Fundraiser Results!
Dandy Snow Lion Events (Nuzla Izmirli and Leah
Jade Snow) held their frst annual masquerade party last
month. Te event was a full fundraiser with many donat-
ing their time and energy, to not only bring an amazing
event to the Kootenays, but to also raise funds for our lo-
cal Nelson SPCA. We are pleased to announce that the
event raised $1297.95!!!
Tere were many amazing DJs
playing both rooms of the Spirit
Bar for the entire evening, and
many a creative mask and cos-
tume in attendance. Tere was
even a prize for the best hand-
made mask, donated from Cow-
ans in Nelson that gave the win-
ner a free annual discount card
for Artist Supplies for further
creative projects.
Music was in both rooms of
the Spirit Bar, with a DJ Battle
between Freddie J (Kelowna /
Fractal Forest renown) & Rob-
bie C (Canmore) on four turn-
tables. Tere also was music
by DJs Lefy (Invermere/Love
GiveR Events/Fractal Forest),

BCAA Launches Annual
Worst Roads Survey
Te British Columbia Automobile Association (BCAA)
is calling on British Columbians to identify the roads they
believe are the most unsafe and in dire need of attention
with its annual Worst Roads survey.
Until May 26, BC motorists, cyclists and pedestrians
can cast a vote for their Worst Road nominee by visiting
the website, bcaa.com/worstroads or the BCAA Facebook
page. Voters can pinpoint the stretch of road they feel is
the worst in BC and specify what infrastructure issue
theyre concerned about. People can vote once per road,
but for as many roads as they wish.
Roads that are jammed with traf c, full of damaging
potholes or so deteriorated that you can barely see the
road markings can be scary for anyone to use, says Ken
Cousin, BCAAs associate vice-president of Road Assist.
By voting, you can draw some attention to those unsafe
or inef cient roads that frustrate you the most.
Last year, 581 stretches of road were identifed by British
Columbians as being some of the provinces most unsafe,
overly congested or deteriorating roads. Westside Road,
the winner for two years in a row, has seen a $6.5 million
investment made by the Ministry of Transportation and
Infrastructure towards improvements such as, realign-
ment, paving and slow-moving vehicle pullout projects.
We recognize that a lot of road work is underway
throughout the province and that improvements take
time, says Cousin. We all have a role to play. BCAA
wants to ensure that drivers have a way to continue to
identify frustrating roads and we ensure this information
is shared with decision makers. As always, we urge British
Columbians to do their part by driving safely and we have
tips on our website to help.
Troughout the campaign, real-time rankings are avail-
able on the voting site which can be accessed at bcaa.com/
worstroads. Once fnal results are verifed, BCAA will
publish the Top 10 Worst Roads List and share complete
survey results with municipalities, the Ministry of Trans-

Who would have thought that three
avid gardeners would start one of the
most successful festivals in Nelson?
But thats exactly what happened
when Glyn Violini, Lorelie Roll and
businesswoman Catherine Cardinal
set their plants out on a few tables on
Hall Street in 2002 and invited other
growers to join in. Tis colorful and
lively event draws hundreds of gar-
deners, from all walks of life, for a fve
hour shopping spree, rain or shine.
Te 13th Annual Nelson Garden
Festival is set to run on Saturday May
10. Te West Kootenay EcoSociety
has taken the Garden Festival under
its wings, and Markets Director Jesse
R. Woodward is excited to
take on the challenge. When
the Garden Festival organiz-
ers came to me and asked if
I would take on the manage-
ment of this market I felt like
it was a perfect ft due to all
of the other market organiza-
tion that I already do. Wood-
ward is in his third year man-
aging the West Kootenay
EcoSocietys Cottonwood
Community Market, Nelson
Downtown Local Market,
and the Friday Night Market
Fest.
More than 50 vendors and
community groups will be
on hand with perennials,
annuals, vegetable starts,
trees, furniture, fowers just
about everything a gardener
needs to get started or add
to an already great endeavor.

