External Genitals
Vulva
The Mons Veneris
Area covering the pubic bone consists of fatty tissue. It is sensitive to touch and can be sexually pleasurable because of the numerous nerve endings. During puberty, hair grows and covers the mons veneris.

The Labia Majora


The outer lips that extend downward on each side of the vulva.

External Genitals
The Labia Minora The inner lips that lay within the outer lips. They are hairless and they join the prepuce or the clitoral hood. Contain sweat, and oil glands. Also Excessive blood vessels and nerve endings

External Genitals
Clitoris/Clitoral Hood
A highly sensitive structure of the female external genitals and the only function is for sexual pleasure. Contains as many nerve endings as the head of the penis. Which is covered by a foreskin called the prepuce or Clitoral hood.

The Vestibule
Area inside the labia minora. Rich in blood vessels and nerve endings. Both urinary and the vaginal openings are located within the vestibule.

The Urethral Opening


A tube that connects to the bladder, which passes urine.

The Introitus and The Hymen
The opening of the vagina between urinary opening and the anus. When born a fold of tissue called the Hymen covers the introitus, usually remains intact until initial intercourse.

The Perineum
A smooth skin between the introitus and the anus. It is usually torn from childbirth; it is very thin and smooth.

Internal Genitals
Vagina
A stretchable canal that extends into the body. Extends about 3-5 inches into the pelvis. Contains three layers of tissue; mucosa-musclefibrous tissue.

Cervix
Located at the back of the vagina, a small end of the pear-shaped uterus. Contains mucussecreting glands.

The Uterus
A hollow, thick pear-shaped organ that is about three inches long and 2 inches wide. It suspended in the pelvic cavity by ligaments it consists of three layers
Perimetrium- External thin membrane Myometrium- The smooth muscle layer of the uritine wall that interweaves. Endometrium- The inner lining of the uterus. Rich in blood vessels that nourishes the zygote.

The Fallopian Tubes
Two 4-inch tubes extends from the uterus towards an ovary on both the left or right side on the pelvic cavity. It contains fimbriae at the end of the tube that helps and egg from the ovary into the tube.

The Ovaries
Two almond shaped ovaries that are at the ends of the fallopian tubes. They are also connected by ligaments. The ovaries contain about 1 million immature ova at birth and between 400,00 and 500,000 at menarche.

The opening at the end of the digestive tract where feces leaves the body.

Anus

A sac where the Urine is held and produced by the kidneys

Bladder

Tubes connecting the ovaries to the uterus through which the ovum travels after ovulation.

Fallopian Tubes

A membrane that covers that vagina that each women is born with

Hymen

The smooth skin between the introitus and anus

Perineum

Menstruation
Menarche: is the initial bleeding for a young girl. It usually happens between 11 and 15. Menstruation Cycle: The uterine lining is prepared for a fertilized ovum. If this doesnt happen the lining will discharge into the menstrual flow. It takes 2-7 days to shed the lining, which is called your period.

Menstruation Problems
Amenorrhea: The absence of menstruation. There are two types of amenorrhea. Primary and secondary amenorrhea. Primary amenorrhea is failure to begin to menstruate at puberty. Secondary amenorrhea is a disruption of the menstrual cycle. It is normal during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Its common in people starting their menstruation cycle or approaching menopause. Its common in athletes because of an estrogen reduction. Others are weight loss, and eating disorders.

Mensuration Problems
Menstrual Synchrony- When women live together or spend a lot of time together, their cycles usually sync together. Toxic Shock Syndrome-A disease caused by toxins produced by the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. All the symptoms happen rapidly and can cause death. A reason to cause TSS is leaving tampons in their body for a long period of time.
