Love over death!

Faulkner and Weldon have similar writing styles when it comes to A Rose for
Emily and IND AFF. Faulkner delivered a well written story of a woman that was
shelter from the outside world and later has a hard time interacting with the town
people. On the other hand, Weldon gave the reader a character that could have used
shelter at a young age. This could have prevented her from lusting after someone else
husband.
Faulkner and Weldon both used foreshadowing to introduce the readers to A
Rose for Emily and IND AFF. It is amazing how two stories begin with an eye opening
statement that gave the reader insight to what was going to happen next. A Rose for
Emily stated off with when Miss Emily Grierson died, our whole town went to her
funeral (84).This line tied the beginning and the ending together.IND AFF pulled the
reader in with this is a sad story (172). With these two catchy lines, the reader wants
to continue reading the story and find out what is going to happen next. In both stories
the main character starts off as a consistent character. With all the changes throughout
the story, the reader will understand what make a strong short story.
The point of view is the key to success when Faulkner and Weldon deliver the
two stories. Faulkner took the approach of objective third person and Weldon used first
person narrator.
In both cases, the authors choose the best way to explain the main character
deposition. The benefit from having the story told in first person is the graduate student
in IND AFF was able to tell her side of the story. The down fall of Faulkner objective
third person is Emily didnt have a chance to explain her action during the story. So
many people make prejudgment of what really happen; only the person involved can be
a creditable source to tell to story.
In A Rose for Emily and IND AFF story, Weldon and Faulkner create a vision
of a woman conflicted with love. Although both stories had many similarities, Faulkners
A Rose for Emily lacked a clear cut plot in the story. Weldon delivered the plot in IND
AFF as the graduate school learning about realization in life. Weldon gave supporting
detail throughout the story on how the graduate student rationalizes her feeling for
Peter. The different between Emily and the graduate school is realization. In the IND
AFF story, the graduate student went to dinner with Peter. During their dinner she
realized he still had feeling for his chlorinated swimming-coach wife (174).
Weldon and Faulkner introduce two females that are complex characters, but
different. Emily is a protagonist character because she lives life in the same routine and
has no regards for change. Emily didnt have many people inside her social group. The
narrator introduce Emily as a tradition, a duty, and a care; a sort of hereditary obligation
upon the town (84). When you look at graduate student in IND AFF she is a dynamic
character in the story. In the story of IND AFF the graduate student .is perceived as
immature. She is jealous of Claras marriage to a Harvard professor. The graduate
student and Peter went away on vacation to sort through feeling for each other. Homer
Barron in A Rose for Emily is a flat character, because the narrator gives very little
about his character.
Peter is a round character. Peter enters into a relationship with a student even
though he had a wife. The difference between Homer and Peter is; Peter was still in
love with his wife and couldnt bring himself to let her go. With all this being said,
Faulkner gave his main character names in the story. Weldon never gave the real name
of the graduate school.
When looking at the two main female characters in A Rose for Emily and IND
AFF they were similar in many ways. Both ladies fell in love with a man that was well
respected in the community. The student in IND AFF seen Peter as six foot two and
grizzled, muscled with it, in a dark-eyed, intelligent, broad-jawed kind of way (174).
Emily viewed Homer as marriage material, but homer used he was not a marrying
man (88). Emily and the graduate student is chase after a dream for love. Both authors
gave support factors for the ladies action through the stories, which made Weldon and
Faulkner style similar.
Weldon and Faulkner stories took place in two different areas. A Rose for Emily
and IND AFF was developed base from the location of the story. Weldon took IND
AFF to a area where a assassin happen and the continuous rain. Faulkner used the
setting to give Emilys life meaning. If the setting of A Rose for Emily and IND AFF
switched, Emilys would still be protagonist character by nature.
Faulkner and Weldon gave the reader many different symbolisms in A Rose for Emily
and IND AFF. In Faulkners A Rose for Emily, the Griersons house

is described as an eyesore among eyesores (93) in the South. As Emily ages
during the story, she becomes an eyesore too. The narrator uses the words such as
fallen monument, which explains her current beauty. Also, Homer Barron is a symbol
representing the modernization of the South. Homer came into town to pave the
sidewalks for the summer, but found Emily to occupy his free time. In IND AFF the rain
helps build the tone of the story. The tone was set by the opening remarks This is a
sad story (172). The rain is an example of traditional symbols. When it rains outside,
people get depressed and want to sleep. The narrator of IND AFF felt bad at the end
of the story about trying to separate Peter and his wife. Peter and the graduate student
went away on a trip to figure out if they were to be together. Peters wife is at home
waiting for him to return. At the end, the student smelled chlorine on Peters head; which
made it easy for her to leave and never look back. The chlorine represented the wife
Peter is married too and loved. The student knew she couldnt cause problems between
the couple.
Another difference in the two stories is the climax. The climax in A Rose for Emily is
when Emily went to the drug store to purchase arsenic. The reader didnt know she if
was going to take her life or his. At this point the reader knows Emily only sees death
(dark clouds).
On the other hand, the climax in IND AFF is when the graduate student meets
the waiter. The graduate student notices that she could have eyes for another man. She
didnt need to unhinge a marriage to find love.
In conclusion, love is a dangerous game to play with. The graduate student and
Emily took a ride on the roll coaster to destruction with love. Unfortunately, Emily
passes before she was able to live and learn. The graduate student was able to see her
mistake in live and learn how to fixes them. The graduate student used the assassin of
the Archduke and his wife. She remembers that he had a second chance to make a
difference.
