WILDLIFE VIEWING PLANNING WORKSHOP hosted by Friends of the IBA and Washington County. Participation is limited; please let us know if you would like to be invited to the workshop and why you are interested in attending. We are seeking enthusiastic, energetic people willing to contribute to a collaborative effort to promote Wildlife Viewing in our region. DATE: Thursday, May 29 TIME: 8:00 am - 4 pm @ Rogers Island Visitors Center, Fort Edward. Friends of Washington County Grasslands IBA (Important Bird Area) and Washington County have been selected as one of two locations in New York State to host an I Love New York Wildlife Viewing Planning Workshop, presented in collaboration with Watchable Wildlife, Inc. Wildlife viewing is now the number one outdoor activity in the U.S., surpassing even fishing and hunting! It contributes more than $54.9 billion to the U.S. economy, bringing millions of dollars in sales, tax revenues and jobs to local communities. James Mallman, President and founding Board member of Watchable Wildlife has been conducting Nature/Wildlife Tourism Workshops for the past eight years. He is currently working on programs in Russia, China, Canada, Mexico and the U.S. "The idea of this workshop is to take facilities and businesses that are already functioning and start to grow tourism at a time when it is sitting idle," says Mallman. The workshop enables community leaders and business owners to better understand the economic potential for wildlife viewing in their region. "The purpose is to help people understand wildlife and why they should be protecting it." The workshop ends with a Site Assessment Field Trip to the Washington County Grasslands. Friends of the IBA organizes and holds the annual Winter Raptor Fest in Fort Edward, an event that draws 1,500 - 2,000 visitors to the area. Local businesses report up to a 60% increase in sales compared to a typical weekend in March. The event helps fund the grassroots non-profits work to raise awareness of and conserve state endangered Short-eared owls and other threatened birds of the Washington County Grasslands and their habitat.
