ASME VIII Div I Part ULW Pressure Vessels Fabricated by Layered Construction

The rules in Section VIII, Divisions 1 and 2 to cover the construction of layered vessels have
been developed to parallel each other as far as can be done within the parameters of each
Division. The design criteria may influence the selection of the Division. There are several
manufacturing techniues used to fabricate layered vessels, and these rules have been
developed to cover most techniues used today for which there is e!tensive documented
construction and operational data. Some acceptable layered shell types are shown in "ig. #$%&
2.1. Some acceptable layered head types are shown in "ig. #$%&2.2.
Scope
The rules in 'art #$% are applicable to pressure vessels or parts thereof fabricated by layered
construction as defined in (&2 and #$%&2. These rules shall be used in con)unction with the
reuirements of Subsections *, +, and ,, e!cept for directly fired vessels described in #%&2-d.
in Subsection + and e!cept for 'arts #,I and #,D in Subsection ,, or e!cept as otherwise
reuired in this 'art. The reuirements for vessels that are to contain lethal substances, #%&
2-a., apply only to the inner shell and the inner heads.
+ra/ing of layered parts is not permitted e!cept for the inner shell, inner head, and special solid
wall fittings. The 0anufacturer1s 2uality ,ontrol System as reuired by #&2-h. and *ppendi! 13
shall include the construction procedure that will outline the seuence and method of application
of layers and measurement of layer gaps.
Noenclature
The following terms are used in 'art #$% relative to layered vessels.
$ayered Vessel. * vessel having a shell and4or heads made up of two or more separate
layers5
Inner Shell. The inner cylinder which forms the pressure tight membrane5
Inner 6ead. The inner head which forms the pressure tight membrane5
Shell $ayer. $ayers may be cylinders formed from plate, sheet, or forging, or the
euivalent formed by coiling, or by helically wound interloc7ing strips. -This does not
include wire winding..
6ead $ayer. *ny one of the head layers of a layered vessel e!cept the inner head5
8verwraps. $ayers added to the basic shell or head thic7ness for the purpose of building
up the thic7ness of a layered vessel for reinforcing shell or head openings, or ma7ing a
transition to thic7er sections of the layered vessel5
Dummy $ayer. * layer used as a filler between the inner shell -or inner head. and other
layers, and not considered as part of the reuired total thic7ness.
Material
0aterial used for pressure parts shall conform to one of the specifications permitted in the
applicable 'arts of Subsections *, +, and ,, e!cept for 9:, ;:, and <: nic7el steel materials
which are permitted only for inner shells and inner heads. "or helically wound interloc7ing strip
vessels where the mechanical properties of the material are enhanced by heat treatment during
the fabrication process, the test specimens shall be ta7en from prolongations of the strip
material after winding and after heat treatment. See *ppendi! 2<.
