 Resolution  in  Support  of  Eliminating  All  Student  Registration  Fees  Used  To  Fund  The  Department  of  
Intercollegiate  Athletics.

WHEREAS,  the  students  at  the  University  of  California,  Berkeley  pay  registration  fees;  and,    

WHEREAS,  the  University  is  experiencing  a  budget  crisis;  and,    

WHEREAS,  students  are  facing  increased  fees  and  costs,  and  decreased  services  because  of  the  
aforementioned  budget  crises;  and,    

WHEREAS,  a  registration  fee  in  the  amount  of  $69.79  per  academic  school  year  per  student  is  allocated  
directly  to  the  Department  of  Intercollegiate  Athletics;  and,    

WHEREAS,  a  registration  fee  in  the  amount  of  $2.60  per  academic  school  year  per  student  is  allocated    
directly  for  the  salary  and  expenses  for  the  Faculty  Athletic  Representative;  and,  

WHEREAS,  the  Faculty  Athletic  Representative  serves  the  Department  as  a  liaison  to  the  NCAA;  and,    

WHEREAS,  the  aforementioned  fees  are  not  optional;  and,  

WHEREAS,  these  fees  directly  benefit  the  Division  1  Athletes,  who  comprise  less  than  1000  students;  
and,  

WHEREAS,  there  are  over  30,000  non-­‐athlete  students  on  campus;  and,  

WHEREAS,  these  non-­‐athlete  students  participate  in  the  Department  of  Intercollegiate  Athletics  at  their  
own  discretion,  as  spectators;  and,    

WHEREAS,  the  non-­‐athlete  students  have  an  option  to  contribute  to  Intercollegiate  Athletics  in  the  form  
of  tickets  if  they  wish  to  view  certain  Intercollegiate  Athletic  Competitions  as  non-­‐academic  
entertainment;  and,    

WHEREAS,  not  all  students  have  the  resources,  be  it  time  or  money,  to  view  such  types  of  optional  
entertainment,  and,  

WHEREAS,  all  UC  Berkeley  students  are  currently  being  charged  for  the  production  of  these  
Intercollegiate  Athletic  competitions,  which  serve  as  one  of  many  forms  of  optional  entertainment  on  
campus;  and,    

WHEREAS,  the  Department  of  Intercollegiate  Athletics  is  supposed  to  be  auxiliary,  and  financially  self-­‐
sustaining;  and,  
WHEREAS,  the  Department  of  Intercollegiate  Athletics  has  run  a  deficit  of  at  least  10  million  dollars  for  
the  past  4  out  of  5  years;  and,  

WHEREAS,  these  deficits  are  covered  by  loans  from  the  UC  Berkeley  Campus;    

THEREFORE  BE  IT  RESOLVED,  that  the  Associated  Students  of  the  University  of  California  (ASUC)  hereby  
request  that  the  university  not  collect  any  fees  for  the  direct  or  indirect  benefit  of  Intercollegiate  
Athletics,  commencing  with  the  Spring  2010  semester,  and  thereafter;  and  

FURTHER  RESOLVED,  that  the  ASUC  Academic  Affairs  Vice  President  and  the  ASUC  President  write  
letters  to  the  Academic  Senate  expressing  the  ASUC  stance  on  this  issue;  and,    

FURTHER  RESOLVED,  that  the  ASUC  recommends  that  the  Chancellor  take  the  necessary  measures  to  
make  the  Department  of  Intercollegiate  Athletics  financially  self-­‐sustained.
