During these past years in Thailand, they have become fluent in the Thai language, so that they are certified by the Government of Thai land to teach! They, together with the others of the Team of the South East Asia Mission, have launched the Chiangmai Bible Institute. Key Asian Christian leaders have already arrived even from other countries for training in Chiangmai Bible Institute in Thailand. Recently Paul reported that the teachers and students in C.B.I, speak TWENTY-FIVE LANGUAGES! What a tremendous opportunity for us to teach these Asian students WHAT TO TEACHthe Word of Godso that they can spread that in 25 languages! Paul and Cris and their family are needing to return to the U.S.A. for their furlough. They are to leave Thailand this summer. After furlough, in 1978, they plan to return to Thailand. However, they urgently need TRAVEL FUNDSat least $4,000. Can you help out in this? Can you send $500, $200, $100 or $50 for their travel? Their forwarding agent is Ruth Davenport, 717 21st Street West, Bradenton, Florida 33505. Checks should be made out to "South East Asia MissionPaul Fuller Fund." They urgently need travel funds before the end of May, so that they can buy their tickets in time. In addition, Paul and Cris and their family will need to have additional living-link support as they prepare to return to Thailand. Paul is serving as the Academic Dean of Chiangmai Bible Institute, and is very vital for the Lord's work. He is to take further studies in America on furlough. Also, Paul and Cris will be available to speak at churches, rallies, conventions, and Bible colleges for the furthering of the Gospel in Aisa. They will want to recruit new missionaries, too. Can you invite them to speak? Would you please join us in daily prayer-support for them? Would you participate with us In their financial support for their vital work of soul-winning and training Asian Christian leaders in Asia? l^urs together for the Gospel in Asia, R. Many things have been happening tg and Cris Fuller. Paul and Cris have adopted Cwo-^TtiCf""babies - twin girls. The girls were bom on October 15, 1976. Though Paul and Cris had talked for many months about adopting a Thai child, the situation arose rather abruptly in November. They were told that there were twin girls who were avail able for adopting. Paul and Cris quickly made a decision not to seperate the girls and to adopt them both if possible. Trips to the village and to various government offices followed, and on December 7, Pranee and Pranom became officially Cristine Marie and Melissa Ann Fuller. Also, during these past years in Thailand, they have become fluent in the Thai language so that they are certified by the Government of Thailand to teach! They, together with the others of the team of the South East Asia Mission, have launched the Chiangmai Bible Institute. Paul is serving as the Academic Dean of the Bible Institute, and is very vital for the Lord's work. Cris and the children are in the states now, and Paul is studying in Germany until August. Another famil^oare^^'- "in Thailand now is Paul and Elaine' Parrish. They left the States on /"February 2nd, and arrived in Bangkok on February 8th. When they arrived in Chiangmai they were greeted by all the mission team. On March 3 Paul and Elaine began language study at the Union Language School in Bangkok. The first class session was truly a frustrating experience. Hearing the different sounds of the Central Thai language was not unusual because we had heard them sopken before. But, how im possible it seemed for us to produce the same sounds! NEEDS Prayer Is the key element in mission work. Please pray for the needs below. Many churches (about 20) are involved In monthly support of the Fullers' work, the largest for about $100 per month. Approximately $600 per- month total living and service link was received In 1976. This regular support is vital, and needs to be increased up to the amounts below. In addition, there are many small and large Items which are needed on the field In Thailand. WILL YOU TAKE THESE NEEDS SERI OUSLY, AS YOU MAY BB ABLE AND LED TO DO SO? LIVING-LINK SUPPORT. $700/month, used for ail personal expenses, including insurance; rent, food, clothes, med ical, etc. SERVICE-LINK SUPPORT $500/month, used for the Asian Christians: books, scholarships, evangelistic trips, etc. $35 per month supports one student total ly at CBI. We are hoping to include ten of these from the $500. MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS. $200 for a gong-circle; $75 for a xylophone; $15 for hand cymbals. TAPE RECORDERS. $100 per reel-to-reel. $15 per cassette. Music and language study. CLOTHING. Used jackets, coats, scarves, gloves, etc. (Only slender sizes for Asians, please. Ha!) TYPEWRITER. $700 for one IBM dual Thai-English. This will be used for literature. TRANSCRIPTION SYSTEM. $700 for SONY M-IOIB, BM25A, MA40, BP31B, AC31B. This will be used for writing letters and literature. CAN YOU FILL ONE NEED ABOVE? Checks should be made payable to "South East Asia Evangelizing Mission - Paul Fuller" and sent to: RUTH DAVENPORT, Forwarding Agent 717 21st Street West Bradenton, Florida 33505 (Ail contributions are considered tax-deductibleby IRS) S 0 u T H E A S T A S 1 A E V A N G E L I Z 1 N G 1 S S 1 0 N "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and counsel one another with all wis dom, and as you sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude In your hearts to God." -Col. 3:16 NIV A WORD ABOUT MUSIC What kind of hymn? American? Thai? Is the American music Christian and, the Thai music pagan? What church music is best in South East Asia? The plain fact is that these questions are too.seldom asked. Usually, Christians assume that their music is best, and they convey this thought clearly to new converts. The converts, wishing only to please God, can tell from a shrug, a frown, or a wince what pleases the missionary. They take his music. The Fullers' own answering of these questions, from the discipline of ethnomuslcology, is quite different. They believe that just as God can use a "pagan" word for His deepest truths, or "pagan" dress, or food, or customs, so He can use "pagan" music. IF