Dear readers,
We are thrilled to present you this years last issue.
I know, already! Time has fown away so fast and
we are quite happy to have spent it with you, our dear
and devoted readers, fans and friends.
Can you conceive a world without art? Impossible,
right? We have the same feeling here!
Art, is part of our everyday life as much as air is;
glance over at that kid who doodles on a piece of paper,
that guy over there who plays the guitar in the park or
the subway, that man there, who makes tiny sculptures
out of recycled cans, and dont you dare forget about
the great masterpieces displayed in museums or private
collectors mansions.
Art is one of those things which is accessible and
affordable for everyone, and the best thing is that, they
dont need to be experts to enjoy it!
We hope youll enjoy this 4th. issue as much as we
enjoyed putting it together!
Thank you for being at our side during this great
adventure that is Templum.

-Nickname: warnerator;
-Age: 21 years old;
-Country: United States of America;
-Studies: Self-taught;
-Tools: Zbrush and Photoshop.
Iron Giant: I was experimenting with all the new insert brushes and found it
to be tons of fun and super easy to make a robot from scratch within a few
minutes.
Dealing with 3D
programs has always
been a struggle since
there was never
anybody around
to help and tutor
me, so I built up
some knowledge of
3D programs and
decided to take it
further
http://warnerator.deviantart.com
10
Predator bust: I wanted to challenge myself with
a more complicated piece so I decided do the
predator alien from the Predator movies.
Spaceman: This piece was a good practice piece
for me to understand how to do more hard surface
stuff all inside of zbrush, Its challenging but fun.
Spongebob: This piece was defnitely one of my favorites to do, we had an assignment to recreate a
childhood cartoon, so I chose Spongebob since I knew I could make him as creepy as possible, so far this
has proven to be one of the most successful out of all my pieces because so many people love Spongebob
and they love the creepy spin I put on him.
Zbrush is my favorite 3D
program. I feel you have so
much freedom to do whatever
you want and do it quickly to
produce work
11
12
13
Turtlepig: The assignment was to mix two animals together and create some kind of hybrid between the two, so
I chose two completely different animals and integrated them both into a design that works and is believable and
created a character that has life and emotion to it.

Until the Light Take us: At the time of Ragnarok (the end of the world in Norse
mythology) Skalli and Hati will seek to outrun and devour the moon and the
sun. The blood of the moon will then darken the sky. In my imagination, Skalli
and Hati are robotic wolves with an infnite supply of energy. They have chased
the moon for thousands of years, caught up with it at the end of times, eaten it,
and now they have fallen back into their old patterns. They located bright fxed
points, that the sun and moon had given them, which now have disappeared
entirely. In Skallis and Hatis eyes, these bright beings are still the sun and
moon at their birth. The hunt is still on.
You know that you are <<all

trying to demystify the
specularity mapping of real

Enthroned: I have to reclaim my throne.
Following an oddly schemed masterplan and trying to reach something hard to reach, with my loved ones
or on my own
I think that <<perfection>> in 3D, is something like
a very very very distant and tall mountain, which
no one had successfully reached its top yet
17
Genius: Tom Hanks wants to travel to the moon. In 1970.
Almost 20 years later, your parents DNA combines with at a
bandwidth of 1,687.5 Terrabytes per second.
At the age of 6 you meet your best, and most trustworthy friend.
Youre 16. Emily asks you, during the break, if you could teach her
binomial series. Yours and Emilys DNA combine with a connection
of 1,687.5 TerraBytes per second. While the Internet gets quicker
and quicker, the Bionet stays constant, just like your oldest friend.
18
Ancient Area Network: Ive got my nickname at a party. We were playing FarCry and were just too
young to thinking about tomorrow. Eight people, spreaded over one foor for three days, while a storm was
unconvering the pantiles, which few around.
You have to love every bit of your creation,
be critical with yourself and never say that
you are good enough
19
Mercury: The main inspiration behind this piece is a piece of motherboard I once saw; it was completely
colored in grey like a piece of clay, or a texture-less 3D scene and it was illuminated by purple and yellow
lights. At the beginning, my aim was to create a highly detailed scene without any really noticeable shading
or textures just like the picture of the motherboard. But that looked like crap! And I wasnt able to achieve
that certain look I wanted to create, so I abolished that idea and began using textures and shades and gave
the whole scene some kind of old and used touch. After several discussions with friends and other artists,
who criticized the lack of life in this work, I added the cat. This was nearly the last element I added to
this piece and its almost the most important one.

