For Medford residents, all
these things will be possible as
the township prepares to launch a
new website and mobile app in-
tended to make accessibility to
residents easier in a variety of
facets.
Township manager Chris
Schultz said a new website should
be ready to go within a couple of
weeks. With it will come a vast
number of tools for residents.
One of them is a new citizen re-
sponse program. Residents will
be able to report water main
breaks, potholes and other re-
pairs on either the website or the
app.

The following information was
provided by the Medford Town-
ship Police Department.
Medford Police responded to an
anonymous call in the 100 block
of West Centennial Drive for the
report of a loud party. Patrols ar-
rived to find an underage drink-
ing party in and around the resi-
dence. Numerous subjects
were attempting to flee the area
and were located hiding around
the interior and exterior of the
home.
Evesham Township Police re-
sponded to the scene and assisted
Medford Police with the large
group of subjects. A total of nine
juveniles, ages ranging from 16 to
17 years old, were charged with
underage consumption of alco-
hol. An additional nine juveniles
were contacted, it was deter-
mined they had not been drink-
ing alcohol, and all were released
to their respective parents.
Also, six young adults were lo-
cated at the residence, who had
not been drinking, and were re-
leased on scene to a responsible
third-party adult.

ast year at this time, we
preached how important it was
to stay local for the summer-
time. We said that the 102 days be-
tween Memorial Day and Labor Day
weekends are crucial for the Jersey
Shore, which, no matter where you
live in our fine state, has a vital impact
on our economy.
We are now a year-and-a-half re-
moved from the devastation that was
caused by Hurricane Sandy, but some
Shore towns are still fighting to fully
recover. Beach remediation is all but
complete, and the boardwalks and
shops are up and running, for the most
part at least those that decided to re-
build.
But these Shore towns still need our
support.
Beach Season 2013 was not a good
one. As if rebuilding from Sandy was-
nt bad enough, an incredibly wet June
kept visitors away from the Shore dur-
ing prime weekends. Sales for stores
in the hardest-hit areas of the storm
were off anywhere from 20-40 percent
last year, according to state economic
reports. And Gov. Christies office esti-
mated that companies lost more than
$63 million in business due to the
storm.
So whats the message here? Its sim-
ple: Visit the Shore this summer, and
visit often.
New Jersey residents often take our
coastline for granted, but we should
realize how lucky we are to have such
a gem this close to home. So lets pay it
back this summer.
There are fewer than three weeks
until the official start of the summer
beach season, but with schools letting
out a little later this year thanks to the
snowy winter, there is still plenty of
time to plan your summer vacation at
the Jersey Shore.
The beach towns need your support,
now more than ever. Lets all dedicate
at least part of our summer to giving
back.

Freedom Barks asks council for help

Lately, the Freedom Park Dog Run has
gone to the dogs, but not in a good way.
Representatives from Freedom Barks,
the nonprofit organization helping to
maintain the dog park, attended last weeks
council meeting. Speaking on their behalf,
Jo Sue Kaufman issued a plea for assis-
tance in keeping the park clean.
According to Freedom Barks, litter and
dog excrement have become a major issue
at the park, filling the ground, bushes and
even trees with waste.
Our main problem at this point is deal-
ing with the litter and garbage, she said.
To deal with this, Freedom Barks has
found someone who is willing to clean the
park regularly, but only if he gets paid. The
organization is concerned about liability
issues if it hires someone for the job.
Township Manager Chris Schultz said
the lack of public works staff prevents the
township from having someone frequently
patrol the dog park. Council added the
township is not in a position to add an em-
ployee just for cleaning the dog park at this
time.
We no longer have the disposable in-
come to clean up after the public, Council-
man Randy Pace said.
Schultz also said the amount of litter
and trash shows the lack of care some visi-
tors have in keeping the park clean.
The law in Medford is that you pick up
after your dog, he said.
Kaufman said the dog park has been a
huge benefit for the township with upward
of 300 people visiting it on a nice weather
day. She said many of these people are from
out of town and are visiting local business-
es, providing a financial benefit to the Med-
ford Village area.
The dog park has not been the only place
overtaken by litter. Pace said the town-
ships skate park was full of trash just days
after a clean up project he participated in.
He also remarked only four people attend-
ed the skate park clean up despite heavy
advertising.
While the issue of litter appears unre-
solved, council asked Freedom Barks to
speak to the Medford Youth Athletic Asso-
ciation about using a contractor to help
clean the park.
In other news:
After numerous long discussions and
debates, council adopted an ordinance reg-
ulating donation bins in Medford. The final
vote was 3-1, with Pace voting no and Coun-
cilman Frank Czekay absent.
Pace fought the ordinance up until the
vote, re-iterating there was no need for the
township to have such an ordinance. He
said a resolution allowing the township to
enforce the state statute on donation bins

