about the creative way Eric Carle displayed the pictures and about the
different steps within the life cycle.

illustrations for his stories.

Day Two:
1. Review knowledge about the steps of the life cycle while relating to the
illustrations of the caterpillar.
2. Begin artwork collage project of making their own colorful caterpillars, use
illustrations from book as examples.
-- Have an outline of caterpillar and have students get creative with all
different colors of tissue paper to create their caterpillars.

Lesson adaptations for challenged learners:
- For students who might have trouble focusing or listening to the
teacher, you could play the video of the book being read aloud with
the pictures and illustrations throughout.
- You could also have them work in partners to create their caterpillar
tissue paper collages.
Lesson extensions/enrichments for gifted learners:
- For advanced students, you could go into more detail about some of
Eric Carles other books and compare themes and illustrations seen
throughout each.

Formative Assessment strategies:
- I will probe my students with questions about different life cycles they
know of, along with their understandings of different types of
artworks. This will lead into our discussion about the illustrations
portrayed in the book to show the life cycle stages.
Summative Assessment strategy:
- Students will create their own caterpillars to show their
understandings of how to create collages with tissues paper, as well
as the stages of the life cycle.

What student prior knowledge will this lesson require/draw upon?
- Students should have some knowledge about the different life cycles seen around themexamples: plants, humans, etc.
- Students should also have some awareness of different illustrations seen in picture books.
- Students should also know how to make pictures from tissue paper.
How will you engage students in imagining, exploring, and/or experimenting in this lesson?
- This lesson will engage my students by allowing them to think critically about how artwork can be displayed in many ways and how it can be related
to things we see in nature. It will also allow them to explore illustrations from other books as well as experiment with their own art projects like
creating tissue paper collages.

How will this lesson allow for/encourage students to solve problems in divergent ways?
- This lesson will encourage students to think creatively and inspire them to think differently just as Eric Carle explains in the video we watch together.
How will you engage students in routinely reflecting on their learning?
- We will have class discussions about what they knew previously, what they learned from listening and viewing the book and what they noticed from

the video about Eric Carle as an artist. Students will also be expected to explain their reasonable thinking behind their artwork as well as how the life
cycle works from a caterpillar to a butterfly.
How will this lesson engage students in assessing their own work and the work of peers?
- This lesson will allow for students to expand their prior knowledge of the life cycle, while relating what they know from nature to what they seen
through illustrations in the book we read. Students will also have the opportunity to show off their artwork in our classroom and maybe talk about
why they chose to create it the way they did.
What opportunities/activities will students be given to revise and improve their understandings and their work?
- Students will have the opportunity to listen to and view the pictures/illustrations of The Very Hungry Caterpillar more than once to gain a better
perspective and understanding of collages. Students will also improve their previous knowledge about life cycles by learning how a caterpillar turns
into a butterfly.
What opportunities/activities will you provide for students to share their learning in this lesson?
- They will be able to work within groups or partners to create their caterpillar art works and they will be able to present to the class why they chose to
make them the way they did. Students will also be able to relate their caterpillar collages to the artwork and illustrations they saw from the book.
