IET 123 Project #2

Purpose/ Background of the Activity
The purpose of this project is to design a cost effective, and long lasting water filtration system.
It is necessary to involve so many people at such a large scale of distance so that collaboration
and industrialization for the implementation of this product to take effect on the desired
audience.
The Society
For this part, I may be a bit unorthodox, but I feel like the widespread geography and sporadic boarders
of this part of Asia may benefit more than one country, rather than just one. The countries I will be
reaching out to are Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Their need that I am trying to fix, is clean
water.
-Malaysia
Geography
The geography of Malaysia is very rocky, but also very luscious with fertile soil. Located close to the
equator, naturally it is very temperate and hot.
Living Conditions
The cost of living in Malaysia is poor for the most part. Their Consumer Price Index is 49.54, as opposed
to Americas 703.
Life Expectancy
The life expectancy in Malaysia is 74.26 years.
Housing
To buy an apartment in city centre per square meter is $1984.78 and out of city centre is $1219.25 in
Malaysia
Children per Household
There are approximately 2.64 children per household in Malaysia.
Hospitals
There are approximately 1.8 hospital beds per 1000 people
Water Conditions
Water seems to be potable for the most part, able to cook with, bathe with, and drink. Could be better,
however. Not everyone in Malaysia has this luxury.

-Philippines
Geography
The Philippines occupies an area that stretches for 1,850 kilometers (1,150 mi) from about the fifth to
the twentieth parallels north latitude. The total land area is slightly more than 300,000 square
kilometers (115,831 sq mi). Only approximately 1,000 of its islands are populated, and fewer than one-
half of these are larger than 2.5 square kilometers (1 sq mi). It is very mountainous and teperate.
Cost of Living
The CPI in the Philippines is 41.49 as opposed to the US's 703. To buy an appartment close to city is
about $1557.24 and away from the city is about $973.
Life Expectancy
The life expectancy in the Philippines is about 68.76 years
Housing
There are approximatelly 3.1 children per household. There are many makeshift and bamboo houses
Hospital Density
There is 1 hospital bed per 1000 people in the Philippines.
Water Conditions
Especially in urban areas, water quality does not meet the standards set by the national government. As
a result, waterborne diseases remain a severe public health concern in the country. About 4,200 people
die each year due to contaminated drinking water.

-Indonesia

Geography
Indonesia has over 17,000 islands, many of which are uninhabited. The country is scattered over the
equator equipped with volcanos and rainforests. The hot and humid climate create the perfect
conditions for tropical foods, and the monsoonal winds create two seasons- wet from November to April
and dry from May to October.

Living Conditions
Much of Indonesia is rural. Rice fields blanket huge portions of fertile Indonesia on the flat land and
terraced hillsides. Timber houses with tile roofs are common as well as communal longhouses and
houses on stilts. Many Indonesian villages are without electricity and, typically, these villages are the
victims of season flooding. Rice is the most common crop and the lively hood of many citizens.
Unfortunately, too many families can't afford nutritious food like fish, meat, and vegetables and fill food
like cassava and rice that lack important nutrients. The consumer price index is around 49.06 as opposed
to America's 703. Serious diseases like malaria and tuberculosis are still persistent. Many families don't
have access to a safe water supply and barely half of these families have access to adequate sanitation.

Life Expectancy
Life expectancy of Indonesia is 69.5 years.

Housing
The floors of houses in Indonesia are typically pounded earth, concrete, or raised wood. Wood frames
support walls made of woven bamboo. Roofs are dried palm fibre, tiles, or wood. Urban areas may have
concrete or tile flooring. These houses are framed with teak or meranti wood. Brick and plaster make up
urban walls and tiles and shingles are used for roofing.

Children Per Household
Average number of children is 2 per household.

Hospital
There are approximately 1,400 hospitals in Indonesia.

Water Conditions

Water is characterized as being poor in service and sanitation levels.

The Product
The product will be a straw. This straw, in detail, will be a plastic tube 310 mm long and 30 mm in
diameter, filled with a charcoal bamboo filter, compressed to only allow molecules of 20 microns and
smaller through it, virtually eliminating 99.99% of all viruses and bacteria, as well as solid wastes in the
water. After it is used, you may blow on the end of it to dispel impurities and clean out the filter. The
product is simply made of plastic, and plants. With it requiring only a mechanical stimulus of the user,
this is very sustainable and affordable.
Picture of Product
Although a picture from the internet is inadvisable, there exists such a product that fits exactly my
dimensions and design. In fact, you could call my product, an improvement on this product because of
the cheaper, yet still reusable filter.

Here is a picture of what I want the product to look like, almost exactly, but without the label.

Part 2: Manufacturing Company

Company Name:
Panda Straws Inc.

What Do You Manufacture?
We manufacture bamboo charcoal filtration straws.

What Processes Do You Use?
1. Boil bamboo charcoal sticks
2. Once boiling, remove from heat and dry.
3. Once, dry, bamboo is crushed and condensed to not allow molecules above 20 microns to
pass through.
4. Once it has passed its strict 20 micron guideline, the tube is attached to it, creating a seal
around the diameter of the charcoal.
Primary Materials:
1. Bamboo Charcoal
2. Polyurethane

How to Obtain Products:
Plastics are very easy to produce, and bamboo around this part of Asia is very abundant, so all
you would need to do is process it to its charcoal form.

Locations of Factories
The ethnic groups of Indonesia are as follows:
Javanese 41.71%
Sundanese 15.41%
Malay 3.45%
Madurese 3.37%
Batak 3.02%
Minangkabau 2.72%
Betawi 2.51%
Bantenese 2.05%
Banjarese 1.74%
Balinese 1.51%
Makassarese 0.99%
Cirebonede 0.94%

Unemployment Rate: 6.25%

CPI: 49.06

GDP: $878.0 billion 2012

Palangkaraya
I chose Palangkaraya to be the city for our main factory in Asia, and most notably, of the three nations I
have brought forth. I mainly want this to be the epicenter of production in these three areas because it
lies in Central Kalimantan, the center of the largest island in Indonesia. I want to work from the middle
of Indonesia because it would give me a good method of expanding to other parts of Indonesia. I could
not find many prices, so we may have to build from scratch, although what I did see (which again, wasnt
much) went for about $0.90 per square foot. The desired dimension would be 20,000 square feet,
totaling to $18,000, would I be able to find those prices. The main means of obtaining resources would
be quite flexible since shipping in and out is always an option if we cannot find the means to produce.

North Carolina Unemployment Rate: 6.4
North Carolina CPI: around 72
US GDP: 15684.80 BILLION

406-408 Landmark Drive
Wilmington, North Carolina
This is about 40 dollars per square foot, and is selling about 19,725 SF for about $790,000. I particularly
like this area because bamboo grows naturally here, and is directly next to a port, allowing for easier
shipping. There is an abundance of land being sold, and I desperately need that, should I want to harvest
bamboo here, which would more than likely be an inevitable necessity. As with Indonesia, should we run
into an inability to produce, we are next to a port, so importing and exporting would be no problem.
Needless to say, the road system connected to ports, along with the seafaring abilities this gives us, is
our greatest asset to this particular piece of property.