Flashed worms: This picture is inspired by a popular kids toy; plasticine clay. At frst, one of my friends asked me
to depict what I thought of her. And here is the result; a funny and sweet picture. I like it how it carries us back to
our childhood, and you smile remember those endless hours playing and creating, and this is the result. I hope this
pic gave you a silly funny little moment.

Specularity: This works inspiration source was the new Adobe Master Collection
advertisement where they have these long columns which seem to explode from
the center of the image. After I saw it, I decided I wanted to do it my way. The
process was long, I have a couple of versions, but I chose this one as the fnal
one. I dont have regrets, because this piece ended up being the most popular
among all my other works. I have thousands of downloads and you can fnd quite
few places on the internet where it is shown and shared.
Ive read so much
tutorials, and I think who
wants to be a designer
must do this at frst
23
Red Passion: This pictures inspirational was eroticism: passion and women. The
transformation of girls into women is often represented by the rose and its petals.
When they become mens dream. The background shows freedom, the structure of
the main part represents motherhood for me.
Never stop develop yourself
and never stop learning.
Open your eyes and realize
the things of the world. Dont
be afraid to try new things
which you think are not like
other people
24
Genesis: Yep, this is my funniest work. I think everybody seen the comedy titled Look Whos talking and
like most of those who seen it, I loved it, when I was a kid. I didnt want to make it serious anyway, so the
spermatozoids got colors and eyes. This picture shows the race, when the frst gets the chance to become
a human. Of course, the oocyte doesnt look to real either, I just wanted to trigger your imaginationn.

Snow Castle: I wanted to prove to myself that I could put together something styled after more traditional
fantasy art instead of the more colourful and exaggerated stuff I tend to make. It was digitally painted and
textured in Adobe Photoshop CS6 with freely licensed stock photos.
29
Digital tools and programs arent there
to make art easier, theyre there when you
need them to convey your artistic message
30
Cityscapes: These cityscapes began as a series of pen and ink doodles in my sketchbook which I then
decided to scan and colour to play around with setting different moods and environments. The left city is
intended to give off a more fantastical, magical vibe; the middle one is a futuristic city styled after European
architecture; and the far right depicts the dark, seedy underbelly of an gloomy metropolis.

Akina: A long time ago, in Gion district in Kyoto, there was an extraordinary
geisha named Akina. She was so famous that all the places where she
performed were full and people fought for see her dance or just enjoy a
conversation for half the time it would take an incense stick to consume
itself. She loved her work above everything else. Work was her reason to
live and it became her perdition as well.

Oyuki: The legend says that the young Oyuki had the misfortune of being born with white hair as the fallen snow
and the eyes pink as the blooming Sakura.
People rejected her since her birth and they cursed her and her family for that, she never had a friend except the
snow, and Oyuki considered that the snow accepted her like no one else did, no friend, nor her family. When she
was happy the snow rested calm under the winter sun, but when she was upset there was terrible ice storms.
35
The Seas Calling: The old stories tell that, a long, long time ago, a girl with a strange blue eye was sold by her
parents to a flthy brothel of a little village in the coast. Umiko grew up between toothless fsherman, travelers,
drunk men, and the strong smell of the ocean, alcohol and the fsh rotting in the sun; she only had one dream,
escape of all that.
36
The Koi and the Red Lotus: A long time ago, in rough times of famine, lived in humble village, at the border
of the Aokigaharas forest, a young woman who dreamed of becoming a samurai warrior. Her name was Arashi
and she was seen as a crazy and feared by the locals who thought her tattoos were inappropriate for a woman.
She was left to live on her own in the forest. There, away from the civilization, she still wanted to become a great
warrior and in her quest of the bushido way, she soon she learned the dark secrets of the forest and the magic.
37
Purple: Eiko enjoyed night after night, the spectacular purple explosion from the blooming Sakuras, while lasted
the Yozakura, when the stars lighted dimly the black sky. She knew that she could never see them again bathed
in warm sunlight.

