Laws of Thermodynamics

Thermodynamics is one of the most important subjects for

competitive exam point of view to understand the phenomenon
of thermodynamics it is very necessary to understand the Laws of
Thermodynamics. Thermodynamics laws deal with the sum total of energy
and heat transitions within a system.

Thermodynamics is the study of energy.

Must Read: Thermodynamics Terminology

Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics:

It states that when any two bodies are in thermal equilibrium with third,
they are also in thermal equilibrium with each other.

First Law of Thermodynamics:

It states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed. It changes from
one form to other. It is also known as the principle of conservation of
energy.

Second Law of Thermodynamics:

According to Kelvin plank statement- No cyclic process is possible whose
result is the flow of heat from a single heat reservoir and the performance
of an equivalent amount of work on a work reservoir.

According to Clausius statement- No cyclic process is possible whose result
is the flow of heat out of a heat reservoir at one temperature and the flow
of an equal quantity of heat into a second reservoir at a high temperature.

Third Law of Thermodynamics

Third law of thermodynamic says that all processes cease as the temperature
approaches absolute zero. This is the temperature at which molecules cease movement,
cease producing kinetic energy. In other words, there is no energy.

Summary:

1st Law of Thermodynamic: Conservation of energy

2nd Law of Thermodynamic: Conservation of entropy

Zeroth Law of Thermodynamic: Thermal equilibrium
