Summary of the Lesson Plan: This social studies lesson is for 2nd grade students to learn about the important events or customs celebrated on holidays (Fourth of July). This lesson will be completed using Apple Pie 4 th of July by Janet S Wong, as a read aloud. C. Basic Information: (3 bullet points) Grade Level: 2 grade Time to Complete this Lesson: Approximately 50 minutes Groupings: Whole group discussion, independent work for assessment D. Materials: Apple Pie 4 th of July by Janet S Wong Post-its Pencil Paper

F. Vocabulary parade a festive event in which people or vehicles pass by spectators chow mein a Chinese dish made with noodles event- something that happens G. Procedure: 1. Explain to the class that they will be making text to self-connections during the read aloud when prompted (read aloud Apple Pie 4th of July by Janet S Wong 2. Call students attention to write a text to self- connection on their post-its after reading the following pages. (p. 3, 14, 21) 3. Identify & discuss some of the traditions discussed in the story a. Have students share some of the connections they make during the read aloud

4. Introduce vocabulary (parade, chow mein, event) H. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? I will have the students complete a ticket out the door with their answers to list of questions on the board. (see attached) Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. Students must correctly tell why/what important events, people and/or customs are marked by the holiday (Fourth of July) in the story. I. Closure: Brief discussion about why and what other important events, people and/or customs are marked by holidays.
Write the following questions on the board for ticket out the door assessment 1. What event did Jennifer want to attend rather than work in the store? 2. What did Jennifer have to eat for lunch? 3. What did Jennifer and her parents do after they closed the store?
