Obtain a position with a government agency or environmental consulting firm to expand knowledge of field work practices and grow as an environmental professional
RECENT RESEARCH
Internal Phosphorus Loading Moscow, Idaho Environmental Science Thesis, University of Idaho 8/13 - 5/14
Supervisor: Dr. Frank Wilhelm Study Site: Fernan Lake, Coeur dAlene, Idaho Description: Measured internal phosphorus loading rates from intact sediment cores extracted from a highly eutrophide lake. Time consisted of field work, intense lab analysis, stakeholder meetings, and a presentation of findings at the annual EPSCoR conference in Coeur dAlene, Idaho
Acquired Skills Comfortable with proper lab procedures Proficient in EPA standard phosphorus analysis Experience working individually or as part of a team Problem solving, relating to lab set-up, data collection, and team work Able to easily communicate and work with a variety of stakeholders
EDUCATION
University of Idaho Moscow, Idaho Bachelor of Science, Environmental Science (geology and hydrology focus) May 2014 GPA 3.50
Limnology Assessed water quality based on invertebrate population, water chemistry, and physical characteristics Performed a pond analysis for a land owner and prepared comprehensive report Ground Water Hydrology Comfortable using Darcys equation to calculate conductivity, discharge, etc. Capable of solving basic hydrological problems Techniques of Ground Water Study Performed a slug test and pump test on wells in the UI Groundwater Field Lab Calculated hydraulic conductivity using slug test data Environmental Hydrology Explored methods of ground water remediation Determined how effective porosity, advection, diffusion, hydrodynamic dispersion, and average linear velocity affect plume migration
Idaho EPSCoR, National Science Foundation Moscow, Idaho Miles Undergraduate Research Intern 1/14 - 5/14 Collected sediment cores from field sites, to be incubated in lab Measured internal loading of phosphorus from lake sediments Determined sediment water and organic content
Sustainability Center, University of Idaho Moscow, Idaho Energy Evaluation Intern 8/12 12/12 Performed energy audits for eight local businesses Evaluated energy consumption, building efficiency, and business behavior Calculated energy use, with assistance from Avista, to produce a 20 page client report outlining conservation techniques and economic savings
OUTREACH
Watershed and Water Quality Science Moscow, Idaho Palouse Prairie School field trip 4/3/14
In conjunction with two teachers at the Palouse Prairie School, I organized a field trip for a group of 50 fourth and fifth grade students. The goal of the field experience was to illustrate how water moves through a landscape.
Exposed students to field water testing techniques as well as proper scientific method Students collected depth, reach, velocity, transparency, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and pH Sampled and analyzed invertebrate population.
Students observed how the characteristics of the stream evolved from the top to the bottom of the watershed. An importance was placed on conserving and protecting water resources.
VOLUNTEER WORK
Saturday of Service 2011 Aided a local historic building in yard and building maintenance Leave No Trace 2012 Removed trash and debris from Spring Valley Reservoir, Troy, ID Wetland Maintenance 2013 - 2014 Removed invasive plants, planted willow trees, maintained boardwalk
