Activity 1

Use the mark scheme below and work in pairs to grade the 4 example pieces of
work. You must try and place the work into the correct level. Wherever possible you
should use a best fit model, this means that you take an overall view rather than
harshly penalising for one fault. Use the space provided to give specific examples and
write a summary comment at the bottom of the page. You are examining all of the
magazine features

framing a shot,
including and excluding
elements as
appropriate
The framing of each
of the photos
individually is very
good and deserves
to be put in the top
level band the
photos include
correct mise en
scene because the
people in all of the
photographs are
dressed in a correct
appropriate manor.
All of the photos
that are in a frame
lay out our correctly
sized apart from
one, which is the
lady with the red
hair. I will explain
why later in
another one of the
boxes but all of the
photos fit in well
with the magazine
style,.
using a variety of shot
distances as
appropriate
The magazine has
included a close up
a mid shot and a
long shot, which is
why this candidate
would score highly.
The different types
of shots that have
been are used
correctly in the
right places for
example a mid shot
is perfect for the
front cover because
you can see the
style of the person
featured and the
persons overall
appearance at a

distant thats in the
readers central
visual interest. The
contents features a
long shot a mid shot
and a close up
which is good
because it provides
variety to the page
Shooting material
appropriate to the task
set
The way the
magazine creator
has chose the
models for that
feature in the
magazine is seen to
be effective as she
has tried to
resemble and re
create the
magazine Q adding
her own aspects
into. The models
she has chosen suit
this effectively and
the way they are
styled and dressed
really goes well
within the genre
she is aiming to
create.
selecting mise-en-
scne including colour,
figure, lighting, objects
and setting
The colour she has
tried to use is
almost done in a
mirror image of the
Q colour pallet. The
model is also
intertwined with
the colour pallet
because her lipstick
matches exactly
with the colour
used along with the
colour of her dress.
The colour of her
dress is used as the
background circle in
filler on her front
cover.
manipulating
photographs as
appropriate to the
context for
presentation, including
cropping and resizing
The way she has
used just a single
person in her front
cover is simplistic
yet effective and
the pose she has
used with peace
symbol on her left
hand fits in well
with the type of
magazine she is

YR 12 Media AFL Activity Print

trying to portray.
She has cropped
some of the photos
on the contents
page the noticeable
one being the
photo that features
in page 17. The one
down point is the
photo of the lady
with red hair on the
contents page all of
her hair does not fit
in the screen and
which makes it look
slightly amateur
accurately using
language and register
You can clearly tell
this magazine
creator has made a
real effort to try
and cover different
genres of music by
using Lady Gaga
Jay-Z and David
Grohl she has done
this as Q cover
many different
genres of music but
it is clear to see
what genre the
creator has gone for
herself at the same
time. The language
that is used fits in
well with the
description of the
magazine the
quotes she has used
from artists seem
believable. The
language on the
double page spread
really gives you a
inside into Roxy
Carter and is a very
good read
appropriately
integrating illustration
and text
The majority of the
Integration of
illustration and
integration is good
and provides an
easy interesting
read. Although this
only criticism is the
model featured in
the photo on the
front cover appears
to be sweet
whereas
underneath there is

YR 12 Media AFL Activity Print

a description of the
way in which she
features in the
magazine saying
inside her mad, bad
world. And
personally its
unconvincing that
she is made or bad
but apart from that
the integrating and
illustration of the
text is very good.
showing understanding
of conventions of
layout and page design
The layout of the
pages is a very clear
layout with simple
designs featuring
basic but effective
conventions
everything on the
pages looks
correctly positioned
and nothing seems
to stick out as being
out of place right
down to the
positioning of the
smallest font.
showing awareness of
the need for variety in
fonts and text size
She has showed the
awareness for
several fonts and
different sized texts
throughout the font
on the double page
spread on the
Inside her Mad Bad
World article is just
the right size and
the different fonts
used on the front
cover helps the
magazine to looks
smart and edgy
along with the fact
that it adds more
for the reader to
visualise and be
attracted too.

framing a shot,

The framing of the
shots is very poor
standard the front
cover is set into a
white frame at
which the left and
right side are
completely
disproportionate to
each other with the
right side being a
lot thicker than the
left. The cutting out
of the background
on the front cover
is incredibly
obvious and each of
the people have a
white line around
there entire body.
Which is obvious
for the reader that
the magazine front
cover has been
imposed onto a
background. The
photos in the
contents page have
been framed with
very ineffective
unattractive frames
of odd colours.

