It takes a special person to be a CASA Volunteer.
Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) speak for children in
court, in an efort to ensure that all children have a right to live
in a safe, healthy and secure environment. You might be one of
those people.
CASA is one of the best programs in Humboldt County, and our
speaker this month has a unique perspective on the program.
Shes worked at CASA of Humboldt since last August as the
ofce manager and development assistant, a job she really
loves due to the great work that CASA does with foster children
and the friendliness of the staf. Before working for CASA she
worked as the special education aide at a school; as a caregiver
for an older disabled woman; and at several non-proft organi-
zations. Jennifer trained to be a CASA Advocate in January, and
spent time each weekend with a foster child.
Join us for lunch, and what is sure to be an inspiring discussion.

As usual, when it comes to writing these newsletters, I struggle with the topic, because I
dont want to give you fuf. My purpose has been to share ideas that would provoke you in a
positive way to move you to action in the community setting. We recently held our Member-
ship Tea, which was a complete success despite the loss of electricity at Esthers home. Esther
unhesitatingly found a way to start the generator and the event went on without any other
hitches. Had there been no generator, we still would have had a special time together,
drinking water and eating cold appetizers and desserts, because we dont let anything stop us
from our goals! I dont know if it was a record, but we had three new members enroll, one
visitor changed parties, and we raised a good amount of money in the process. By all
accounts, as you will read in our newsletter, a great time was had by all.
The very next weekend, we found ourselves immersed in the Rhody Parade. What a hoot! We
used Carol Del Biaggios red truck, which she and Henry furnished with a bale of hay. We kept
slipping and sliding of the bale as we laughed and greeted as many people as possible along
the route. Our goal was to be positive, open, welcoming as we deliberately looked into the
eyes of parade attendees. We wanted to leave a distinct impression of who we are, rather
than who people think we are.
That being said, we have some opportunities ahead where we can make a diference politi-
cally and socially, statewide, district-wide, and locally. Statewide: we have a Voter I.D.
initiative for which were collecting signatures. Even Mexico has Voter ID Laws. Do I make
my case? Why is it such a disdainful thing in some circles to require this? I guess they like
Uncle Gus to continue to vote posthumously.... As an aside, my mother didnt drive a day in
her life, but she took the personal responsibility to make sure she had a California I.D. The act
did not harm, embarrass, or shame her in any way; however, it did show she was willing to be
part of the process of being a viable citizen.
Weve also featured state candidates who have visited us here on the north coast, like Matt
Heath, who is running for the State Assembly. He is the only Republican running and has
visited us at least three times that I know of: HRWF luncheon, Republican of the Year dinner
and, most recently, with our Young Republicans group. He does recognize that we in
Humboldt County are part of the District he will be serving. Please give him your thoughtful
vote whether you vote by absentee or at the polls. If you didnt exercise your right to vote
during the last election go-around, remember that John Fullerton lost by only 85 votes to an
extremely liberal candidate. We need Matts conservative views heard in Sacramento.
Dont forget to join us on May 22nd at the Elks Lodge when our special speaker will be
Jennifer DaParma from CASA.

Official CFRW Proposition Positions
There are two measures for the upcoming primary election in June, Props 41 and 42. Both propositions were placed
on the ballot by the Legislature. The CFRW Voting Body has voted to OPPOSE Prop 41 and SUPPORT Prop 42.
After extensive research and analysis, the CFRW has come out
against Prop 41. Prop 41 is titled the Veterans Housing and Homeless
Prevention Bond Act. Taken at face value, this would seem like a proposition
we should support. But upon further review and analysis, Prop 41 does little
to fx the homeless veteran problem and actually does more harm to
veterans looking to purchase homes.
Prop 41 would take $600 million away from the CalVet program, a
$900 million bond program passed by voters in 2008, and instead uses that
money to build multi-family, low-income housing for homeless vets.
The original CalVet program helped vets secure loans for purchasing
property, homes, and farms. This new prop is leaving only $300 million for
those vets and, instead, using $600 million in bond money to support
approximately 19,000 homeless vets in the state of California. California has
almost 2 million vets living here, yet we are shifting 2/3rds of already-
approved bond money to help 1% of vets in the state. We believe that the
homeless vets should be helped- with a hand up, not a hand out.
Prop 41 would build all new multi-family, low-income housing, which is why
labor unions are big supporters of the bill. But Prop 41 would also create
a new tax liability for Californians, averaging at least $50 million
annually in new costs over the next 15 years.
Prop 41 would also create new bureaucracies for its implementa-
tion, many of these overlapping with already established state and
federal programs for our homeless vets. This creates more waste and
unnecessary spending when this bond money could be better spent to help
our vets.
We believe that our vets deserve creative solutions. A robust economy and
afordable, competitive college programs would help Californian veterans.
How about tax credits for businesses that employ vets? Or reworking the
CalVet program for better loan options for vets to purchase property
themselves.
Prop 41 is the easy answer, not the right answer. We OPPOSE Prop 41!
By contrast, Prop 42 is a straightforward bill. The CFRW Voting Body
voted to SUPPORT Prop 42. Prop 42 is called the California Compliance of
Local Agencies with Public Records Act. It would require that all local
agencies comply with the California Public Records Act (CPRA) and the
Brown Act. A good question would be: why werent localities already
complying with these important transparency acts? Prop 42 would
guarantee a private citizens right to open, public records and to attend
public meetings. This could save the state millions of dollars by eliminating
the requirement that the state reimburse local agencies for compliance with
these laws. Now the local agencies must comply with these transparency
laws and will be incentivized to keep costs down since the state will no
longer reimburse costs. In an increasingly paperless world, most local
agencies should make their records available online to keep costs low and
transparency high. We SUPPORT Prop 42!

