Construction Flow Chart.

1. Client appoints the architect and the structural and MEP consultant.
2. Concept Design
3. Schematic Design
4. Design Development
5. Tender Stage
6. Construction Stage
a. Structural Drawings are prepared by the structural consultant. These drawings then
go to the architect for review. The architect approves them and these become good
for construction drawings. The civil contractor just executes them in the field.
b. The MEP Shop drawings are made by the respective Subcontractors on the basis of
the tender drawings provided to them.
c. The MEP shop drawings are co-ordinated (generally by overlapping them on
AutoCAD 2D). The architect then reviews the drawings and stamps them. These
drawings become Good For Construction drawings.

BIM in India
BIM implementation is generally tougher in India as most of the key players, the Architect, Structural
Consultant and MEP consultant use traditional ways of creating drawings, ie AutoCAD 2d. There are
few developers that use BIM
Problems with the Indian Construction Industry:
1. Traditional softwares used by the Architect, Structural and MEP Consultant to produce
design documents.
2. Inability of the contractors and sub contractors to create shop drawings. The MEP
contractors still have inhouse expertise to create accurate shop drawings but the civil
contractors do not have the capability to create shop drawings.
3. Lack of efficient co-ordination between different trades
4. Traditional ways of BOQ computation: Inefficient and inaccurate ways of calculating
quantities, therefore leading to price deviations.
5. Inefficient RFI management.
6. Design changes by client during construction stage

Role of a VDC consultant in the Indian Market Scenario:
A VDC consultant needs to be hired at the early stages of the project who during the schematic and
Design Development Stage can accurately model the structure and different systems from the
drawing of the Architect, structural and MEP consultant. The VDC consultant can then use this model
to accurately link it to material schedules for BOQ generation. Also this model can be used for
generating clashes between systems, thereby reducing time spent at site on managing clashes.
The model can be linked to the overall time schedule of the project, thereby keeping a track of the
project.
The VDC Consultant can also check the drawings of the subcontractors with respect to the original
model, thereby keeping track of any changes that might happen during the shop drawing stage,
thereby increasing cost of the project.
