Wake Up and Occupy What Needs Occupation
What is justice? The heart of it is really longing for people to be able to grow and develop
freely in a positive and constructive way. So what are the conditions that allow for that? Love
comes in and says, There isnt any difference that cant be understood. There isnt any
conflict that cant be reconciled. So that love becomes a major, major threat to the formation
of any kind of culture of dominator thinking and dominator society bell hooks
The Occupy movement is an international protest movement against social and economic
inequalities, its primary goal being to make the economic and political relations in all societies
less vertically hierarchical and more evenly distributed. Local groups often have different
focusses, but among the movement's prime concerns deal with large corporations and the global
financial system control the world in a way that disproportionately benefits a minority,
undermines democracy and is unstable (Elmhirst). While the original Occupy Movement did not
captivate the minds and hearts of the Millennials enough to make a drastic change, the Occupy
Love movement demonstrates bell hooks points regarding social inequality, upon closer
examination one can see that bell hooks foreshadows some of the points and ideas of the
movement.
The first Occupy protest was Occupy Wall Street (OWS) in a New York City park named
Zuccotti Park. That park was latter named Liberty Square. The idea of OWS came from the Arab
Spring in 2010. OWS was a protest against the 1% of ridiculously wealthy Americans. The
people involved in this movement found it unfair that one percent of Americans manage most of
the wealth distribution in the United States.
One of the questions I asked myself while doing my research for this essay is why not
let politics take care of the problem? While watching the Occupy Love documentary one of the
protesters answered my question. Protester says we cannot rely on politics to make the changes
we want because politics are poppets of banks, the banks are not democratic, we cannot vote for
banks (Velcrow Ripper). I never thought of this, but I can see why people would want to take
matters into their own hands. One of the great things about living in this country is being able to
protest and having a voice. The protesters in the occupy movement where just doing their job as
citizens. Bell hooks mentions in ()
The New Occupy Love Movement differs from the original Occupy Movement in many
ways. The Occupy Love movement is intended to both reflect and catalyze this global
awakening to a world that works for all life, a world of economic and ecological justice. We
need to do everything we can to nurture this evolving movement, our ever evolving global
society, and keep it moving always in the direction of love, in the direction of life (Bell Hooks).
The new Occupy Love Movement reflects bell hooks ideas about love.
When I write provocative social and cultural criticism that causes readers to stretch their
minds, to think beyond set paradigms, I think of that work as love in action. While it may
challenge, disturb and at times even frighten or enrage readers, love is always the place where I
begin and end (Barry). What bell hooks mean in this quote is, she likes to talk about race,
gender and sex; topics that in our generation people are open to talk about. The topic that
frequently goes into depth about in her writing is class Nowadays it is fashionable to talk about
race or gender; the uncool subject is class. Its the subject that makes us all tense, nervous, and
uncertain about where we stand (Hooks).
Where we stand: class matters by author bell hooks goes into depth about various
social class and economic crisis topics. This author is widely known by different social classes.
Bell hooks is known to be a feminist thinking but her writing covers much more topics such as
gender, race, class, oppression, capitalism, healing, teaching, self-help and media culture. Bell
hooks is an incredible critical thinker and it shows in her writing (Bell Hooks). Hooks thinks of
these topics as all having similarities therefore she fells we should think about them as a whole
rather than separately. She is not afraid to talk about the taboos in society, in contrary she fells
it is important to speak about them, for they are present.
Bells hooks was named one of the visionaries of the occupy love movement. She is a
symbol of love, so they use her with the Occupy Love media. In her visionary page they mention
bell hooks past books and imply that she predicts that this movement would happen in our
generation.
Author bell hooks says in an interview I was talking about Occupy Wall Street, which
kind of gave us elements of activism. But we are not in a 99 percent world. We are in world with
serious class complexes. The challenge is to come up with more complex understandings of
where we are, more global awareness of what connects Americans with what is happening with
suffering and oppressed people all around the world. The future is not looking bright for any of
us, be it women or people or color. We have to rethink how we live our lives (Barry). What bell
hooks says here is what the Occupy Love movement is trying to do. Occupy Love is trying to
create global awareness and turning all of that suffering and oppression into love.
The OWS movement focused on the 99 percent vs the 1 percent in America. What bell
hooks and the new Occupy Love Movement is saying is that there is much more than that, we are
talking globally not just in America. We have to change more things not just the distribution of
wealth. One can even say bell hooks is trying to imply that we have bigger more important
problems to deal with.
A difference between the OWS Movement and the new Occupy Love Movement is that
there is no way you will not succeed with the Occupy Love Movement. You might not reach
your goal, but you will still succeed. Sharing and spreading love is not something that can be
taken from you therefore; the action of sharing and spreading love cannot be a failure.
The second question I asked myself while doing some research for my essay was: why
the OWS movement not make a drastic change during and after the protest? After my research I
came to the conclusion that it might have been because they didnt have enough Millennials
involved in the Movement. Millennials are people born between the early 1980s to the early
2000s. The OWS Movement has mostly baby boomers involved in the movement. The reason
why I think millennials (my generation) would bee of better service to the Movements is because
millennials "want to be impactful and influential" (Wojcik).
Occupy Love is targeting more of the new generation (Millennials) with all of the new
media. They are selling this love effect to the new generation and think its brilliant. The new
generation is the ones that care about global warming, dont eat mean because they love animals,
the ones that care about love because of the way they were nurtured as children. The millennials
where raised in a different time period then baby boomers. "They've been the chief technology
officers at home since they were 7 years old. They are used to having a seat at the table and a
voice at an early age. Seventy-four percent believe they influence the decisions of those around
them" (Wojcik). Millennials are used to having a voice, a voice that most baby boomers didnt
have. This voice and love they were given as kids will help them make drastic changes is the
Occupy Love Movement and future movements. Author bell hooks talked about love before the
mallennials where even born.
As you can see by me examples in this essay Author bell hooks foreshadows some of the
points and ideas regarding the Occupy Love Movement. If the Occupy Love Movement keeps
demonstrating and following bell hooks points and keep using social media and the notion of
Love to appeal to new generations I am positive the changes will be dramatic and historical.
