Dr. 5ean +atson is a (ursing Professor at the university of Colorado Denver and "nschut2 Medical Center. +atson is very passionate about human care as it is shown throughout her boo. Dr. 5ean +atson has accomplished and is still accomplishing many things in her life. 6rom becoming a professor to establishing her own care science institute she has done it all. I admire her wor and the effort she puts into it. +atson was born during the $384s in a small town called the "ppalachian Mountains of +est Virginia. !he graduated from the 9ewis :ale !chool of (ursing in $3;$) and then continued her nursing studies at the <niversity of Colorado at Boulder. !he later then earned her bachelor=s degree in $3;8) a Master=s degree in psychiatric and mental health nursing in $3;;) and a Ph.D. in educational psychology and counseling in $3>?. "ccording to her bio she served as Dean of (ursing at the <niversity *ealth !ciences Center and was the President of the (ational 9eague for nursing then followed of the "merican "cademy of (ursing. The boos she had written included (ursing7 The Philosophy and !cience of Caring) 'evised #dition) which was published in @44A. !he is a professor at the <niversity of Colorado. In addition to this she created the +atson Caring !cience Institute to help spread her nursing theory and ideas. This was a nonprofit foundation in order to deepen and e.tend the caring science theory she has created. +atson has si. honorary degrees) including an Mancha 8 International *onorary Doctorate from the <niversity of Montreal in Buebec) Canada in @44?) and an *onorary Doctor of !ciences in (ursing from the <niversity of Victoria in British Columbia) Canada in @4$4. +atson has wasted no time with getting her theory and ideas out there for people. +atson-s theories and ideas are involved in both nursing and the caring science of it overall. In her new addition she has reflected upon the effects or caring and how it connects to love as the primordial morals based on the philosophy and science of caring practices and healing itself. "long with this +atsons e.plains her thought and nowledge involving the ethic and ethos of universal love in our own personal professional lives. "s +atson e.plains how caring a very important ey in the field of nursing as is it is the central point to this career. In addition she feels that nursing should be centered on caring. Through her core concepts she feel as though 0care1 is a misunderstood concept and should be address to those who need to obtain this ,uality in their woring careers. In her boo +atson goes further into) 0how the human being is defined as a valued person in and of him or herself to be cared for) respected) nurtured) understood and assisted& in general a philosophical view of a person as a fully functional integrated self. *e) human is viewed as greater than and different from) the sum of his or her parts.C In this ,uote she demonstrates that a human=s health includes a high level of overall physical) mental) and social function. The development of efforts that will guide people to the absence of illness would be a general adaptive/maintenance level of daily functions. The more people are caring) active) and have a positive mind set the more liely they are to undergo these illnesses and mae it out alive. Thans to Dr. 5ean +atson and her ideas we have been able to develop improvement in nursing) specifically caring science. Mancha 9 +atson=s nursing process parallels the scientific research process. *er first step she introduces is assessment. This involves observation) identification and review of the problem) and the formulation of a hypothesis. (e.t) the nurse creates a care plan to determine how variables will be e.amined) as well as what data should be collected and how. !tep three is intervention. This is the implementation of the developed plan and includes the collection of the data. 6inally) the nurse conducts an evaluation. This is the e.amination of the data and results of the intervention) and the interpretation of the results. This may lead to an additional hypothesis. Definition of Nursing There are many different definitions to describe what a nurse is. In my own thought I feel a nurse is compassionate) smart) and has very good communication sills. To be a nurse first off you must have a drive for it) being compassionate with patients help built this special bond between the nurse and patient. "long with that they also need to be smart) and I do not mean straight " nerd smart but they have to now their %ob lie the bac of their hand. *aving great communication sills is a very important factor in being a nurse. +hen you put all these ,ualities together this is what defines who a nurse is) what they do) and how well they succeed in their practice. To be a nurse I feel lie they must have a passion for what they do. This creates a stronger bond with the patient maing their e.perience as comfortable and painless as possible. In nursing they witness what people go through) good