, 5th
Mentor: Travis Summers Campus/District: Griffis
Elementary, Caddo Mills
ISD
Date: 3/31/14
Overall Goal of Lesson: Students will learn the correct technique of throwing and become more accurate
throwing with a larger arc. They will also use their non locomotor skills and be able to explain the rules
of the game and how to keep score.
Instructional Objectives: The students will demonstrate the correct throwing technique as well as their
knowledge of how to keep score.
Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills (TEKS) &
ELPS: (F) demonstrate a variety of relationships in
dynamic movement situations such as under, over,
behind, next to, through, right, left, up, or down. (A)
identify goals to be accomplished during simple
games such as not getting tagged. (K) demonstrate
competence in manipulative skills in dynamic
situations such as overhand throw, catch, shooting,
hand dribble, foot dribble, kick, and striking
activities such as hitting a softball; and
(L) demonstrate combinations of locomotor and
manipulative skills in complex and/or game-like
situations such as pivoting and throwing, twisting
and striking, and running and catching.(A) follow
rules, procedures, and etiquette;
(B) use sportsmanship skills for settling
disagreements in socially acceptable ways such as
remaining calm, identifying the problem, listening to
others, generating solutions, or choosing a solution
that is acceptable to all.
Key Vocabulary: step, follow through, arc
Higher Order Questions: Explain how you can get a ball to go where you want it to.
Student Activities: Human hula hoop shoot. The students will be divided into two teams. There will be 5
hula hoops on each side of the gym with the volleyball net up. 5 members of a team
will stand inside the hula hoops and hold the hula hoops around their waist, the
remaining team members will go on the other side of the gym. They will then throw
gopher balls over the net and try to make it into the hula hoops on their other side.
Once they make the ball into a hula hoop, the person that makes it switches with the
team member in the hula hoop. The person in the hoop then goes and gets a popsicle
stick and puts it in their teams bucket. This is how they keep score.
Modifications/ELL Strategies: Modeling,
move the hula hoops back for higher
grades, make scoring more complex for
higher grades, allow blocking for older
students
Anticipatory Activity for Lesson: Play a throwing game the
week before.
