All 49 sounds of the Sanskrit language emanate from the sound AUM, the primordial
sound of all being. It is through the chanting of the Sanskrit alphabet that we can open
and remove energy blocks in our Chakras. The rainbow light of the Chakras is ever shin-
ning and ever present for all beings to access. The Bija meditation is an ancient yogic
practice to tune, tone and clear the nadis or Chakra channels.
The term Sat-Chakras refers only to the chief six
Chakras; Muladhara, Svadisthana, Manipura, Anahata,
Vishudda and Ajna. Above all of these we have the Sa-
hasrara Chakra: this is the chief of all the Chakras. All the
Chakras have their intimate connection with this center.
Hence this is not included as one among the Shat-Chakras.
This is situated above all Chakras.
The number of petals in each Chakra is determined by
the number and position of the Nadis around the Chakra.
From each Chakra a particular number of yoga nadis crop
up. The Chakras give the appearance of a lotus with the
nadis as its petals. The sound is produced by vibrations of
the corresponding Sanskrit letter. The Chakras with their
petals hang downward when kundalini is at the Muladhara
Chakra. When it is awakened they turn upward toward
Brahmarandhra (god/source).

FIVE MOUTH POSITIONS
The fve mouth positions are areas where the tip of the tongue is placed prior to mak-
ing the given sound. The tongue is then moved backwards or forward depending on the
position. It is important that the proper positions are used for each of the sounds as
indicated. Tongue position is one of the elements that makes Sanskrit such a powerful
and universal language for chanting. Each sound has its own unique tone.
The key to learning the mouth positions is practice. We have included an area to prac-
tice writing each of the sounds. As you write the letters pronounce them aloud, this will
assist you in your learning. You will quickly develop a recognition of the letter to the
sound. We encourage you to use this notebook as you work with the DVD.
MULADHARA CHAKRA
Muladhara is the frst chakra. It means root or foundation. It is that which links us to
nature, to manifestation, to the Earth. It color is red and it four petals represent the
four cardinal directions (east, south, west, north). The glan associated with this chakra
is the gonads located near the anus.
The location in the Chakra Bija meditation is at the sit bones. This position is easily lo-
cated by sitting on the foor. Shifting your pelvis from side to side you can feel a rect-
angular shape contacting the foor. The frst sound is located at the right front position.
The sounds then continue around in a clockwise manner.
MULADHARA CHAKRA
SVADISTHANA CHAKRA
The second chakra is the Svadisthana chakra. It is located in the pelvic region of the
body. Its color is orange and it has six petals. Relationships, creativity and intimacy are
domains of the Svadisthana chakra. Interestingly enough this is the region from which we
are naturally introduced to the world via our mothers womb (pelvic area). Also symbolic
of the birth process is the associated element of this Chakra, water.
The upper part of the hip bones are key to locating this Chakra on your body. First
locate your pelvic area. Put your thumbs on the front part of your hips and then extend
your fngers toward your back. Where your thumbs and fngers touch the front and back
of your hips is the location for four of the points. The other two are the sacrum and
genitals.
SVADISTHANA CHAKRA
MANIPURA CHAKRA
Manipura is the Chakra of will power or individuality. It has ten petals that represent the
ten planets of the solar system. The color is brilliant yellow and it is related to the diges-
tive system. Often it is referred to as the solar plexus Chakra. Areas of our lives that are
energetically charged by this Chakra are autonomy, purpose, destiny, and self-empow-
erment. It is related to the element of Fire, as in the suns fre.
Eight of the petals of this Chakra are located in a ring about the diaphragm. Just at the
lower part of the rib cage. The frst two sounds are located inside the body and are tar-
geted at the digestive organs.

ANAHATA CHAKRA
Anahata is the brilliant forest green heart Chakra. It has twelve petals that are repre-
sentative of the zodiac. It refects in our lives through the compassion and unconditional
love that we give and receive. It boundaries are as limitless and infnite as the element air.
The organ relationship is with the heart and lungs. The previous three chakras are the
target for the compassion and love which originates from the heart Chakra. It is where
the ego faces the challenge of growing up with a focus on life as unity.
This Chakra is located in the upper chest region. Just below the armpits. The twelve
petals are distributed in a ring about the body. The frst sound is made at the center of
the chest on the breast bone.

VISHUDDA CHAKRA
Vishudda is often referred to as the throat Chakra. It has sixteen petals and its element
is ether or deep space. It has a blue-sky color and is related to the thyroid glans. Vi-
shudda is the creative communicative infuence in our lives. It is indicative of its position
and relation to the nerves of our neck and throat area. Major nerves extend from the
neck down into our arms and hands (creative) and the vocal mechanism is located in the
throat (communicative).
To locate this Chakra extend your arms out from your side straight and take a deep
breath - breathing in through your fnger tips. Do this several times and then put your
arms down. The energized area that you feel is the Vishudda Chakra.

AJNA CHAKRA
Ajna is the fnal Chakra with audible sound associated with it. It has two petals which
represent duality. It is the type of duality through which the center can be found. Note
AUM is the center letter or the key Bija for this Chakra. Aum represents that primordial
center which is the source of all. This Chakra relates to the brain and visionary func-
tions. The color is indigo representing deep - space. The deep space before the center
of the Universe. Its life infuences are vision, intuition, and far seeing.
This Chakras location is in the center of the head about ear level. The frst sphere is
about the size of the head, represented by the sound HAM. The second smaller sphere
representing KSHAM, rest inside of the larger sphere.
AJNA CHAKRA
SAHARARA CHAKRA
Sahasrara represents the center of the Universe. It is the crown Chakra the shimmering
thousand petalled lotus which give light to all of the Chakras. It is the sound of silence.
Its infuence in our lives is enlightenment, fulfllment and completion. It is the route
through which our spirit came and the route through which it will return to be one with
the source.
Its location is about two inches above the head. When it opens a food of warmth de-
scends down the head and into the body. When completing the chanting portion of the
Chakra Bijas it is important to sit for a moment in silence. The longer the better. Say a
prayer to a favorite deity for peace in your heart, community and the world.