Lee Van Cleef: Caricature of Lee Van Cleef, the bad from The good, the bad and
the ugly. Ive always been a big fan from Sergio Leones westerns, this was my
special tribute to him.
Machete: Caricature of the actor Danny Trejo from the movie Machete directed by
Robert Rodrguez. Maybe this is one of my most complex works, specially for the
textures details.
I usually work with
sketches: pencil and
paper; this way I force
myself to think where

the frst as the actor himself and not as any of his emblematic characters (Han Solo, Indiana Jones)

Sound of Death: In this piece, I wanted to show what a dramatic and poetic song
represents. She is starring at nothing in her loneliness and the birds are attracted by the
sounds of death.
Warrior: A brave warrior in a world full of magic and color. Facing her
many enemies with her lightness and beauty.
The Last Song: Follows the same line of art Songs of Death, but its a
song of farewell from someone who gave up on life, who fnds no sense
to keep trying ... Giving your last breath with a last song.

turned into fre. She lost her mind. She lost her determination. Now, the only thing she can control is the

-Age: 21 years old;

-Tools: Graphite, oil, markers, colored pencil.
Saving fsh from Drowning: Helped me to escape from a series of oil paintings I was working on for
several months. The series of paintings I took a break from involved intricate details, making me artistically
frustrated. I submerged myself into this painting, using much larger brush strokes and often thick globs of
paint - an entirely different approach when compared to my past works. While the title of the painting was
taken by a book of the same name written by Amy Tan, the painting itself truly represents my own need to
breathe.
I love the physicality of
traditional art. You can brush
your fngers over it and
actually feel each individual
mark. Afer working on a

A spider sewed at night: Is a very in-the-moment self portrait. My oil paintings generally take anywhere from
one week to one month to complete; however, I managed to complete this painting in a single day. With my
skin layer shaded in graphite, I lightly glazed oil over the graphite. This is the frst step to all of my oil paintings;
however, for this piece, I kept the translucent, single layer for the completed piece instead of painting a number
of layers. With this piece, I acted entirely on my own natural impulse, metaphorically sewing as a spider with
the paint.
To the Lighthouse: Is one of my few planned paintings
which actually resembles my original thumbnail sketch.
I usually change my paintings a number of times while
theyre in progress, but this particular painting I spent
several hours in the compositional planning stages, so
I didnt want it to change. Both fgures are myself - the
one to the left is me as a child and the one to the right is
myself in the present. The painting represents my loss of
childhood innocence which is why the phallic lighthouse
stands erect above my present selfs head. Additionally,
Im offering the fruit of knowledge, an apple, to the
viewer. The head of my childhood self, placed below a
halo of grass, proves my childhood, natural innocence
in comparison to my corrupted, adult self.
91
Feeding time: Is one of my more erotic pieces because of the nude female and obviously phallic snake. At
the time, I was working on a number of childrens illustrations in marker and colored pencil which focused on
movement in a composition. With this piece, I wanted to achieve a similar compositional movement by utilizing
the same media but with a more adult subject matter.
Te wonderful thing about art is
that it always involves growth. As
my abilities as well as my interests
evolve, mygoals change

The grand Master Puppeteer: This fgure is a visual metaphor for addiction and once it has you it plays
you as its puppet.

reasons people do the things

Blind: This work refects anxiety. Anxiety is not the easiest emotion to display. So this is a depiction to the
sudden feeling of a complete state of being anxious. What would be ones feeling if the world went blind
for 30 seconds.
Im all out of love: This painting is about people who drain us of all our emotions and continue to take even
after the well runs dry.
95
The Romper Room: This painting is an exaggerated response to bad parenting. A while back I was
shopping in a store and some kid picked up a plastic bat and started knocking things over on the shelves.
Next, he started hitting me. His mother did nothing about it. I had to ask the mother to please stop your child
from hitting me. She asked him to stop and the kid screamed and continued. The mother did nothing; I was
shocked, but not amazed. I guess when one lets their child walk all over them the child therefore feels they
can do what they want.
I believe we start to develop
artistic skills when we are
born. Even as an infant we are
drawing with our imagination
96
Old, lost and confused: This painting is a refection to a personal experience. The fgure refects a senile old
man, which I met jogging in real life the other day. I had to call the police to help him get home; he was completely
lost and confused.

between the male and female
genders and that misbalance
is one of the main problems of
the actual society; secondly, the
knowledge about that misbalance
and how the society is being
conscious about that

Timebomb: This work is a portrait of a friend (deviantArt community volunteer), I made a speed painting
video during its realization to explain my way of creating a watercolor portrait. Name of the painting is
based on music I have put in the video.