was the only thing they needed to
do.
Under the new ordinance, do-
nation bins are banned from mu-
nicipal property, and a $25 fee is
attached to any donation bins on
private property.
Schultz gave council a presen-
tation on the townships health-
care plan at the beginning of the
meeting. His presentation showed
the differences in the townships
current self-funded health plan as
opposed to the New Jersey health
benefits program.
The townships goal is to re-
duce and stabilize health-care
costs through better case manage-
ment, reduced claims and more
awareness among township em-
ployees.
Schultz updated the public on
the roadwork project on Chapel
Avenue.
The road will be closed for
much of the summer as a culvert
pipe is being replaced. The proj-
ect, which will cost $170,000, will
include new guardrails along the
curve on the road. While no spe-
cific timeline has been an-
nounced, the project will keep the
road closed for at least a couple
months.
The next Medford Township
council meeting is scheduled for
May 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Public
Safety Building.

The Independence Sinfonia, a
professional 40-piece chamber or-
chestra, will present a concert at
the Medford Leas auditorium on
Sunday afternoon, May 18 at 2:30
p.m.
The Sinfonia, conducted by
Maestro Jerome Rosen, will play
Haydens Symphony Number
13, The Drumroll
and Mozarts Clarinet Concer-
to. The public is invited and
tickets are $10 per person at the
door.
The Sinfonia, now in its 17th
season, draws its members from
throughout the Philadelphia and
South Jersey area.
The orchestra is comprised of
talented professional musicians
who, united in their love of classi-
cal music, volunteer their servic-
es to bring great music to the
community.
Rosen led the Cleveland Reper-
toire Orchestra at Boston Univer-
sity and was director of the Oak
Park Symphony in Detroit. A vio-
linist, Rosen served as associate
concertmaster of the Detroit
Symphony and the Boston Sym-
phony, as well as concert master
of the Boston Pops. He now lives
in Jersey City and views the Inde-
pendence Sinfonia as his retire-
ment job.
The Medford Arts Center,
which has sponsored Sinfonia ap-
pearances in Medford for the past
six years, teamed up with Med-
ford Leas to move the concert to
the retirement communitys spa-
cious auditorium.
The acoustics are excellent,
and we look forward to playing
to an informed and appreciative
audience, says Yole Paterson, a
Sinfonia board member who
lives in Medford and who organiz-
es the orchestras appearances
here.
A number of the musicians
live in nearby Southern New Jer-
sey towns and are delighted not to
have to cross the bridge.

Freedom Park to host
Ride of Silence May 21
On Wednesday, May 21 at 7
p.m., Medfords Freedom Park
will be host to the local starting
and ending point for the 11th an-
niversary of the National Ride of
Silence. On this day, cyclists
worldwide will take to the roads
in a slow, silent procession to
honor fellow cyclists who have
been killed or injured while bik-
ing on public roads. The Ride of
Silence also strives to bring atten-
tion to bicycle safety as well as
show that cyclists have a legal
right to share the road with mo-
torists. The motoring public, po-
lice and city officials often arent
aware of these rights, and some-
times are not aware of the cy-
clists themselves.
This is the 11th year of the Na-
tional Ride of Silence and the sec-

ride. The Ride of Silence is a free
ride that asks its cyclists to ride
no faster than 12 miles per hour
and remain silent during the ride.
The event will start at 7 p.m. at
Freedom Park.
Participants are asked to ar-
rive 30 minutes early to allow for
parking and registering for the
ride. Cyclists must also have safe
and operable bicycles, a safe hel-
met and be able to make the eight-
mile ride under their own power.
In 2003, Chris Phelan organized
the first Ride of Silence in Dallas
after endurance cyclist Larry
Schwartz was hit by the mirror of
a passing bus and was killed.
Since then the ride has grown
into a worldwide event.
Last year was the first Ride of
Silence for the Medford chapter.
Members of all major local bicy-
cling clubs participated. Organiz-
ers are anticipating that more
than 100 cyclists will be partici-
pating in this years ride. The ride
will follow a pre-determined
route through Medford.

