Guided Learning Steps: PowerPoint Introduction Students learn about the Art Nouveau period and its characteristics. Artists like Mucha and Klimt are discussed, and examples of artwork are shown. Students compare and contrast these works along with characteristics of mosaics. Concepts of collage and mixed media are discussed and the project guidelines. Examples of project are shown for visual aid. Demonstration/Guided Practice Students will receive a handout on Klimt and his famous Tree of Life design. Students will draw their own version of the tree, including the curved branches and numerous patterns. They must fill the tree up with these lines, shapes and color, along with small cut pieces of construction paper. This prepares them for the collage technique. Individual Practice (Project) [3-4 days] Students will research imagery throughout magazines and choose pictures that relate to their interests, as well as at least one figure. They must apply the different techniques of gluing types of paper down, drawing out designs and patterns with multiple items such as markers and white charcoal. The designs and pictures must be cohesive and connected. Students will also add gold foil to emulate Klimts style of adding gold and silver to his work. Pieces can be cut out and drawn into for extra emphasis. Other items may be used per teacher permission, such as paint. Reflection Students will discuss their choices and how the images relate to them.