coming! If you like to garden
this market should not be

We always hold it on Mothers Day
weekend so you can get something for
Moms garden as well as your own,
says Violini, who is still involved in
organization of the Nelson Garden
Festival. Violini says she is impressed,
but not surprised, that the festival
has become so successful. We knew
from the response at the very frst fes-
tival. Tis is a community that wants
to support local agriculture and local
growers. Gardeners know that local-
ly adapted seeds and plants will be
healthier and more vigorous.
Returning for their third year, the
boisterous and lively belly-dancing
group, Shimmy Mob, will perform at
11 am and 12 pm in front of the Koo-
tenay Food Coop. Tey are raising
awareness and funds for womens and
childrens shelters.
Te Nelson Garden Festival runs
from 10 am to 3 pm. Te streets will
be closed on the 200 block of Baker
and Kootenay Streets, in front of the
Bank of Montreal, from 7 am until
4 pm. Late night Nelsonites are re-
minded to move their parked cars
from the festival blocks on Koote-
nay and Baker Friday night to avoid
problems in set up on Saturday. Park-
ing for the festival is available at the
city parkade next to the Hume Hotel.

Get Involved In Preparing Te
Harvest!
Te Harvest Rescue program of the Nelson Food Cup-
board is beginning early this year. We had an excellent
harvest in 2013 with 7990 pounds of fruit gleaned by vol-
unteers and 2556 pounds of fruit and vegetables donated
from markets and fruit stands. Tank you volunteers and
fruit tree owners.
Tis season, not only will we be picking and gleaning
the harvest but growing and gardening throughout the
Nelson region. We are looking for garden gnomes, volun-
teers interested in gardening, gleaning and learning about
growing food in our region.
We are also seeking underutilized gardens or spaces to help
grow produce. Each potential space requires a caretaker/
owner that is responsible for it while the gnomes are away.
Join us in working to grow food and support local farms
and gardens.

Nelson Choral Society & LVR Jazz Band will be per-

Te Nelson Choral Society departs from its usual clas-
sical repertoire to embrace jazz at this Mothers Day con-
cert. Sharing the program are the LV Rogers Jazz Band,
under director Tim Bullen, and Cottonwood Singers. Te
band will showcase pieces it has been preparing for the
upcoming MusicFest national competition in Vancouver.
Te choirs featured selection is A Little Jazz Mass by
Bob Chilcott, one of the busiest and most popular choral
composers and conductors in Britain today. Tis sacred
Latin mass, gloriously brought into the jazz idiom, will be
accompanied by Doug Stephenson on bass, Steven Parish
on drums and Christoph Martens on piano. It embraces a
variety of jazz styles alternately swinging, grooving, sit-
ting back, humming along and drawing inspiration from
the blues. Bring your mother, and enjoy.

Heinz Stalder, 79, died peacefully in the company of his be-
loved wife Sylvia on Sunday, April 27, 2014. Heinz is survived by
his wife Sylvia, his sons Kurt and Urs, and Sylvias children Jrg,
Lea and Ronald with families.
Heinz lef Switzerland twenty-one years ago when he and Sylvia
came to live in the Kootenays. He loved fshing, walking, photog-
raphy and the wonderful friends he and Sylvia made in the area.
Te family wishes to thank all the friends and neighbours who
ofered support during this dif cult time. We would also like to
express our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Malpass, Dr. Lisa and all the
staf at the Nelson Hospital for compassionate care they extended
to Heinz and their kindness to Sylvia.
Tere will be a memorial at a later date.

Paul William
Woolgar
October 31, 1931 ~ April 26, 2014
Paul was born in Collingwood,
Ontario on October 31, 1931
to William & Hilda Woolgar. The
family moved to the United States
in 1934. Paul s rst marriage was
to N.C. Woodworth (Woolgar) from
the United States. On September
15, 1961 he re-married. He and his
second wife, Helen Marie Andersen of Spokane, Washington moved to
Kaslo in 1991 upon his retirement.
Paul was an electro-mechanical, technical and construction electrician
for 35 years for the Boeing Company of Seattle Way in Washington state.
He also served as a medic in the Army of the United States from July
1951 to July 1957. When visiting the doctors ofce, Paul always enjoyed
a lively conversation and sharing his medical experiences. Paul was in-
terested in anything electrical and his home was wired like a Boeing
747! He had a photographic memory and always enjoyed very technical
conversations. Being a true Halloween baby, he especially enjoyed this
particular day, each and every year dressing up at his home to give out
treats to the kids.
Helen predeceased Paul on October 5th, 2007 due to a car accident in
Balfour, BC. Paul is survived by his sister Joan (Don) Kabel of East Aurora,
NY, a brother Richard Woolgar in New York state; 6 children David Wool-
gar from Grand Prairie, Texas, Christopher & Jaime Woolgar from Hornell,
NY, Richard Woolgar from Almond, NY, Faye Wickwire from Tacoma, Wa
and Laurel Turner-Studley, from Almond, NY. There are also a number of
grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Sincere thanks to the emergency nurses at the Victorian Health Centre
in Kaslo. Special thanks to Doctors Magier and Burkholder, the nurses,
staff and the volunteer New Denver Hospice Society for all the special
care and compassion given to Paul during his sudden and short illness.
You are all truly amazing and your special kindness to Paul will never be
forgotten. Thank you again ~ Jill Braley, Kaslo
A graveside service was held on Wednesday April 30 at the Kaslo upper
cemetery. Paul was laid to rest beside his Helen.