and bad. To be able to connect and give their support to their patients) it mentally helps them as well as their health. "s they say the happier you are with your life the less stress and problems you will have to endure. Many people Mancha 10 may not appreciate the amount of wor nurses put in but the ones who do are sure to let you now) and along with compassion in the field having a well/rounded mind about your %ob also defines what a nurse is. Being smart is one thing but being smart in a sense where you are e.perienced and master at both boo nowledge and hands on nowledge in this field will really benefit you as a burse. (urses have to be ,uic and on their toes constantly. In all actuality the nurses do more than the doctors. They are the ones caring for the patient) maing sure heDshe had the right about of medication and that there stay at the hospital is as comfortable as possible. There %ob re,uires a lot more wor then what they are given credit for. In my opinion that is pretty sad that people loo up to the doctors but forget that the nurses were the ones who nursed you bac to help. In addition to these nurses must be up to date on the last care procedures as well as how to perform them when needed. 'eading how to do something is one thing) but actually having this hand on e.perience is a whole other playing felid. (urses must be prepped and ready for all that comes their way) whether it is as minor as a scratch or as big as brain surgery. *aving this well rounded nowledge of what is e.pected of them in the field) being able to perform it) and being smart is what contributes to being a nurse %ust as must as communication sills. Communication is ey is the art of nursing. Being able to tal to your patient in a tone that is sensitive to their condition is very important. Coming into a hospital you want to tal to someone who is ind) sensitive) and caring towards your problem. " patients e.perience in a doctor-s office or at a hospital should have that comfort and caring feeling. This is a feeling that nurses should give off on a first impression. (urses have this tone and a indness when they communicate to their patients that sometimes the doctors might not have. Doctors give off this dominate) leader) and informative type of tone) which is very different from a nurse-s tone. "n Mancha 11 e.perience my friend Britney had taled about was when she encountered a rude nurse really open my eyes to the types of nurses and the attitudes they should have. "s she e.plained to me that her grandmother was in the hospital and she had this one nurse who was very unhelpful and rude to the family. The e.perience only made them not want to be there) let alone leave their grandmother is this lady-s care. " family should not have to be put in the position where they are contemplating whether or not they could trust the team left to help their ill family member. If you encounter a nurse who is rude and carefree you thin to yourself) why is heDshe a nurse thenE This is when the society-s e.pectations of what type of person a nurses are come into play. Many people define what a nurse is and what ,ualities it taes to be one is so many different ways. Fne of the ,ualities I feel they should have is compassion. The ne.t is to be smart) not only with the terminology but being able to thin fast in important situations. The last ,uality is communication& this is an important thing to have when it comes to being a nurse. Being able to communicate with your patients that mae them feel lie they can trust) rely) and respect you helps form that bond. *aving a well rounded sense of what a nurse is and what they can bring to the table is ey when choosing a well educated nurse. "lthough this is my perception of what defines a nurse society has its- own opinion when it comes to defining what a nurse is. Societies Definition of Nursing !ociety depicts what we as a whole e.pect or thin when it comes to the types of people) %obs) and ethics. "lthough as a society we have evolved from the %udgmental ways of the past there are still some things that will remain the same or re,uire improvement. "n e.ample would Mancha 12 be in the field of (ursing. !ociety has built up this thought about what gender of people should be as a nurse. (ot only the gender is chosen but the importance of being a nurse in general is %udged. (urses are %ust looed at as hospital slaves. They are un/educated and lac the nowledge that society feels they need. In addition that nurses are looed at in a se.ual way) the 0naughty nurse1 which is very %udgmental and offensive to many in the nursing field. "ll these are some e.amples of what society defines a nurse-s %ob title %ust proves how much society needs to mature in their ethics and morals. Fne thing that stands out when you thin about a nurse is that you e.pect them be a women. This is not only offensive but se.ist as well too many in the nursing field. !ociety as painted this picture in peoples- minds which is that being a nurse is a women-s %ob. That they are not capable of maintaining the responsibly nor the nowledge needed to become a doctor. Thus leading into the gender roles society has set for everyone. Charissa Cordon a Minority (urse +riter states in her article !tructural Ine,uality and Diversity in (ursing that 0This gendered hierarchy of women in subordinate roles emphasi2es male domination and marginali2ation of women in society.1 "s she e.plains that the women receiving these 0subordinate roles1 demonstrate that males have a more dominate role in our society. !ociety has yet again wored its- way into maing women at a lower status in society then men. This leading into what Cordon calls a 0gender hierarchy.1 #,uality not only e.ists today between races still but with gender as well. The way nurses are looed at over all in the eyes of society is not as important as they actual are. The importance in ones %ob is always viewed and %udged differently by many. In this case nursing %ust so happens to be one of those %obs people feel is %ust not as important. That although nursing is a 0good1 %ob it is not a 0great1 %ob and there is something better you can Mancha 13 become. People do not reali2e the importance of what it taes to be a nurse nor do they appreciate and acnowledge the fact that they to now what they are taling about when it comes to health. (urses have to now %ust as much as the doctors now) they go to school and tae the classes needed to fulfill and e.tend their nowledge in the medical field. The only difference between the doctor and nurse is the school) one went to medical school and nurses did not reach as far as an education as a doctor would need to. This does not mean that if you are a nurse you are not smart or reliable when it comes to giving information to a patient. The bond between nurses and their patients go under looed by society-s perception of how important a nurse is in our community. In the article The Value of (urses in the Community by Val :oenbach she e.plains) 0"s part of the nursing community) let us value our e.istence to mae a difference in our patients.1 :oenbach e.plains a ey importance a nurse should be valued when it comes to the roles of nursing. +hat society lacs is difference a nurse can mae in a patient-s life. The nowledge a nurse has can be as beneficial as receiving it from a doctor. The comparison between a doctor and nurse has always been an issue in our society. Fur community depicts doctors as 0:od1 and nurses %ust the 0little angles1 that assist him. The importance of nowledge a nurse may have is over seen because of the title 0nurse1 is not looed at as nowledgeable as a title of a 0doctor.1 Blinded by some of the best and wonderful nurses around our country we become unaware of the greatness a nurse can bring to the table. +hen both doctors and nurses come together they are able to create miracles. !aving lives and caring for others is what both doctors and nurses live for but people forget the hard wor that nurse put in e.tra more than a doctor would. " nurse is there at your side @8D> as for doctors they are %ust around for when something interesting or bad happens. This is where society does not reali2e the amount of importance it is to be a nurse. They mae sure that the patient is receiving all of their Mancha 14 medication at the right amount) time and day they need it. Thus leading into the educational struggle of being a nurse as society once again defines it in a whole other way. In society it has been shown that we do not thin that nurses are as well educated in the %ob field they fall into. (urses in fact are either more educated than normal meet the amount of education needed to reach their potential %ob. Many tend to after they get their first %ob go bac to school and receive a high education later moving them up in their field. (urses do not %ust sit around and tae blood pressure) there is a lot more to their %ob than that. !ociety does not recogni2e nurses- true potential. They may not have as many years in schooling as doctors do but their passion) hands on e.periences) and nowledge they need to now allows them to carry on and assist those in need. (ot only is education being affected but also image of nurses are as well. " nurse-s image is not only dependent on what they wear) but also how they act in and out of the worplace and on the care they provide to their patients. *aving appropriate behavior is best when it comes to interpersonal relationships) collaboration with peers) proper management of patients) and ade, uate mentoring. People in the nursing community now how important it is to support nursing peers to become the nursing image they desire. !ociety has shown nurses to be very good looing women who tend to arouse their patients. (urses- today struggle with their image as they try to change the mind set of our society and the image they portray for it. These are some e.amples of what society defines the %ob title of nursing %ust proves how much society needs to mature in their ethics