Benefit of Video Flame and Smoke Detection
Applications
Situational Awareness

Flexible fire detection for challenging applications
Video Image Fire Detection (VID)
Conventional detection devices are
challenged by large volumes or high
ceilings
Smoke Stratification Issues
Sprinkler systems designed for building
protection, require heat to activate
First responders require early, actionable
intelligence to avoid costly fire damage
and firefighter injury.
Post fire event investigation

VID uses video analytics (software
algorithms) to emulate human-eye fire
recognition.
Analyze each frame (640 x 480) pixel by
pixel using Digital Signal Processing
(DSP) high and low pass filters
(4.5 million data points per second)
Converts 15 frames of pixel data to one
normalized pattern in one second.
Neural Network Trained with 1000s
of real and false fires.

Uses visible spectrum
video images from
stationary cameras
Looks at pixel luma
value
Analytic process
identifies characteristics
of flames
Alarm and video output
to user interface
Filter removes residual light,
leaving only light that is
originated from flames.

Large scale fire tests have been carried out by NIST in both
15m and 22m high aircraft hangars. These tests show that
sprinklers can be expected to operate in these high ceiling
areas as demonstrated by the following results;

For the 15 m high facility

The 2.0 m diameter pan fires with heating rates ranging from
approximately 5.6 MW to 6.8 MW, were the smallest size fires
to activate any automatic sprinklers. The 2.5 m diameter pan
fires (tests 6b and 8), which produced estimated heat release
rates of 7.7 MW also activated a number of 79 C to 93 C
automatic sprinklers. The 79 C sprinklers tested utilized a
quick response thermal element.