loved one or friend in a tragic
auto and bike accident, said
Medford chiropractor Brett A.

near fatal accident myself in 2006,

sponse time to public works re-
pairs than before. Previously, the
municipal building would receive
many of its reports over the
phone.
If youre driving around, you
can take a picture, upload it, and
your GPS will upload your loca-
tion, Portocalis said.
Residents will be able to follow
the progress of a repair after re-
porting it and will receive a notifi-
cation when the repair is fin-
ished.
Residents will also find more
convenience in monitoring coun-
cil meetings.
The meetings will be streamed
live online thanks to the installa-
tion of a camera at the Public
Safety Building.
In addition, all meetings will be
archived and available for view-
ing on demand. After the minutes
of a meeting are approved, indi-
vidual discussions will be time
stamped on the stream.
If theres something con-
tentious on the agenda, you dont
have to go through the two-hour
tape of the council meeting, you
can click on that thing and itll be
synched up, Portocalis said.
According to Portocalis, the old
website was tough for many resi-
dents to navigate, leading to a lot
of phone calls to the municipal
building.
There was an assumption that
the public would know how the
government operated, Portocalis
said of the old website. People
try to maneuver the current web-
site and they wont click through
two or three times.
The new website aims to make
navigation easier by making fea-
tures easy to find.
Portocalis said there were op-
erations, such as online bill pay-
ment, that many residents didnt
know about.

Some people dont know you can
pay your tax and sewer bills on-
line, she said. Were trying to
structure it and bring that for-
ward.
The hope is by adding specific
links, such as online bill pay-
ment, residents will find the site
user-friendly.
This is more critical now be-
cause we actually consolidated
the departments, Portocalis
said. While its more common in
other parts of the country, its less
common here.
Residents will see a lot of
changes on the township website,
but there are additional changes
happening behind the scene. The
townships content management
systems were overhauled to make
operations more streamlined.
Right now, the staff just re-
ceived all of the training on the
different facets of the software,
Portocalis said. The depart-
ments are responsible for their
own content and data.
Municipal personnel have al-
ready switched over to the new
systems internally. As far as the
website is concerned, Schultz es-
timated about two-thirds of it is
completed.
The mobile app will not be
launched at the same time as the
website. Schultz said the website
will be launched first, with the
app to follow in later weeks.

Police identify ATM
skimming suspect
The following information
comes from Lt. Joseph Friel of
the Evesham Township Police De-
partment:
Evesham Police have identified
and charged the male accused of
installing the Skimming device
and camera on a Bank of Ameri-
ca ATM in Evesham on April 26.
Within 24 hours of posting the
ATM surveillance photographs
on the departments Facebook
page, ETPD received dozens of
tips, which led to the positive
identification of a male from
Medford.
As a result of the publics assis-
tance, Evesham Investigators ob-
tained a search warrant for the
suspects home along with an ar-
rest warrant ($25,000). On May 6,
the New Jersey State Police
TEAMS Unit along with mem-
bers of the Evesham and Medford
Police Departments executed the
search warrant in the 100 block of
Tuckerton Road in Medford.
The suspect is still at large and
ETPD is asking that anybody
with information as to his where-
abouts to contact the Evesham

According to New Jersey State
Police, there have been 146 fatal
bicycle-automobile injuries in
New Jersey from 2002 through
2011.
There are many, many more
that are seriously injured. For ex-
ample, in Michigan in one year
there were 2,188 reported acci-
dents between automobiles and
bicycles. The largest percentage
of fatalities occurred in two de-
mographics, children 11 to 15
years of age and adults 45 to 54
years of age.
Many drivers are not aware
that bicycles are legally required
to ride in the streets and roads
and not on sidewalks," Warten-
berg said.
A brief ceremony remember-
ing family and loved ones who
lost their lives while riding bicy-
cles will be held, followed by ride
protocol and safety instructions.
This event is sponsored by Med-
ford Township and the Rock-it-
Riders Bicycle Club, and is sup-
ported by the Medford Police De-
partment.
Medford Police will be stopping
traffic along the route so
the ride will be safe and clear.
Bicycle mechanics will also be on
hand to check bikes before
the ride. Industry-related and
safety vendors will be on hand as
well.
The ride will return to Free-
dom Park around 8:30 p.m. There,
vendors, informational tables,
and activities will be available
from 6 to 9 p.m. for the partici-
pants and all supporters of this
awareness effort.
