GRADE 11 GENERAL MUSIC CREATIVE

ASSESSMENT


Task Abstract

Each student will create an accompaniment for Jesu, Joy of Mans Desiring on either
the guitar or marimba. They will perform their personal accompaniment while a
partner plays the melody.

Benchmarks

1. Students will analyze the melody of Jesu, Joy of Mans Desiring to choose
appropriate chords
2. Students will create an accompaniment for Jesu, Joy of Mans Desiring.
3. Students will perform for the class.

9.1.8.A: Know and use the elements and principles of each art form to create works
in the arts and humanities.

9.1.8.B: Recognize, know, use and demonstrate a variety of appropriate arts
elements and principles to produce, review and revise original works in the arts.

Task Objectives

Students will:

1) Create an accompaniment for Jesu, Joy of Mans Desiring.
2) Analyze the melody to choose an appropriate chord.
3) Perform their piece for the class.

Task Description

After learning to play Jesu, Joy of Mans Desiring, students will create an
accompaniment on the guitar or marimba and perform it with a partner.

1) Students will create their own accompaniment.
2) Students will practice with their partner.
3) Students will perform for the class.


Resources Required

1) Marimba or Guitar
2) Mallets
3) Music
4) Staff paper
5) Practice space


Prior Learning Required

Before completing the creative assessment, the students will learn the marimba.
They will learn basic chord structure, how to read music, and how to notate music.

Possible Teaching Strategies

1) Review the triad
2) Review key signatures
3) Show examples of piano music with a single melody line
