Veahavta: the Canadian Jewish Humanitarian and Relief Committee is a
charitable social service organization founded in 1996 that is dedicated to promoting
positive change in the lives of people of all faiths who are marginalized by poverty locally and nationally. Veahavta clients include homeless individuals, Aboriginal communities, as well as others facing social inequities and lack of health-promotion resources. On the global stage, Veahavta is committed to international aid and crisis response. Veahavta derives its name and mission from the Torahs commandment, veahavta lrayacha kamocha love your neighbor as you would love yourself. It is our obligation and privilege to reach out with compassion to those who are most vulnerable regardless of race, religion, or nationality. Veahavtas innovative programs aim to break barriers, restore human dignity, foster inclusivity, and empower marginalized individuals to break the cycle of poverty and fulfill their unique human potential. THE TRAGEDY OF A LACK OF EDUCATION Education is our societys most powerful tool for giving children the means to be successful and contribute to society. Children in poverty, however, frequently do not have access to the same educational and developmental resources as their counterparts from higher-income families. When we put education first, we can reduce poverty, end wasted potential, and look forward to stronger and better societies for all. 10% of Canadian households live below the low income cut off 1 in 6 children in Canada lives in poverty 150,000,000 children around the world grow up illiterate The Greater Toronto Area is now the child poverty capital of Ontario, 50% of Ontarios children in poverty now live in the GTA (Childrens Aid Society, Child Poverty in the GTA report) VEAHAVTA : WHO WE ARE T H E

P R O J E C T ABOUT THE KINDER KIT PROJECT: Many families cannot afford the costs associated with attending school, such as buying a uniform or purchasing school supplies. Without the proper tools to learn, a childs chance at success is dramatically decreased. The Kinder Kit Project provides school kits (backpacks with school supplies and other essential items) to underprivileged children, locally and around the world. The kits contain the necessary supplies for a childs academic year. From 2009 to 2013, Veahavta has distributed over 65,000 Kinder Kits locally and to 10 countries around the world. 2 EACH KINDER KIT CONTAINS: 1 BACKPACK 2 EXERCISE BOOKS 5 PENS 5 PENCILS 1 ERASER 1 PENCIL SHARPENER 1 RULER 1 PENCIL CASE Jewish Family & Child Services Flemington Neighborhood Services New Circle Childrens Aid Society Evangel Hall The Learning Enrichment Foundation The Davenport-Perth Neighborhood & Community Health Centre Attawapiskat First Nation Wabaseemoong Independent Nations The Kenora Chiefs Advisory Haiti Kenya Guyana numerous Jewish & public schools in the GTA PREVIOUS RECIPIENTS INCLUDE: T H E

P R O J E C T We assist some of the poorest families in the GTA. Many of which have difficulties providing basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter. Thus, purchasing backpacks and school supplies is just not realistic for most. We were able to help many of our families thanks to Veahavtas support by providing much needed school supplies for children who would otherwise have nothing.
