BasicFacts
PorcineEpidemicDiarrhea(PED)isanemergingswinediseaseintheUnitedStatesthatwas
firstconfirmedintheUSinMay2013.CaseshavebeenidentifiedinNYand24otherstates.
PEDiscausedbyaCoronavirusandishighlyinfectioustoswine.Thevirusisshedinlarge
quantitiesandtheinfectiousdoseisverysmallsocleanlinessiscritical.
PEDonlyinfectsswine.Itisnotinfectioustopeopleorotheranimals.
WhenaherdisfirstexposedtoPEDtheprimaryclinicalsignisseverediarrheainpigsofall
ages.
ThevirusisspreadbyingestionoffecescontainingthePEDvirus.Thesourcesforinfected
fecesincludepigs,trucks,bootsandotherfomites.
Theincubationperiodis12to24hoursandthevirusisshedfor710days.
PEDcankill100%ofpigletslessthan10daysold.Pigsolderthan10daysareexpectedto
recover
Pigletsborntorecoveredsowsareprotectedbyantibodiesinthecolostrumwhilenursing.
Theymaybecomesusceptibleafterweaning.
Strictbiosecurityisthebestcontrolmeasuretokeepitoutofafarm.
Ifitalreadyisonafarmtreatmentissupportivetherapytoaddressdehydration.Youcan
consultwithyourveterinarianregardingadditionalcontrolmeasures.
GuidanceforExhibitors
Ifyouarepurchasingfeederpigsforyourprojectmakesureyouknowwheretheyare
comingfrom.Iftheyrefromoutofstateasktoseethecertificateofveterinaryinspection.
Swinegoingtofairsmustbeaccompaniedbyacertificateofveterinaryinspection.This
inspectionmayoccurwellbeforethefairandyourpigsmaybecomeillafterthisexam.
Examineyourpigscloselybeforetakingthemtothefair.
Arectaltemperatureisrecommendedpriortomovement.Thenormaltemperatureis101.5
to102.5degrees.Iftemperatureiselevateddotherightthingandleavetheanimalhome.
(Inhotweatherthetemperaturemaybeelevated.Coolthepigdownandretakein15
minutes.)
Ifanyofyourpigshavediarrhea,nopigsfromyourfarmshouldgotothefair.

Makesureyourshowboxandequipmentiscleanedanddisinfectedpriortogoingtothefair.
Allorganicmaterialmustberemovedpriortodisinfection.Donotshareanyequipment
withotherexhibitors.
Whileatthefairavoidunnecessarycontactwithotherswineandotherexhibitors
equipment.
Keepyourpensclean.Minimizethetrackingofmanurefromyourpenstootherareas.Keep
yourclothingandfootwearclean.
Ifyourpigsbecomesickduringthefairimmediatelynotifytheswinesuperintendentand
stateveterinarian.
Leftoverfeedandbeddingandmaterialsuchasroughcutlumberaredifficultorimpossible
tocleananddisinfect.Itisrecommendedthesebediscardedatthefairsobringonlywhat
youneed.
Isolateallpigsafterreturninghomeforatleast2weeks.Observepigscloselyduringthis
periodandconsultaveterinarianifanybecomesick.
Cleananddisinfectallequipment,clothing,shoesandtrailers.
Carefortheisolatedpigslast,afterbeingincontactwithotherpigsonthefarm.Makesure
nothingfromtheisolatedpigscomesincontactwiththeresidentpigs.Ideallydedicated
equipmentandprotectiveclothingshouldbeusedforhandlingtheisolatedpigs.

