Our data was collected from the Section 4 Statistics class. We asked each student a series of
questions and asked them on a scale of 1 to 10 how excited they were for college, on a scale of 1 to
10 how certain they were of what they were going to study in college, on a scale of 1 to 10 how
much they liked chocolate, how many hours they watch television each day, their gpa, their sat
scores, the number of pets they own and to rate cats and dogs on a scale of 1 to 10. All students
surveyed are seniors at Boston Latin who take Statistics.

1) Create a histogram of cats. Is the data skewed left or right?

skewed right

2) What is the probability that someone is 100% confident in their major?

35% of students are 100% certain of their intended college major.

3) Create a boxplot for dogs. How many outliers are there, if any?
There
is 1 outlier.

4) Create a bar graph of gpa. What is the average gpa?

The average is 3.131739.
5) What is the correlation between the number of pets a person owns and their rating of dogs on a
scale of 1 to 10?

The correlation is 0.01720938.

6) What is the standard deviation of hours of television watched daily?

The standard deviation of hours of television watched is 1.792055

7) What are the lower and upper thresholds of gpa? What is the IQR? What is the outlier?

q1=2.78 and q3=3.42
IQR=q3-q1 IQR=0.64

lower outlier threshold is q1-(1.5*IQR) 2.78-.96= 1.82
upper outlier threshold is q3+(1.5*IQR) 3.42+.96= 4.38

The outlier is 1.8.

8) Create a stem and leaf plot of the students SAT scores. What can you say about the shape of the
distribution?

The decimal point is 2 digit(s) to the right of the |

14 | 8
16 | 03
18 | 000256779003458
20 | 0100
22 | 3

This stem and leaf plot shows symmetrical data as it closely resembles the bell shaped curve of
symmetrical data.

9) Find the median of the gpa and the median of the sat. How do you think gpa and sat would relate
and why, in some cases, would they not relate?

median of gpa= 3.08
median of sat= 1890

Gpa and sat would relate if the person is both great in school and taking tests (they would have high
scores). For these people, as gpa increases, so does the sat score. Some, however, might not be good
at taking tests so there could actually be a negative correlation between their gpa and sat score.

10. Create a histogram based on the data of SAT scores. From that histogram, between what two
scores did most students surveyed receive?

Most students surveyed scored between 1800 and 1900 on the SAT.
