LESSON PLAN

Topic, class, and level Operations and Factoring of Polynomials: review session, Grade 9

Objectives. (What are you trying to do in this lesson?)

1. Answer the questions on homework sheet about multiplication and factoring of
polynomials.
2. Students will practice finding GCF (great common factor), simplifying polynomials,
operations and factoring of polynomials by playing mini whiteboard activity
Understandings. (What do you want students to know and be able to do at the end of this
lesson?)

1. Students will be able to gain a deeper understanding about how to find GCF, operate
polynomials, including multiplying polynomials, simplifying polynomials, adding and
subtracting polynomials, and factoring polynomials.

Knowledge Outcomes. (What content knowledge do you want your students to gain as a result
of this lesson? Please refer to the MA Curriculum Frameworks.)

A-APR.1. Understand that polynomials form a system analogous to the integers, namely,
they are closed under the operations of addition, subtraction, and multiplication; add,
subtract, and multiply polynomials.
Assessment. (How will you check for student achievement and understanding?)

Homework, mini whiteboard activity.
Instructional Approach. (Describe activities, allotted time, and closure)

1. (5 10 min.) Go over the homework.
2. (5 min.) Go over the problems that most of students asked.
3. (40 min.) Individual mini whiteboard activity (problems has been attached with a
separate sheet). Students pass back the whiteboards/erasers/marks. Give students 12
questions in operations of polynomials, involving simplifying polynomials (e.g.

), multiplying polynomials (e.g.

), factoring of polynomials (e.g.

). Students only
need to write down the answer on the board. Each question is provided with 1-2 minutes
to answer. When teacher says, show me your answer, students will raise their
whiteboards. After question #7, students will be asked to draw a perfect circle on their
boards. This is a break time activity. The student who draws the best perfect circle will
get a bonus point. After question #14, students will be asked to draw a self-portrait. Then,
the mini-whiteboard activity ends.
4. Assign homework due next time.

Skills to be emphasized.

1. Solve problems in simplifying, operating, and factoring of polynomials.

Materials needed.
