Who is the poet?
Poet = The person who wrote the poem.
Who is the Speaker?
Speaker = The voice of the poem.
What does the title mean?
Title = The name of the poem

What does theme mean?
Theme = What the poem is about/ the
main point of the poem.
What does tone mean?
Tone = How does the poet feel about
what he is writing?

What is alliteration?
Alliteration = When two or more words close to each
other or on the same line begin with the same letter
or sound for example Burnt black, safe side.
What is assonance?
Assonance = When two or more words close to each
other, or on the same line, have the same vowel
sound (A, E, I, O, U ) e.g. The fat cat sat on a mat.
E.g.. Moses supposes his toes are roses.

What is a simile?
Simile = When two things are compared using
the words as, like or than examples include
As black as coal or faster than the speed of
light.
What is a metaphor?
Metaphor = When two things are compared
without using the words as, like or than
examples include You are a star, My house is
a wreck or John is an angel.

What is onomatopoeia?
Onomatopoeia = When a word sounds like
what it is describing. For example The
bees buzzed around the flower.
What is imagery?
Imagery = The picture you imagine in
your mind after reading a poem.

What is personification?
Personification = is when poets
describe objects or things as if
they were human.

What is this poem about?
This poem is all about the Lake Isle of Innisfree
and the loneliness the poet feels when he is
away from his home. The poet is living in London
and longs to back home in Innisfree where he is
happiest.

What is happening in the poem?
In this poem W.B. Yeats is wishing he was back home in Innisfree
surrounded by nature. The poem describes the peaceful island which
is full of nature and tranquillity in comparison to the grey, noisy
London where Yeats was when he wrote the poem. W.B. Yeats
describes the small house he will build on Innisfree from twigs and
branches. He will have nine bean rows and beehives for honey. He
describes the sounds of the cricket song and the flutter of the
birds wings. He also tells us that the heather will glow in the
sunshine. He tells us that the nicest sound will be the lapping of the
water against the shore, which he can head even as he stands on the
streets of London.

What are the themes in this poem?
There are lots of themes in this poem: Nature,
memories, loneliness, childhood, a poem which
describes a place/person who is sad/ has vivid
descriptions/left a clear picture in your mind.

W.B. Yeats uses Alliteration in the poem to create a
rhythm.
E.g. I hear lake water lapping with low sounds on
the shore.

This is a lament/elegy. The poet is writing about the
death of a very close loved one who has just died.
This poem tells us how he feels.
What is happening in the poem?
In this poem W.H. Auden is expressing the sorrow
or grief he feels after the death of a close loved
one. His grief is overwhelming in the poem and he
expresses this by telling us how much this person
meant to him and how he wants the world to stop
now that his loved one has died. He tells us that his
loved one was his entire world.

There are many themes in this poem including: death, grief,
love, sadness, loneliness, anger, love, a poem that made you
feel sad/ angry, a poem which contained clear descriptions.
What poetic techniques are in this poem?
The poet uses lots of techniques in this poem to create a
clear picture in the readers mind.
Alliteration= the poet frequently uses alliteration in the
poem. Eg clocks..cut, barkingbone, lovelast
Hyperbole [Exaggeration] = Auden uses hyperbole to get
across his love for his friend in stanza three. The claims in
stanza three are impossible, but they communicate deep
love. In stanza four Auden uses impossible actions to get
across his terrible sadness. It is impossible to pack up the
moon or pour away the oceans etc.

Metaphors= There are lots of metaphors to be found in
this poem. He compares the dead person to being like his
own personal compass in the third verse.

The poet uses lots if imagery in the poem to show the
reader how overwhelmingly sad and unhappy he is.
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone
This is a very powerful image to begin with. The poet is in
such despair that he wants time to freeze and all
communication to stop.
He creates a mournful image when he tells us that he
wants the dogs and the pianos to be silenced.
In the final verse the oceans, stars, sun and wood are not
wanted any more by the speaker as he is burdened with
grief. These images create a very bleak and dark
atmosphere.

Possible reasons:
I liked this poem as it was realistic.
The poets description of grief was a realistic
one and I think one that people could relate to.
I liked how the poets grief became more and
more intense as the poem progressed..

This poem is about friendship and relationships
and it describes how the poets feelings for her
friend develop and change.
What is happening in the poem?
In this poem the poet is describing a
relationship. At first the couple begin as
friends but as the friendship progresses the
couple begin a relationship. Unfortunately, the
relationship doesnt last and the poet goes on to
describe the breakdown of the relationship.

Imagery - there are lots of imagery in this poem for
example less eager than the skaters going for gold
Similes the poet uses similes throughout the poem for
example At first we will meet as friends.
Punctuation the poet uses run-on lines in verses 1-2.
This shows us how excited the poet is about the
relationship.

relationship.