and morals. "s society depicts what we as a whole e.pect or thin when it comes to people in the nursing career. !ociety has built up this thought Mancha 15 about what gender of people should be as a nurse. In addition nurses are %ust looed at as hospital slaves. They are un/educated and lac the nowledge that society feels they need. The image of a nurse is portrayed as this 0naughty nurse1 in the eyes of society) when really they need to open there eyes to the truth in front of them. "lthough as a society we have evolved from the %udgmental ways of the past there are still some things that will remain the same or re,uire improvement. Issues Nurses Face (urses face many difficulties and hardships in their %ob field. (ot many tae the time to reali2e the issues nurse face every day. "n important issue is the importance of the %ob title 0nurse.1 "lthough many may feel lie this is a good %ob to have there are those who feel lie nurses are low) un/educated and not mentally prepared to be in a hospital. The nurse to patient ratio has become a big issue for nurses as many are not able to care for all of their patients e,ually. During the $344s nurses were not view as academically rounded but rather an image used to promote the women-s involvement in the war. (ot only has that been a problem for nurses but the role they play in the hospital has also affect the nursing community. Many issues over the years have been created to demoni2e the importance of nursing but lie all strong minded people nurse have come together to overcome everything thrown at them. In the woring field nurses have been looed down upon. This includes being bullied by co/worers) doctors) and patients. !ince nurses have been looed down upon other co/wors feel lie they do not need to assist) listen) or even respect nurses. This not only is unfair treatment to nurses but also affects how patients are attending for. 6or e.ample if a nurse is needed advice from the doctor on how to treat or mange a patient and the doctor total disregards the nurse the Mancha 16 patient is being affect due to this disrespectful act. Thans to co/worers lie this they have created rules regarding such matters. These issues still e.ist today and they need to be address in bullying throughout the wor place. Bullying involving the nursing field in a hospital has become an issue for many. (ot only are nurses being bullied by fellow co/worers but also with patients. This is an ongoing issue that has yet to be resolved. In her article she e.plains) CBullying involves overt behaviors) often occurs publicly) and may involve an authority figure and a staff member. Bullying may sometimes lead to physical aggression directed towards the nurse) such as throwing items in the healthcare setting.C This type of acting in the woring field creates tension and maes it difficult for the nurses to wor with. Direct aggressions towards nurses publicly are not mature or should be allowed in the wor place. This type of disrespectful act is the reason why many thin so low of nurses. +hen they are put into a situation and other staff members are behaving in this type of manner it is not only hard for the nurse but it also becomes dangerous along with the high nurse to patient ratios. (urse to patient ratio has also been a problem nurses- still even faces today. "s many people still believe that to be a nurse it doesn=t tae much responsibility or effort they tend to slam our nurses with up to A patients. This not only affects the nurses and the time they can spend with each patient but it taes away from the overall care each patient needs. This not only can be difficult for the nurses to attend to each patient but also dangerous. 5udd) co/author of 0" *istory of "merican (ursing7 Trends and #ras e.plains in her article how she is angst over image and lac of uni,ue identity in the nursing field. 5udd states how 0+e have a great opportunity) as we step into the future to create the image we desire as we reinforce that nursing is both an art and a science.1 This ,uote demonstrates the problem with image nurses face in Mancha 17 both past and present. +e as a society have the opportunity to change the images of many different %ob fields. These issues need to be viewed and changed. During the $334s nurses struggled with image. They were mainly used as wars way for women to help. During +orld +ar one and two women were not allowed to %oin the army) their way to help out the cause was to become a nurse to assist the 0brave1 men that went out and rised their lives for "merican. In the boo " *istory of "merican (ursing by Deborah 5udd) Gathleen !it2men) and :. Megan Davis e.plain the history of nursing. "s they demonstrate the struggles and accomplishments they had made over the past few years. In this boo it also informs us about the image of women and what they struggled with. 5udd) !it2men and Davis e.plain in their boo) 0(urse-s image is not only dependent on what they wear) it is based on how they act in or out of the