Volume 38 Number 20 May 11, 2014 803-256-1654 / www.eastminsterpres.org Dear Eastminster Family, Richard Rohr, a Franciscan priest and author writes, We do not think ourselves into new ways of living. We live ourselves into new ways of thinking. While Im not sure I agree entirely, I do think its a helpful thought. For most people, insights into who and whos we are come from our life experiences. Which is one reason I encourage you to move beyond yourself by serving. Very often, serving our Lord compels us to move beyond our comfort zone. And it is often in the gentle rawness of the unfamiliar that we encounter Jesus. Feeding the homeless, teaching despite feelings of inadequacy, going on a mission trip, joining a Bible study, singing in public, or mentoring a child from a different socio-economic group are a few examples of serving that come to mind. This week and next, please take a few minutes to think and to pray about how God is calling you to serve. I encourage you to use the Service Commitment Form that lists 120 different ways Eastminster can facilitate your serving. Most of the opportunities will begin this fall. If you need another form, contact Julie at jmcdaniel@eastminster- pres.org or click on Quicklinks on our website. On May 18, you are encouraged to submit your written Service Commitment Form during the morning offering. Think about it, Jesus doesnt say, Take up your cross and analyze me; he says, Take up your cross and follow me. And what a ride it is! In joy, Brad STAFF Dr. Bradley D. Smith Pastor Dr. Mark E. Mothers Day ofering On Sunday, May 11, Presbyterian congregations in the five presbyteries in South Carolina will participate in a special offering benefiting Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina (PCSC). The special offering is placed each year into a resident escrow fund at each of the resident campuses (Clinton, Lexington, Summerville, Florence, and Easley) and is used to help with monthly costs for those who have lived beyond their financial resources. Last year, PCSC celebrated 60 years of giving and provided over $1,100,000 in charitable care for seniors. Please use your separate pledge envelopes marked Presbyterian Communi- ties or write this offering name on the memo line of your check.