The Varity of shots
that have been
used in relation to
distances are poor
the majority of the
photo distances a
mid shots apart
from the two
photos on the

which are hard to
distinguish whether
they are in fact
close up photos or
just zoomed in.

shooting material
appropriate to the task
set
The shooting
material is not
really appropriate
to the task at all
you wouldnt be
able to tell this is a
music magazine by
looking at it and the
graffiti in the
backgrounds lets
you know its a
urban type of
magazine but it
certainly doesnt
look like a rap one.
The lads in the
yellow frame on a
context page are
clearly not a band
and this photo was
clearly either found
on a social media
site or taken by him
self on what looks
like a terrible night
out. The photos
taken of the main
group throughout
are all of them
standing in the
same position
wearing exactly the
same clothes that is
a clear sign that the
magazine creator is
clearly
inexperienced

selecting mise-en-
scne including colour,
figure, lighting, objects
and setting
The Mise en Scene
for this magazine
does not show
hardly any
relevance to his
genre of music
But at the same
time its hard to tell
what the genre of
music he is even
trying to portray.
The male in the
middle picture on
the contents page
looks completely
different to
everybody else
featured in this

YR 12 Media AFL Activity Print

persons magazine
as he wearing a
smart cardigan and
shirt compared to
the other style the
creator is trying to
show and as a
result of this he
looks completely
out of place along
with the silly
headphone that the
gentleman situated
in the middle of the
front cover has in
his ear.
manipulating
photographs as
appropriate to the
context for
presentation, including
cropping and resizing
The photographs
have little contexts
to the page they
may as well have
been put there to
make the magazine
look pretty. The
cropping of photos
is poor and the man
on the left of the
front cover has his
ear missing along
with the person on
the right who has
half his body
missing. The
cropping of the
photos on the
double page spread
is also of an
incredibly poor
standard with body
parts struggling to
fit in. Writing also
runs onto photos,
which makes the
magazine look even
less presentable.

accurately using
language and register
The language used
particularly fits in
with the magazine
because both the
language and the
magazine are
terrible its hard to
read the writing
below the mast
head because of
the style of font
that is used. The
language Is brief
and not very well
explained which
would make it hard

for new readers to

appropriately
integrating illustration
and text
The illustration and
text isnt
appropriately
integrated as some
of the text in the
contents runs onto
the photos on the
contents page and
the writing on the
double page spread
is a mess and is
everywhere and
quite clearly lacks
needed structure.
The quotes in the
middle of the
double page spread
would be hard to
read as thats
where the
magazine fold
would be and the
quotes arent up
against anything to
stand out they are
just plotted in the
background

showing understanding
of conventions of
layout and page design
The creator of this
magazine shows
little conventions of
page layout or page
design there is little
evidence that he
has took any
inspiration or tried
to add any other
magazine layouts or
page designs to his
magazine which
doesnt help him in
terms of breaking
out of the level 1
stage. The way a
frame of his photo
covers up the word
contents makes the
whole of that page
look unguided. Not
to mention the
incredibly poor
double page spread
that shows no clear
layout or page
design hes not
even considered
the divider of the
page, which would

YR 12 Media AFL Activity Print

be in a real
magazine.
showing awareness of
the need for variety in
fonts and text size
The amount of
fonts that this
student has used is
way to many hes
used 8 different
fonts through out
his front cover his
contents page and
his double page
spread. This is bad
as it lacks
consistency and is
seen to be off
putting to the
reader, which will
deter them from
reading on. The
colours he has used
are completely un
related its like the
student has just put
whatever colour he
wants in certain
places which looks
unprofessional. And
the size of the font
also tends to vary a
lot too which shows
yet another
inconsistency.