CFRWs Northern Division is pleased to host the
2014 Northern Division
Spring Conference
Spring Fling into Action
Held at the Red Lion Woodlake Resort and Conference Center
in Sacramento May 16th and 17th.
Members of Humboldt RWF, Fort Bragg RWF, Lake County RWF, Del
Norte RWF and Ukiah RWF are busy preparing for a wonderful weekend
set in a beautiful new venue. In fact, we are excited to be the host Region
for an entirely new conference experience. The hotel venue itself is more
resort than conference room feeling, so it lends itself beautifully to our
Candidate Blender Saturday evening in the large fountained courtyard,
which will be sectioned of for our own private use. Here you will get an
opportunity to speak in small groups with the candidates as they rotate
amongst the tables, and speak about the issues that you want answered.
Immediately following the Blender will be an al fresco dinner bufet with
musical entertainment by Susan Horst and Yvonne Fuller.
Be sure to bring your casual clothes so you can relax and enjoy the beautiful
California sunshine. Saturday evening is all about comfort and networking.
You might even want to take a spin on one of the paddle boats available in
the manmade lake before strolling over to the evening activities! Even our
break before lunch will be in the outdoor gazebo for anyone interested in
mingling.
Full details on the all new lineup will be available in the ofcial Call to
Conference on the Northern Division website. If you think all conferences
are the same, you need to wipe that idea right out of your mind and join us
in Sacramento. All new venue, all new format and all new conference
speakers.
Remember, Conference online registration deadline is Friday, May
9th. Get in touch with Annette if you'd like to go.

GLUTEN-FREE CORNER
KEET-TV NEEDS YOUR HELP TODAY !
KEET needs 2,200 new members by June 30th or our very own public
broadcasting station may be forced to go of the air! If KEET goes of the air,
we will be losing a tremendous source of commercial-free news, entertain-
ment, local history, art, music, politics and concerts.
Here is the problem: one third of KEET S annual budget comes from the
Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). In exchange for this funding, the
CPB requires every public broadcasting station to raise $800,000 annually.
While this amount is easy for stations in San Francisco or New York, it is an
extremely challenging target for small stations like KEET. Until this year, CPB
has granted a waiver to these small stations with no strings attached.
However, to receive a waiver this year, CPB is requiring KEET to raise more
funds than ever before and to signifcantly increase its membership.
KEET s goal is to gain a total of 2,200 new members by June 30th. We can t
do this without your help. Currently only 4 percent of KEET s viewers are
members. So if you watch any of KEET s programming, whether it s the PBS
news hour, Doc Martin, the acclaimed Downton Abbey or local election
candidate debates or any other of its diverse variety of shows---and haven t
joined, now is the time! The truth is, if CPB s requirements are not met, KEET
may be forced to go of the air.
KEET is very proud of its members, who contribute an average of $6 per
television household versus a national public broadcasting average of $1.92!
For as little as $30, you can become a member of KEET, online at
SUPPORT-KEET or by calling 445-0813.
IF YOU ARE A VIEWER BUT NOT A MEMBER, NOW IS THE TIME TO GIVE BACK IN
THIS HOUR OF NEED! THANK YOU
Welcome to Minnie's gluten-freecorner. Annette and Jane
encouraged me to do this, they think I know a little on the subject.
I've been on the G/F bandwagon 2 years, and have been reading
health, nutrition and related information for over 30 years.
My personal choice to go G/F started with reading Wheat Bellyby
William Davis, M.D., a cardiologist. This book is a great starting place.
When you understand the why, the journey to G/F is a lot more fun.
This is not about giving up your favorites. It is about creating and
discovering new favorites. And you might even lose a little weight,
feel better and sleep better.
G/F things I like: Mary's Gone Crackers, comes in three favors, Late
Julycorn chips @ Costco, Quinoa Pasta by Andean Dream. Chia seeds
are G/F, very healthy and fun to use.
Great article on Chia seeds on drdavidwilliams.com