The Parcel Tax Assessment Roll for the Year 2014 is
available for inspection at the Salmo Village Offce at 423
Davies Avenue from Monday to Friday during the hours
of 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
A person who owns a property included on the Parcel Tax
Assessment Roll may request that the Roll be amended on
one or more of the following grounds:
a) there is an omission respecting a name or address on
the Parcel Tax Roll;
b) there is an error or omission respecting the inclusion of
a property;
c) an exemption has been improperly allowed or
disallowed.
A request that the Parcel Tax Assessment Roll be

Immunization: Your Best Shot
Te current measles outbreak in parts of our province is
a powerful reminder of the importance of immunization.
When immunization rates drop, whole communities can
be at risk.
An immunization rate of 95 per cent is needed to help
protect vulnerable people in the community. If the ma-
jority of people are vaccinated for a disease, it becomes
harder for the disease to spread from person to person.
When people stop immunizing diseases come back. Tis
puts our more vulnerable citizens at risk including young
children, seniors, and people with certain medical condi-
tions or weakened immune systems.
In the last 50 years, immunization has saved more lives
in Canada than any other health intervention. April 26 to
May 3 is National Immunization Awareness Week. Tis
years theme Vaccination: Your Best Shot is an important
reminder that immunization is the best protection against
many serious diseases.
Dr. Sue Pollock, Medical Health Of cer, reminds us
that we all have an important role to play in preventing
the spread of vaccine preventable diseases like measles,
mumps, and whooping cough.
Many of todays parents have not seen such diseases
in their lifetimes; thanks to very successful immunization
programs. Some people dont realize just how dangerous
these diseases can be, added Dr. Pollock. Measles and
chickenpox viruses can lead to serious complications like
pneumonia and encephalitis (brain swelling). Pertussis
(whooping cough) can cause seizures and brain damage
in babies and mumps infection can result in deafness. Te
risk of having a serious side efect from a vaccine is very
small. Te benefts of vaccination far outweigh the risks.
Sorting fact from fction is not easy, but its important
to have correct information. Dr. Pollock suggests parents
make sure they get immunization information from cred-
ible sources such as public health nurses, family phys-
icians, and reliable websites like ImmunizeBC (www.im-
munizeBC.ca).

CLEO is approximately 1 year and 9 months
old. She is a brindle spayed mastif cross that
was was surrendered with her housemate
Guido on March 21, 2014 to the Trail
Regional BCSPCA. Guido has since found his
forever home, so Cleo is hoping for the same
for herself.
Cleo is very friendly and loves attention from
people. She needs a home free of children
and cats as she can be jealous. She does well
with other submissive dogs who dont mind
her rough play.
She sufers from separation anxiety and
was crate trained in her last home, so we
recommend that she continues to have
a crate in her new home, as she can be
destructive and vocal when left alone.
She does know her basic commands, but
we recommend a refresher in obedience
training, which will help create a bond with
her new guardian.

