Why are carrots good for your eyes?

Carrots contain vitamin A, which you need for all sorts of body tissue
functions. One of these is the formation of eye pigments involved in good
night vision.
Of course, eating carrots wont cure the need for glasses, but a deficiency in
vitamin A could harm your sight. Leafy green vegetables and deep orange
vegetables are other foods rich in vitamin A.
Which holds more water, the oceans or the atmosphere of
earth?
By far, the oceans. They hold about 97% of Earths water. The atmosphere
only holds one-onethousandth of a percent, which is nonetheless greater than
what all our rivers hold combined.
What is carbon dioxide made of?
Carbon dioxide is made up of one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms. It can
be created by any living animal as a by-product of metabolism. When animals
(and plants) break down sugars to get the energy in them, they create carbon
dioxide and exhale it out.
Why does it not hurt when you cut yourfinger nails?
It doesnt hurt because there are no sensory nerves in your fingernails. If you
hit your fingernail with a hammer, it hurts because the force is transmitted to
the underlying finger with its rich supply of sensory nerves. But the fingernail
itself is actually not living tissue, and it has no blood supply (which is why you
dont bleed when you cut your fingernails), no nerve supply, no pain.
How do ants smell odours and what are pheromones?
Have you ever noticed how quickly ants react if you step on their anthill?
Within seconds, they will come pouring out of the ground in order to protect
their home and queen. They can have such a quick response because of
pheromones.
Pheromones are special chemicals that are used as a type of language
among some animals. Ants use pheromones because they are social insects,
and need to communicate within their nest.
There is a food-signaling pheromone that helps them make those long trails to
food, and there are panic pheromones that tell them to begin protecting the
nest from attack.
Ants can detect these pheromones using special receptors on their antenna.
Ants need these pheromones because they have to live and work in such a
big group, and they need a way to communicate in order to make things work
right.
Do eyes grow?
Your eyes do grow as you age, but only a little bit. This is why babies have
such big eyes. The rest of their bodies is much smaller than a full grown adult,
but their eyes are about the same size. So as you grow, your face and body
get much bigger to catch up with your eyes.
What is stronger than steel and finer than human hair?
Spider silk has a stronger tensile strength than steel. And it is finer than
human hair.
What makes sounds different from one another?
Every sound you hear is produced by a vibration. If you put your hand on your
throat when you talk, you can feel the vibrations you make. Sounds are
different because they have different vibrations. Some have a faster vibration
and others have slower ones. The hearing range for humans includes sound
with between 20 and 20,000 vibrations per second.
Can bats see?
Yes, actually bats have pretty good eyesight. But they dont see very well in
the dark, which is when they hunt for food. So instead of vision, they depend
on echolocation.
They make very fast, high-pitched cries that bounce off objects in their path,
and when they echo back the bat can tell where things are even in complete
darkness things like tasty bugs to eat for dinner.
Why is wood such a good heat insulator?
Wood contains pockets of air. Its porous. So it takes a lot longer for heat to
be transmitted through it.
How does glasses help us see?
Your eyes work like lenses, bending or refracting the light (and images) you
see. But sometimes our eyes refract the light wrongly and the image gets
blurry instead of clear. Usually, this is because the refracted light waves reach
the back of your eye at the wrong place. So wearing glasses redirects the light
waves so that they reach the right place in your eye.
Why does ice cream melt?
Ice cream has ice crystals in it. That is whats frozen. Things exist in different
phases, solid, liquid, or gas, depending on their temperature. What you know
as ice cream is simply the solid phase. When the ice crystals melt, the ice
cream turns liquidy!
Understanding static electricity
Static electricity is caused by the flow of electrons. When you walk across a
carpet, your feet shuffle and pick up extra electrons from the carpet. Your
body now contains extra electrons. When you touch a metal door knob, all
these extra electrons from the carpet shoot from your body into the metal in
the form of a spark.
Does a ant have a skeleton?
Ants have an exoskeleton. This means their skeleton is on the outside of
their bodies. But their skeleton doesnt look like a human skeleton. An ants
exoskeleton is like armour. It completely covers the outside of the ant and
protects its soft insides.
Why do people put fruit in paper bags?
It helps to ripen them. Fruit gives off ethylene gas, which is involved in
ripening. Putting the fruit in a bag keeps the ethylene a little bit closer to the
fruit than leaving it out in the open.
How do fruits and vegetables like potatoes and lemons produce
electricity?
Inside a lemon, for instance, are various molecules and an acid. When mixed
together, they serve as an electrolyte. An electrolyte is a substance which has
ions. A simple elecrolyte is salt dissolved in water. The salt breaks into
sodium and chloride ions. The lemon has ions inside it.
When you insert the electrodes into the lemon, electrons travel from one
electrode to the other through the lemon. The chemical reaction between the
electrodes causes a weak electric current. The lemon only makes the transfer
of electrons easier. Lemons are not the only food that does this!! You can find
directions on how to make a potato battery at: http://van.hep.uiuc.

Do plants need water to live even if we give them fertiliser every
days (do they need water even after we give them food)?
Plants make their own food, so really you dont need to give them fertiliser.
However, they do need water in order to make this food, and for transport of
nutrients from the root system to other parts of the plant.
How long does it take to digest food?
It really depends upon what you eat. If you eat lots of fruits and vegetables,
they go through faster. They are made up mostly of cellulose, which is fibrous,
and we cannot digest it.
High fat and high protein foods take longer to digest. Also, kids guts are a
little shorter, so you might digest faster than the standard 24 hours. How long
did it take you, and what did you eat?
How fast does blood travel through the human body?
In a normal artery, blood will be flowing at about 10 centimetres per second.
Of course, if your arteries are narrower than normal, your blood will move
faster.
Approximately, how many cells does a human body have?
There are between 50 and 75 trillion cells in the human body.
What does light do to make plants grow?
The light really doesnt do anything. Its the plant that does all the work!
Plants make much of their own food using water and carbon dioxide, and they
use the energy from the sunlight to combine the two. Many of their leaf cells
have chloroplasts, which absorb energy from sunlight and use this energy to
link together carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen molecules (in the water and the
carbon dioxide) into carbohydrates and sugars. These chemical reactions are
sparked by the energy they take in form light. Thanks for question!
Why is it easier to float in salt water?
Salt water is denser than fresh water. Because of this, it can hold up more
weight, making it easier for you to float.
What is the only bird that can swim but not fly?
A penguin.
Why are rocks you find at the beach smooth while rocks from
other areas are rough?
Rocks on the beach have spent lots of time being pushed around by the surf.
They are in constant movement and friction with each other and with the
sand. This causes them to wear down and have their rough edges removed.
Its just like sanding a piece of wood. You see the same thing in river rock.
