Math 1040 Final Project
This project made us apply many of the concepts we learned in Math 1040,
including collecting samples, organizing and analyzing data, drawing conclusions and of course
presenting the work in an organized way. After looking at the options of data to select, the
people in our group decided to do Exhale Study for smokers and non-smokers. The first part of
our project was for us to organize our data. We used Stat Crunch and we focused only on gender
data. As we looked at the entire population of the data, 654 individuals we determined that 318
(48.62%) are female and 336 (51.38%) are male. Next we used Stat Crunch to generate two
different types of samples of 35 from the 654 population. We decided to use Simple Random
and Systematic methods for our project
Bowman 2

The simple random sample was obtained by adding a random column to the data set. The
function from Stat Crunch was used to populate each row with a random value between 0 and 1.
Bowman 3
The random values were copied out and the values pasted back in to prevent the values in the
random column from changing. The data was sorted by the random column from low to high.

Since the P value is greater than .01 we do not reject the null hypothesis.

The systematic sample was obtained by using the randomized data set samples at specific
intervals beginning with the first record in the data set.

Using the entire population and using StatCrunch, we were able to generate the mean and
standard deviation. we did the same for the Simple random sample for height. Which we used
StatCrunch to produce some histograms and boxplots.
For the quantitative variable we chose height. From there, we computed the mean and standard
deviation for the entire population.
To get our next step, we used Systematic Sampling.

Reflection
Throughout this class and this project I have been given a greater understanding of how
statistical data is generated. I am planning on getting my degree in social work and a lot data is
gained on studies like medication treatments Although I dont plan on further statistical classes
doing a project like this gives me insight into future studies that I am sure to rely in in the future.
