Math 142 Communication Assignment #2 (50 Points) Spring 2014

ASSIGNMENT:
For this assignment you are asked to complete the workout problem detailed below.
Your grade will be based on accuracy, execution, completeness, organization, neatness
and your ability to communicate your understanding of course material (see the grading
rubric below for more details).

This assignment is intended to better prepare you to properly communicate your work on
problems similar to those you will see on graded reviews. You may handwrite or type
any part of this assignment, ensuring that all work is both neat and professional.

PROBLEM:
Consider the solid of revolution formed by rotating the region bounded by the function
()

and the lines , , and around the -axis.

a) Graph the 2-dimensional area that is being revolved around the -axis.

b) Use one of the following slicing methods to solve for the volume of the solid of
revolution: 1) Disks 2) Washers 3) Cylindrical Shells. Define the volume of a
generic slice, and then develop an expression that adds a finite number of slices
together to estimate the total volume. Take the limit as the number of slices
approaches infinity and solve for the true volume of the solid.

c) Explain why you chose the method you used to find the volume. Would either of
the other two methods be an appropriate method to find the volume? Why or why
not?
