Coursework Policies

1. All coursework submitted must include

a. a copy of the full brief given by the Module Leader (with the signed coversheet)
b. all source material must be cited in the text and a full bibliography of source
material
(including author, title, publisher and date) listed at the end of the submission
c. a copy of the Originality Report from Turnitin.

2. All work must be submitted in the mode instructed by the Module Leader.

3. Work submitted under the students name must only be the work of that student. All
information sources must be acknowledged. Plagiarism is a serious offence and will
render offenders liable to disciplinary action as set out in the rules and regulation of the
institution.

4. All assignments will need to be submitted to Turnitin as it is a tool to check your work
for potential plagiarism or collusion offences.

5. Students MUST keep a copy of all submitted work for reference purposes prior to the
original being handed in and returned. This will provide proof that the work was
completed, in the event that the work goes astray.

6. Whenever a candidate submits work after approved deadline without an authorised
extension, a mark of zero (0%) will be awarded. Module Leader may comment on the
quality of the work for learning purposes.

7. Requests for extensions of submission deadlines must be made in writing prior to the
submission deadline to the Module Leader and must be supported by documentary
evidence.

ASSIGNMENT BRIEF 1

1. Assignment Title: Statics

2. Learning Outcome(s) covered:
LOC 1: Predict and analyze the fundamental principles of forces, moments, couple and
resultants
LOC 2: Solve problems concerning two and three dimensional loading by using equilibrium
concepts.

3. Programme Learning Outcome(s) and Programme Objective(s) covered:
PO 1: Acquire fundamental knowledge and understanding in Mathematics and
engineering science.
PLO 1: Demonstrate a basic knowledge and understanding of Mathematical principles,
engineering science, and drawing skill.
PLO 3: State and explain electrical and mechanical engineering principles and apply
them to solve basic engineering problems.
PLO 9: Apply critical thinking through independent thought to solve problems
creatively and effectively using basic principles.

4. Scenario/Introduction/Background Information:

A force has been defined as the action of one body to another. A force is a vector quantity
which means that it has both a magnitude (size) and a direction associated with it.

A very basic concept when dealing with forces is the idea of equilibrium or balance. A
system of particles is in static equilibrium when all the particles of the system are at rest and
the total force on each particle is zero. In general, an object can be acted on by several forces
at the same time. If the size and direction of the forces acting on an object are exactly
balanced, then there is no net force acting on the object and the object is said to be in
equilibrium. Because there is no net force acting on an object in equilibrium, then from
Newton's first law of motion, an object at rest will stay at rest, and an object in motion will
stay in motion. When all the forces that act upon an object are balanced, then the object is
said to be in a state of equilibrium.

The forces are considered to be balanced if the rightward forces are balanced by the leftward
forces and the upward forces are balanced by the downward forces. This however does not
necessarily mean that all the forces are equal to each other.

5. Tasks:
Answer and solve the tasks below individually. The capital letter XX and X denote the last
digits of your IC number.

Task 1
It is desired to remove the spike from the timber by applying force along its horizontal axis.
An obstruction A prevents direct access, so that two forces, one 1.XX kN and the other P, are
applied by cables as shown. Compute the magnitude of P necessary to ensure a resultant T
directed along the spike. Obtain the resultant of T. (20 marks)

Figure Task 1 Figure Task 2

Task 2
Calculate the moment of the 9X-N force about point O for the condition =15
o
. Also,
determine the value of for which the moment about O is zero and a maximum.
(15 marks)
Task 3
The 1XX-N force is applied to the end of body OAB. If = 50
o
, determine the equivalent
forcecouple system at the shaft axis O. (20 marks)

Figure Task 3 Figure Task 4

Task 4
Determine the reactions at A and E if P = 5XX N. What is the maximum value which P may
have for static equilibrium? Neglect the weight of the structure compared with the applied
loads. (20 marks)

Task 5
Determine the compression in each of the three legs of the tripod subjected to the vertical 2-
kN force. The weight of the legs is negligible compared with the applied load. Solve by
using the force - equilibrium equation F = 0. (25 marks)