THESE THINGS ARE NEUTRAL, or IF THEIR MEANING CAN CHANGE, then they can be used in church. In 99 out of 100 cases this can be done. So after investigating a music culture, Paul usually urges that It be used in the church. Thus he looks forward to churches, TV's, and radios In Asia filled with Asian Christian music, and he works toward this end, together with many Asians. Paul is a preacher and an ethno- musicologist, while Cris teaches music and languages, and has experience as a guidance counselor. While serving churches In Ohio, Kentucky, and New York, Paul completed the B.A. in Bible (CBS, 1967), M.M. in piano (University of Cincinnati, 1971), and residence work for the M.Ph. and Ph.D. (Colum bia University, N.Y.). While in Thailand the Fullers served In many ways, including teaching, counseling, planning, administration, amateur radio operation, music re search, refugee work, house parentage, etc. The main work was Bible teaching. Paul and Cris believe the SEAEM work in Southeast Asia is Biblically sound, strategically wise, evangellstically pro ductive, and very exciting. They are eager to return to this work. Paul and Cris helped todesign and build this building, together with the whole SEAEM team. SOUTH EAST ASIA - A STRATEGIC FIELD The "hump" area of South East Asia - where northern Thailand and Burma, northeastern India, and southwestern China join the Himalayan Mountains - is crucial to the spreading of the Gospel to millions of people who are presently re ceptive to the claims of Christ. The tribal people travel relatively freely across these frontiers. Reaching these people tor Christ will ultimately result in the Gospel's spread to China as well as Thailand, Burma, and India. Good stewardship will result from applying much manpower as well as material support while the field is receptive. The task of Chiangmal Bible Institute, one "arm" of SEAEM, Is to train preachers and leaders ef fectively to evangelize and to develop mature Christians among these tribal people, as well as among the Thai people. Chiangmal Bible Institute also supplies teachers for seminars in other locations, such as Rangoon, Burma, and Shillong, India, when requested by the churches in these places. Presently, over 20 languages are represented among the students of CBI. An exciting phase of the work at CBI will be to Include translation of the Bible and class notes in these languages as class assignments so that the Bible and Christian literature will become available in these other languages. In addition, an important part of the students' learning at CBI is to put into practice what has been studied by teaching the material to people in the villages, reinforcing their own knowledge as well as conveying It to others. "Learning by doing" is an important ground-rule for study at Chiangmal Bible Institute. Today the students are -mvolved in making radio programsfor 5EAEM's broadcasts.' In the future, the Fullers hope to expand this pro gramming with more use of Asian music and drama and greater outreach to the Thai Buddhists. tHAN.AMD INDONESIA ETNAM PHILIPPfNES 1 SOUTH EAST ASIA EVANGELIZING MISSION South East Asia Christian Services Missionaries: Kathken Anderson Paul and Chris Fuller Max and Rosabel Haven Jerry and Pam Headen Daniel and Beverley Kalnin LaVeme and Lois Morse Paul and Elaine Pairish Peter and Ruth Stuja3>un George and Jeannie Than Win Douglas and Geri Umbanhowar Tim Viner Louis Hall (and Patsy), Travelling EvangehA Russell Hall (and Gleoda), Field Representative 2700 Glenway Avenue Cincinnati, Ohio 45204 September 1, 1977 Mission Treasurerss James and Doris Florey Box 581 Mokena, Illinois 60448 ^^ardof Directors: /Box 581 / Mokena, Illinois 60448 Dear fellow Christians concerned for soul-winning in Asia: Paul Fuller and his wife Cris, together with their children, are nowon furlough here in the U.S.A. after a very thrilling term of service in Thailand. During the past two years, Chiangmai Bible Institute--the only college-level training program of the Christian Churches (Churches of Christ) in all of mainland South East Asia--has been established. This is a tremendously vital step in the strategy of multiplying Asian Christian leaders to spread the Gospel throughout Asia. We want to tram Asian leaders who will be able to do everything which American missionaries have had to do for them. The fields are too vast for American missionaries to be able to do everything. Also, political barriers in Asia--such as the "Bamboo Curtain" and the Jungle Curtain are so complex that American missionaries need to be in TEAMWORK with a mighty army of Asian Christian missionaries in order to get the Gospel through to places like Communist China, Laos, Vietnam, and also Burma and Northeast India. We want to ask YOU to participate with us daily through your prayer-support and through your financial support. Paul Fuller is available to speak to churches, missionary rallies. Faith Promise rallies, and other meetings during the coming months. 'The Fuller family plan to return to Thailand about__J.uly JL_1978. Also available to speak are the Doug Umbanhowar family, who are based in Lansing, Michigan for their furlough. The Umbanhowars have likewise had a vital part in the launching of Chiangmai Bible Institute in Thailand, and plan to return to Thailand about June 20_,__1_97.8. Chiangmai Bible Institute has been launched; the building 13 being completed. Praise the Lordl NOW we need to work harder than ever before to train hundreds of Asian Christian leaders. Monthly support for Chiangmai Bible DOUBLED Key Christian leaders are wanting to come from Burma and Thailand to study. But funds for operation of C.B.I, need to be doubled if these leaders are come. Teaching materials, furnishings, scholarships for students, travel expenses for teams going- on evangelistic trips into the villages. Bibles in the Asian languagesall these need further support. $4.^X100.00_.per month of additional support is needed, Would you work with us to provide this for the cause of Christ in Asia. In your giving for this coming year, would you plan--with God's help--to work with us to provide these additional needs that the Gospel might be further spread in Asia?