worplace and on the care they provide for those in their charge.1 Hpg. $A;I this demonstrates it is not always the outside appearance that matters but the inside. +hat society loos for in nursing is their image but they never tal about how smart the nurses are) how they made a different in someone-s life) and finally how they improve our hospitals. Fnce again our nurses go unseen to the communities- eyes. Many issues over the years have been created to demoni2e the importance of nursing but lie all strong minded people nurse have come together to overcome everything thrown at them. (urses face many difficulties and hardships in their %ob field as many do not tae the time to reali2e the issues they go though. "n issue they deal with is with many people feeling lie this is a good %ob that is low ,uality to be in) education standards are low and nurses are not mentally prepared to be in a hospital. The nurse to patient ratio has become a big issue for nurses as many are not able to care for all of their patients e,ually. During the $344s nurses were viewed as an image used to promote the women-s involvement in the war. (ot only has image been a problem Mancha 18 for nurses but the role they play in the hospital has also affect the nursing community. There are steps people have taen to address these ongoing issues but have we really found a solutionE Solution to Issues !olutions made in our society have always left room for improvement. !uch as racism that is still trying to be completely solved) moved on) and forgotten. The solution of maing sure a nurse avoids the gender roles) the amount of importance and the nowledge in the medical field has in fact be improved but not yet easily solved. Technology has also contributed to our communities trying to find a solution to everything. "s a community our society needs to change the way we perceive nurses before we can succeed and become a better place. Many people are recogni2ing the systemic and professional challenges nurses face) as they have developed the sills and political the voice to overcome them. 5udd) co/author of 0" *istory of "merican (ursing7 Trends and #ras e.plain that 0!ilence Jon these issuesK is consent.C This demonstrates that the nurses have been silence for too long. They must develop their own voice and stand up for what they do. (urses are an important role in our society and they should be recogni2ed for that. Bullying in the nursing field has always been a huge issue. <sually it involves a higher staff member and the nurse) this usually never results very well. Thans to these issue there have been some laws and rules created to prevent this 0bullying1 in the wor field. "lthough we le to thin everyone gets along now we are wrong and these problems need to be address and solved immediately. (urses should not have to go to wor feeling harassed by both co/wor and patient then on top of that having to tae care of > patients at a time with no help. #veryone in this woring field needs to learn to get along and if they feel they are above everyone and want to Mancha 19 treat people in that manner then they could leave. Fur society does not need people who have a simple and fi.ed mind set in our %ob fields maing it difficult for others to wor with. Technology has played an important role in today-s society. "s we use it to our everyday advantages people everyday are figuring out more and more ways to integrate technology in today-s lifestyles. In an article The #volution of Definitions for (ursing Informatics a Critical "nalysis and 'evised Definition by (ancy !taggers) PhD) '() 6""( and Cheryl Bagley Thompsons) PhD) '( e.plain) 0The earliest series of definitions for nursing informatics highlighted the role of technology for what was a new specialty in nursing.1 In this article it goes deeper into the early definition by !choles and Barber as they demonstrate that nursing informatics was 0the application of computer technology to all fields of nursing) nursing service) nurse education) and nursing research.1 "s technology enhances so does the use of who to use it and what to use it for comes into play. "s many nurses need to be up to date with the latest technology used to assist them during their practice. Then this definition was then modified into an early definition of medical informatics. The definition acnowledging that with all medical informatics the health care professionals would be a part of it. Therefore) nursing informatics of those were collected informational technologies which concern themselves with the patient care decision/maing process performed by health care practitioners. "s the article continues to put emphasis on technology and added the concept of the nursing role within nursing informatics. This later than solves the issues nurses deal with regarding lower standards and technology use. Ho Nurses are !iee" To"ay The %ob title nurse has come along tremendously over the past couple of years. Many have succeeded in changing the way society views nurse.
