So/Neither

*We use So and Neither when we agree with someone.


*If someone says something positiveand we agree with them we can use So.
*If someone says something negativeand we agree with them we can use Neither.
*Remember! The verb in the statement must agree with the verb in the response.

To be - With the verb to be you use so or neither, then the verb to be (am), then the subject
(I). See the examples below.
SENTENCE RESPONSE
I'm tired. So am I.
I'm not tired. Neither am I.
Present - With verbs in the present tense you use so or neither, then do and then the subject
(I). See the examples below.
SENTENCE RESPONSE
I swim. So do I.
I don't swim. Neither do I.
Present Perfect - With verbs in the present perfect you use so or neither, then have and
then the subject (I). See the examples below.
SENTENCE RESPONSE
I have finished. So have I.
I haven't finished. Neither have I.
Future - With verbs in the future you use so or neither, then will and then the subject
(I). See the examples below.
SENTENCE RESPONSE
I will study. So will I.
I won't study. Neither will I.
Past - With verbs in the past tense you use so or neither, then did and then the subject
(I). See the examples below.
SENTENCE RESPONSE
I finished. So did I.
I didn't finish. Neither did I.
*Exception verbs: can, could, may, might, shall, should.
CAN: I can swim. So can you.
I cant swim. Neither can you.
COULD: I could swim. So could you.
I couldnt swim. Neither could you.
SHOULD: I should see a doctor. So should you.
I shouldnt eat ice-cream. Neither should you.
