ASME I Part PMB Requirements for Miniature Boilers

The rules in Part PMB are applicable to miniature boilers and parts thereof and shall be used in
conjunction with the general requirements in Part PG as well as with the special requirements in
the applicable Parts of this Section that apply to the method of fabrication used.
Scope
The classification miniature boilers applies to boilers that do not exceed the following limits

.f a boiler meets the miniature classification, the rules in this Part shall supplement the rules for
power boilers and ta-e precedence o+er them when there is conflict. /here any of the limits in
PMB0'.! are exceeded, the rules for power boilers shall apply.
Materials
1nless specifically permitted elsewhere in this Section, materials used in the construction of
pressure parts for miniature boilers shall conform to one of the specifications in Section .. and
shall be limited to those for which allowable stress +alues are gi+en in Tables !2 and !B of
Section .., Part 3. Miscellaneous pressure parts shall conform to the requirements of PG0!!.
Seamless and welded shells made from pipe for miniature boilers shall be not less than *4!" in.
#$.5 mm& in thic-ness. Shells or heads made from plate shall be not less than !4$ in. #" mm& in
thic-ness. 6eads used as tubesheets, with tubes expanded, shall be at least )4!" in. #5 mm& in
thic-ness.
Steam boiler parts of not o+er "%% cu in. #(.5* m*& in +olume may be cast from copper alloy
complying with requirements of SB0"! or SB0"' of wall thic-ness not less than !4$ in. #" mm&.
Such steam boiler parts shall be equipped with at least one brass washout plug of not less than
!4' in. #!* mm& and shall be tested to a hydrostatic pressure of "%% psi #$ !$% -Pa&.
6eads or parts of miniature boilers, when not exposed to the direct action of the fire, may be
made of cast iron or malleable iron pro+ided it complies with a specification permitted in this
Section.
3ue to the small si7e of parts of miniature boilers, the requirements of .dentification, PG088.!,
need not be met, pro+ided the Manufacturer certifies on the 3ata 9eport accompanying the
boiler that the material is in accordance with the requirements of this Section. Pro+isions shall
be made by the Manufacturer whereby he shall be able to supply complete information
regarding the material and details of construction of any boiler built under the pro+isions of this
:ode.
Design
The rules in the following paragraphs apply specifically to the design of miniature boilers and
parts thereof and shall be used in conjunction with the general requirements for design in Part
PG as well as with the specific requirements for design in the applicable Parts of this Section
that apply to the method of fabrication used.
Welding
Miniature boilers may be constructed by fusion welding in accordance with all the requirements
of this Section except that postweld heat treatment, radiography of the welded joints, and
nondestructi+e examinations described in PG0(*.! are not required.
