Two-Point Perspective Castles

Grade: 9-12 Curriculum Area: Visual Art Unit of Study/Art history/Cultural context: Perspective; Element of Texture; Medieval Architecture SPI's/Standards of Art: TN: 1.1.1-1.1.4, 1.3.1-.1.3.4, 1.4.1-1.4.4, 2.1.1-2.1.4, 4.1.1, 4.3.1, 5.1.1, 6.2.1

Objectives: The student will reinforce their comprehension of perspective by continuing to 2-Point Perspective drawing. (1.1.3) The student will define terms relating to perspective. (2.1) The student will construct an accurate drawing of a Medievalstyle castle using 2-point perspective and apply texture. (2.1.4) The student will add value to their drawings using color. (1.1.1) The student will compare and contrast castles to modern architecture, and understand the importance of the elements of defense to incorporate into their designs. (2.3, 4.1.1)

Materials: Copy paper (exercise) 18x24 Paper (project) Pencils Erasers Rulers/Protractors Colored Pencils

Assessment Strategies: Questions and responses during presentation to show understanding. For example: show photos of castles in either 1-point or 2-point perspective, and students must determine which one. Individual monitoring during guided and independent practice (double-check comprehension). Rubric for the final project: scoring based on how well Objectives were met in the project. (All lines follow 2-point perspective; drawn texture on the castle; included elements of castle architecture such as battlements, towers, etc.; landscape/environment chosen; and show value with color pencils.) At the end of the semester, the final exam will include questions about Perspective.

Guided Learning Steps: PowerPoint Presentation Allows students to interpret and analyze the type of perspective. Questions will demonstrate comprehension, using examples to compare and contrast architecture and perspective used, as well as check for understanding of terms and technique. Demonstration/Guided Practice Starting with the basics of drawing several boxes using 2-point perspective. Each step will be checked for accuracy. Builds in complexity by adding more (stacking on top), followed by two worksheets to practice drawing dice and a barn. Individual Practice (Project) [3 days] Draw a castle using 2-point perspective. Include castle features, assign a texture to it (stone? rock? straw?), and a background. They will color in their final drawings, showing value as utilized in previous lessons to create a realistic representation of the castle, its texture, and its surroundings. Reflection Students will show their work to class and explain their creative choices.