GuidanceforPrefairWeighin/TaggingActivities
Itisrecommendedthatwhereverpossibleprefairweighinswhereallthepigsaretakentoa
centrallocationbeavoided.
Iftheweighinisheldaneffortshouldbemadetoavoiddirectcontactbetweenswinefrom
differentfarms.Ifpossibletheswineshouldremainonthetransportvehicles.
Weighinstaffshouldutilizegoodbiosecuritypracticeswhenhandlingpigs.Ifitisnecessary
toentervehiclesprotectiveclothingshouldbeusedandchangedbetweenuses.Disposable
glovesorhandsanitizershouldbeutilizedforstaffhavingdirectcontactwithpigs.
Taggingequipmentshouldbedisinfectedbetweenuses.Ideally2or3setsofpliersshould
beutilizedsoplierscanrotatedthroughadisinfectantbath.
GuidanceforFairs
Allfacilitiesholdinganimalsarerequiredtobecleanedanddisinfectedpriortothefair.
Anisolationareaforsickanimalshouldbeestablished.Thisareashouldbeutilizedifsick
animalscannotbeimmediatelyremovedfromthefairgrounds.Thisareashouldbeaway
fromthegeneralexhibittrafficandotheranimals.Disposablecoverallsandbootsshouldbe
utilizedaswellasahandwashstationorhandsanitizer.

Swineshouldbeobservedatcheckinbytheveterinarianoranimalhealthinspectorpriorto
unloadingifpossible.Therequiredcertificatesofveterinaryinspectionwillbereviewedat
thistime.Ifsickpigsareobservedtheyideallyshouldnotbeunloadedandimmediately
removedfromthefairgrounds.Ifthatisnotpossibletheyshouldbemovedtotheisolation
area.Theveterinarianwilldetermineiftheentireloadmustberemovedfromthegrounds.
Theswinesuperintendentandveterinarian/animalhealthinspectorshouldchecktheexhibit
onaregularbasisforsickpigs.Youshouldhaveathermometeravailabletocheck
temperaturesifnecessary.Theveterinarianshouldbeimmediatelynotifiedifasickpigis
observed.Thepigshouldbemovedtoisolationiftheveterinaryexamisgoingtobe
delayed.
Allpensmustbethoroughlycleanedanddisinfectedbetweenexhibitsorafterasickpigis
removed.Apenthatheldasickpigshouldnotbereusedduringthefair.Anywalkways,
bathstallsandscalesusedbysuspectpigsmustbecleanedanddisinfected.
Whencleaninganddisinfectionarenecessary,followthesesteps:
1. Dryclean:Removeasmuchsoiledmaterialaspossiblewithshovelandbroom.Avoid
generatingcloudsofdust(lightlysprayareawithwaterifnecessarytokeepdusttoa
minimum).Disposeofsoiledmaterialsinawaythatdoesntexposeotherswine.
2. Wetclean:Usehotwateranddetergenttoremoveasmuchorganicmaterialaspossible.
Avoidusinglargequantitiesofwaterthatrunintootherpens.
3. Rinse:Again,avoidusingtoomuchwater.
4. Disinfect:ChemicalssuchasVirkon,TekTrol,OneStroke,andCloroxwillallworkagainst
PEDv.Followthelabelinstructionsexactly.Usingmorethanthelabelinstructsis
counterproductiveandpossiblyillegal.WhenusingClorox,rememberthatbleachis
quicklydeactivatedbyorganicmaterial,sothoroughcleaningisveryimportant.
5. Allowtheareatodryout.
Ifasickpigisremovedfromapen,theneighboringpigsshouldremaininplaceunless
removedtogohomeortoslaughter.Thesepigsshouldbecloselyobserved.
Theshowareashouldbekeptcleanduringtheshowsandcleanedanddisinfectedbetween
shows.
Donotuseapressurewasheronanimalsorequipment.
Itisrecommendedthatfairsonlyholdmarketclassorauctionclassswineshowswhere
pigsareslaughteredaftertheshowanddonotreturnhome.Breedingswineclassesare
discouraged.
Itisrecommendedthatsowwithlitterexhibitsbeavoided.
GuidanceforVeterinarians
IfPEDisobservedorsuspectedonafarm,acertificateofveterinaryinspectionshouldnot
beissuedforanyswinefromthatfarm
Thepracticeofinspectingswineondesignatedfairexamdaysonnumerousfarmsthesame
dayshouldbereconsidered.Ifyouaregoingtoproceedwithfairexamdays,pleasepay
closeattentiontobiosecuritymeasuresbetweenanimalsandfarms.
