Captain Toolkit
859.422.1340 | DAV5K.ORG | DAV5K@DAV.ORG
Dear Team Captain,

Thank you for joining us to show support for Americas heroes with the DAV (Disabled
American Veterans) on Saturday, November 9, when we kick off Veterans Day weekend
with DAVs inaugural 5K Run to Honor Veterans!

Supporting the DAV 5K is a great way to express your support of veterans who gave so
much to protect the American Way of Life.

Tri-State people walk, run and ride their motorcycles from Sawyer Point through the
streets of Cincinnati, the city where DAV was founded 93 years ago. There is a lot of
buzz around DAVs first ever 5K an exciting testimony to our communitys deep
respect and abiding concern for the men and women who selflessly served this nation.
It also speaks to the powerful mission of one of Americas oldest, largest and most
revered veterans organizations, with its National Headquarters right here in the Tri-
State.

Each year DAV helps America keep its promises to the heroes by assisting veterans
who sacrificed blood and health in our armed forces with more than a quarter million
claims for benefits that theyve earned through their service. DAV makes sure they get
the benefits and services they and their families need to lead high quality lives with
respect and dignity!

We would like to make your job as a team captain as easy as possible. We have
formulated this toolkit to be your guide for recruiting team members and fundraising
support. In this kit you will find everything from a timeline of team coordination, to tips
on using social media, to how to communicate with your team. Please contact the DAV
at 859-422-1340 or DAV5K@dav.org with any additional questions.

Again, we would like to thank you for accepting the responsibilities of a team captain!
Make sure to let us know if you need any help along the way. We are all on this journey
together to create the first annual DAV 5K Run to Honor Veterans.

Running Hard for Americas Veterans!

We are dedicated to a single purpose: empowering veterans to lead high-quality lives
with respect and dignity. We accomplish this by ensuring that veterans and their families
can access the full range of benefits available to them; fighting for the interests of
Americas injured heroes on Capitol Hill; and educating the public about the great
sacrifices and needs of veterans transitioning back to civilian life.

come together as a community to say thank you to those who have done so much for
us. This is your chance to get in on the ground floor of an event that could become a
Cincinnati tradition around Veterans Day for years to come.

your business or one team. The DAV 5K gives your business an opportunity to partake
in team bonding as well as support a great cause!

Get everyone out and active! The DAV 5K is for all levels of fitness. Your team can
take part in walking or running the event. This is a great opportunity for your business
to practice improving a healthy active lifestyle. By participating in the DAV 5K your co-
workers will have the opportunity to work as a team to raise awareness for the DAV.

Social Media Guide
LinkedIn: Some of the most powerful fundraising tools can be the
networks youre already involved in! Connect with your team members
on LinkedIn and pool your contacts together. Engage in LinkedIn
Groups with a connection to the DAVs cause. Brand your team and
see what happens!
Below are some guidelines and best practices tips for getting the most out of
your social networks:
Facebook: Like the DAV 5K page on Facebook to stay updated on the
latest information about the 5K and the DAV! You can also use Facebook
to post a status telling everyone why the DAV cause is important to you
and why it should be important to your friends. Attach a link to your team
or personal fundraising page and watch the donations come in!

Facebook is also a great resource for coordinating your team! Create a
public team group that your members can join to stay informed leading
up to the 5K. Post progress updates with fundraising and other important
milestones. If a team member achieves a significant fundraising or
training goal, praise them publicly to help spread the word!

Twitter: You can use short and direct @ tweets to engage family,
friends, and other followers with a personalized approach to let them
know why youre running. Also use #DAV5K in your tweets about the
race and you might see them re-tweeted by DAV!
Instagram: This social photo app can also be a great way to build your
teams image and get the word out about the DAV 5K! Consider
creating a team logo and posting it to Instagram along with the official
hashtag #DAV5K to let followers know who youre running for!
Blogs: Consider starting a blog just for your team! When you login to
your Participant Center, you have access to starting a blog on a race
page dedicated to your voice! Mention team members and their
individual fundraising and training efforts. Write short spotlights that
highlight the specific veterans members may be running for. Post
updates on your plans for the 5K to reach the running community!

useful fundraising resources.
4. On the Personal Page and Team Page team captains are able to edit the team name,
provide a brief bio on why they support the cause of raising funds for the DAV5K or their

Fundraising Guide
Looking for some fun and unique ways to raise some extra money for your team? Here
are some ideas to get you started. Although raising money for your team can seem
like a daunting task at first, keep in mind that our ability to improve the lives of veterans
every day starts with you.

[ ] Make a chart listing all team members and individual fundraising goals. Set an
ambitious fundraising goal and encourage fellow team members to do the same. Stay
current with your teams donations on the Fundraising Progress Tracker.

[ ] Use the social media guidelines in this toolkit to reach out to friends,
family, and other donors you may not even be aware of -- you never know who in your
network will want to support your team!

[ ] Talk to your employer and see if they have a funds matching program.
Donations to DAV are tax-deductible and help your company stand out as socially
responsible! Also talk to your employer about setting up in-office fundraisers, such as a
casual day during which co-workers can pay you a set fee to dress down at work!

[ ] Host a poker night at a team members house, invite all of your friends
and family, and split the pot between the winner and your teams fundraising efforts!

[ ] Give it up for a good cause; have a habit you think youre spending too
much money on (daily coffee, expensive lunches, etc.)? Have all team members make
a pact to give something up for one week and donate all the money they would have
spent to your teams fundraising goals!
Raise $300 In 10 Days!

Day 1: Sponsor yourself for $25. Day 6: Ask two businesses for $15.
Day 2: Ask your boss for $15. Day 7: Ask five church members for $10.
Day 3: Ask your best friend to contribute $20. Day 8: Ask four coworkers for $10.
Day 4: Ask five neighbors to contribute $10. Day 9: Ask two friends for $10.
Day 5: Ask two family members for $25. Day 10: Relax -- you did it!

Testimony from A Veteran
Thank You For Your Support!
So many heroes who were there for us need our help now. By participating in the race or
making a meaningful gift to DAV and our injured veterans you are showing Americas
veterans youve got their backs! Thank you for your support!
Commemorate this momentous Veterans
Day event by signing up for the DAV 5K
now!

Just imagine what your support will mean to a
hero like Army veteran Nick Paea, from
Cincinnati, Ohio, who suffered a brain injury
and trauma to the back while in Afghanistan.

In the two years it took to get his claim
processed, Nick a husband and father of
four lost just about everything, including
apartments, his car, and his job. And even
then, the battle wasnt over!

Thats when Nick turned to DAV to resolve his
claim and help get his life back on track.
Special thanks to the students in the
NKU MKT 335 Class for creating this toolkit!
