I believe that each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. It is my desire as a educator to help students meet their ullest potential in these areas by providing an environment that is sae, supports ris!"ta!ing, and invites a sharing o ideas. #here are three elements that I believe are conducive to establishing such an environment, $1% the teacher acting as a guide, $&% allowing the child's natural curiosity to direct his(her learning, and $)% promoting respect or all things and all people. *hen the teacher's role is to guide, providing access to inormation rather than acting as the primary source o inormation, the students' search or !nowledge is met as they learn to ind answers to their questions. +or students to construct !nowledge, they need the opportunity to discover or themselves and practice s!ills in authentic situations. Providing students access to hands"on activities and allowing adequate time and space to use materials that reinorce the lesson being studied creates an opportunity or individual discovery and construction o !nowledge to occur. Equally important to sel"discovery is having the opportunity to study things that are meaningul and relevant to one's lie and interests. ,eveloping a curriculum around student interests osters intrinsic motivation and stimulates the passion to learn. -ne way to ta!e learning in a direction relevant to student interest is to invite student dialogue about the lessons and units o study. .iven the opportunity or input, students generate ideas and set goals that ma!e or much richer activities than I could have created or imagined mysel. *hen students have ownership in the curriculum, they are motivated to wor! hard and master the s!ills necessary to reach their goals. /elping students to develop a deep love and respect or themselves, others, and their environment occurs through an open sharing o ideas and a 0udicious approach to discipline. *hen the voice o each student is heard, and environment evolves where students eel ree to e1press themselves. 2lass meetings are one way to encourage such dialogue. I believe children have greater respect or their teachers, their peers, and the lessons presented when they eel sae and sure o what is e1pected o them. In setting air and consistent rules initially and stating the importance o every activity, students are shown respect or their presence and time. In turn they learn to respect themselves, others, and their environment. +or mysel, teaching provides an opportunity or continual learning and growth. -ne o my hopes as an educator is to instill a love o learning in my students, as I share my own passion or learning with them. I eel there is a need or compassionate, strong, and dedicated individuals who are e1cited about wor!ing with children. In our competitive society it is important or students to not only receive a solid education, but to wor! with someone who is aware o and sensitive to their individual needs. I am such a person and will always strive to be the best educator that I can be.