80th Kootenay Festival Of Te Arts
To Send 8 Candidates To Provincials
Te 2014 Kootenay Festival of the Arts fnished its
successful 80th year afer two weeks of adjudicated per-
formances and highlights concerts at the Capitol Teatre
this month. Kootenay Festival of the Arts is an adjudi-
cated performing arts festival sponsored by the Nelson
Music Festival Association, a nonproft society managed
by a volunteer executive board from the West Kootenays.
Te festival provides a showcase for young people in the
Kootenay area to demonstrate their talent in categories
of piano, vocal and choral arts, strings and guitar, speech
and dramatic arts, and dance.
Te purpose of the local festival is to bring in excellent
adjudicators for each discipline to work with students.
Adjudicators nominate candidates whom they feel have
reached a standard of profciency in their respected disci-
pline, to the provincial festival. Performing Arts BC, an
association of 34 regional festivals, hosts the provincial
fnals where the candidates have the opportunity to be
selected for the National Festival. Performing Arts BC is
one of the oldest festival traditions in British Columbia
and its goals have been to inspire, educate, evaluate and
promote regional students in the performing arts disci-
plines of dance, music and theatre.
Alternating between Nelson and Trail, this years Koo-
tenay Festival adjudicators in Nelson nominated eight
fnalists for the Performing Arts BC Provincial Festival
in Penticton, to be held in June. Adjudicators also nom-
inated 11 observers, who together with the fnalists, will
participate in workshops, master classes, seminars and
concerts in all disciplines including dance, piano, speech
and dramatic arts, voice and strings. More than 400 per-
forming young artists participated in this years festival in
Nelson, 66 of those received cash awards.
Te eight nominated candidates chosen by the respect-
ed festival discipline adjudicators to represent the West
Kootenays at the Provincials this year in Penticton are:
Alexis Brooks of Penticton, senior modern dance; Beth-
any Johnson of Rossland, junior stage dance; Alexandra
Deane of Nelson, junior piano; Espoir Segbeaya of Nel-
son, senior speech and dramatic arts; Sebastian Bodine
of Nelson, intermediate speech and dramatic arts; Galen
Boulager of Nelson, intermediate classical voice; Michael
Marsland of Nelson, intermediate musical theatre; Isabel
McAleer of Nelson, junior classical voice.

Fourth and Final Death Cafe
Nelsons Fourth and Final Death Cafe will take place on
Tuesday, May 13 at the Vienna Cafe, from 7 to 9 pm. Were
honoured to have as our main speaker Dr. Trevor Janz
who will present his thoughts on death and dying, and
present specifc questions for small group discussions.
Tere will be a question and answer session with him to-

a 15 minute break), small group discussions will continue
on the theme of life and living. Time will be allotted at
the end of the evening. IF, in the autumn the interest is
present for a similar discussion group to continue, these
related themes can be dealt with in a broader, more en-
compassing spectrum at another venue. Since there is
only very limited space (maximum 45 participants), you

Shoreline Restoration Report
Tank you to the 35 volunteers who came out on Satur-
day, April 26, to help restore a section of the Nelson Dog
Park shoreline with over 50 native shrubs and trees.
Tis event was coordinated by the Central Kootenay In-
vasive Plant Committee (CKIPC) and the Friends of Koo-
tenay Lake in collaboration with the City of Nelson and was
made possible with support from community volunteers in-
cluding, Treebear Native Plants, Kootenay Native Plant So-
ciety, the Youth Naturalists and the Prestige Lakeside Resort.
Invasive species have been introduced to Canada in-
tentionally and accidentally, and can have a variety of
negative impacts. Tese introduced, non-native species
establish and spread successfully due to a lack of natural
predators and controls. Invasive species are highly com-
petitive and have the ability to out-compete native plant
and animal species, impacting fragile native species and
ecosystems, such as shoreline ecosystems along Kootenay
Lake, says CKIPC Executive Director Crystal Klym.
CKIPC and FOKL gratefully acknowledges the support
of the Columbia Basin Trust and Mountain Equipment Co-
Op in providing the funding to make this event possible.
MLA Michelle Mungalls
Accessible Community Of ce
On April 24 nearly 100 people celebrated accessible
community services with MLA Michelle Mungall at the
Grand Opening of her new, street level community of ce.
Local business owners, frontline service providers
and community members were on hand to tour the new
space, learn about the services the MLAs of ce ofers and
discuss local issues. Te new of ce is located at 433 Baker
St in Nelson, and provides a barrier free location for con-
stituents to access the services Mungalls of ce provides.
I am very pleased that Michelle has moved to this great
new space said local senior Allan Collier at the event. It
makes it really easy for moms with strollers or people like
me who have trouble getting up stairs.
During the election, people told me that my old loca-
tion was dif cult for them to access, says Mungall. Ive
heard that concern and have moved to a location that is
accessible and more visible for all constituents.
Mungalls community of ce is open in Nelson 10 to 4
Monday to Tursday. She also operates mobile of ces in
Creston, Salmo and Kaslo one day a month, and constitu-