Rain: (full name: When the rain washes you
clean, youll know). Name of this work was based
on a song, but the main thought is endurance.
Your personal life experience is the most valuable
treasure, obstacle is a friend and a coach, doing its
best to make you stronger.
Affection: Its about a state of mind on the edge
of reason, when emotion takes over your best
judgement.
Forgotten: Is about vanishing in time. Does it mean we never existed, once we vanish from peoples
memories?
Traditional painting hanging
on your wall brings so much
energy, charisma and is so very
personal

Autumn colours: Something warm I painted at my vacation at the Sea sometime ago. I just wanted to
draw something warm and happy, which a bit can maybe bring spiritual feelings to the watcher. As Autumn
is my favourite season it was a good lead with the colour theme for this painting.
As youngster, my grandmother
ofen took me to museums,
galleries and she always
made a little quiz for me from
the pictures we had seen. She
wrote up for me the title and
the artist who painted it and
at night she asked me by titles
who painted them and I had
to answer

No rest for the Wicked one: An art which was born out of emotional overload over a serious health
issue I had sometime back. I just wanted to draw out what I could not tell out on a way which can
close it inside and let me free from the frustration. The work turned out something even more, not only
sealed the feelings away but gave birth to something more deep and strong. Something which by today
pleasant to think about and remember. I used several symbolical signs here and the work both suppose
to give negative and positive feelings, a bit of ying-yan by the idea that no light without dark, nor dark
without light.
113
Stretching and Magic: Something I revamped from my early childhood to see how much my skills and
ideas changed since then. I think I changed a lot and was fun experience to work with coloured pencils
without using a rubber eraser. It started as fun but I liked doing it too much that I ended up fnishing it.
Not perfect, but I can always learn from it.

Burning desires: An art I did for a lovely artist of her character in my style. It was surely a great
experience to work with something out of my own comfort zone and see the result. I am fairly
happy how it turned out though I still think I could do a bit better.

Deathword: Its weird when people keep commissioning me characters that are homosexual or something
related to that. Well I think Im just over reacting much.
Im not sure how to make of it when she sent me the reference. Its just that I prefer something more detail
and bigger size ref.
Garvins information is just totally blew my mind and I was determine to make him as pretty as I could
possibly work on.
I started of slowly by
drawing or copying human
or animal anatomies.

Suemao: Originally this was based on a really sketchy reference with typed information regarding the
character.
This one was really hard, as I had really bad planning skills for composition and have a fancy taste for
details. The way I look at it now I think I could do better work on it. I guess my perfectionism keep me from
kicking my old works even though its not as old as I thought.

Mousama no Kyuukon: Based on the classic girl visual novel.
To think my shading was upgraded from this to de present state in just one
year, Im pretty puzzled by myself.
It was slightly inspired by Hellobabys detail accessories and patterns and
the characters as well. I had a hard time not laughing when drawing this
picture because it kept reminding me of the characters plots.
120
ShrimpHeby: is a piece about dellusion and betrayal. Not necessarily a love betrayal, because anything
in life can betray us. Its one of the most vicious and bitter feelings.
121
Exclaimed: Its possible to achieve something so detailed with the likes of pencil or mechanical pencil for
my case.
No. Im not saying digital is not good just that Im in bad terms with it.
Thanks to Exclaimeds characters details it was really fun to draw this beautiful character.

Two Sides Soul: This was a drawing for an art contest.
The background and details were done completely by me
using the default paint tools. In this illustration I tried to
illuminate the characters two sides/personalities/ souls
by the facial expression. You can tell theyre the same
person by the eyes, and scars, but if you look closely their
expressions show you all.

something fresh with unusual and extravagant touches.

Digital art tutorial:
demonic explosion
sandro rybak
I start my paintings with a 50% grey
background. In the initial sketch, I could
already have established the basic
shapes and colors, and then I would start
sketching the actual painting.
1
I always start working in black and white.
The reason for proceeding like this is
that Im really terrible with values and
tend to use unsaturated colors when
starting. The goal was to create a demon
sorceress in the middle of an explosion. I
wanted to make it a little bit different and
went for a giant growing skull destroying
the environment.
2
131
3
I added the frst shapes for the foreground, rocks, stuff fying around.
132
4
5
In the fnal part i wanted to add some
more shapes to the foreground like loose
rocks fying in the direction of the watcher.
I wasnt very happy with the foreground
so I changed some stuff. Added some
more reds and purples, because Ithought
the color pallet was lacking some warmer
colors
Here, I tried to add the frst layers of color.
I always experiment with the overlay
modes to get the greatest effect out of it.
Sometimes paintings look like they were
just flled with one color, making the
artwork look boring. For my base I tried to
use different shades of blue and azure, to
get more depth, again experimenting with
blending modes. I also used some little
hints of brown here and there.
I love to use the circular gradient tool for
coloring in the beginning phase so the
colors can mix with each other, besides
I added sparks to fow into the whole
explosion/destruction theme. I had some
old photos of me and my brother playing
with sparklers I could use these for the
sparks of the giant skull in a new overlay
mode.
