The Rabbi and the Mugwamps

On a far, far away planet, 60 light years from our Solar System, is a planet called
Mugalli. On Mugalli live the Mugwamps, they are the living creatures that inhabit planet
Mugalli; this is a planet mostly made up of huge mud swamps, and a small portion of dry
land. Located within the mud swamps of this planet is where the Mugalli have erected
cities of elaborate mud houses, factories and high-rise mudscrapers.

Each of the Mugwamps work hard, and have a similar living dynamic as do those who
live on the planet known as Earth; however the Mugwamps, being far more scientifically
advanced than the humans who inhabit the Earth, pride themselves as being the far more
superior life form.

Many things being as they are, the Mugwamps intercepted thought waves from the
foreign planet, as they have, off and on for periods of time throughout their history of
being able to do so. On this particular day, Muggsie Mugwamp over heard a conversation
about something the Mugwamps have become increasingly curious about; a conversation
in which their subject; a certain humanoid whom has, for the past 55 years, been having
with this other being known to the humanoid as “God”. What Muggsie found so
interesting was in the way in which the subject communicates with this God thing.

Because of the growing curiosity regarding this whole ordeal, more Mugwamps felt the
necessity to find and test other humanoids (the Mugwamps certainly were not at all sure
they much cared for the Humans to possess something that the Mugwamps themselves
did not have!) Over time it became clear that a crew of Mugwamps would need to go to
Earth, as it was recently overheard that this God thing is the ruler of all planets, and all
solar systems, and the Mugwamps are very curious as to why they have not also been told
of this ruler before. With Muggsie being the spokesperson for the Mugwamps, he hand
picks a trustworthy, albeit overly curious crew, in order to find out what this God thing is,
and why so many on the planet Earth have such a close relationship to this thing.

…Once on Earth, Muggsie sought out to locate this humanoid called by many; a Rabbi.
Certain that this Rabbi will be able to introduce him to this God thing, as it has sound to
him as though they are very close to one another.

Muggsie: “Hello, my name is Muggsie from the planet Mugwamp, and I am told that you
are the one they call Rabbi, and that you know God. Is this true?”

Rabbi: “Well, hello to you Muggsie, and welcome to Earth! Yes, I am known as Rabbi,
and I do indeed know God. What can I do to help you?”

Muggsie: “Well, on my planet, we have been studying you humans, and have discovered
that you know the God of all things, and that he is greater than any king. That you have
this other thing called religion that allows you to be close to this God.”

“We have grown quite curious as to this God king, and religion thing – and I am hoping
that you could tell me more, as we have never heard of such a being in all our history,
and wonder why the God thing, it supposedly being the ruler of all things, has not
presented itself to the Mugwamps as well?

Rabbi: (Rabbi, understanding that this was a divine opportunity to share with another
world – the Jewish faith, became very excited.) “Why Muggsie, I would be very
delighted to introduce God to you and your fellow Mugwamps. First we should start at
the beginning, that is, with the History of God. Do you have time to listen and learn?”

Muggsie: “I have been sent to spend time enough to learn of this God; however, our trip
is very long and that must also be taken into account, please to begin.”

Rabbi: “In the beginning God spent six days and nights creating heaven and earth and all
that dwell within. After creating the material universe, God Created man and woman in
his likeness and gave them reign over all the living things of the Earth.”

“There was a serpent that tempted the woman God called ‘Eve’, with wisdom was she to
eat of the tree of life, which was the only thing God, had warned them against, but Eve
gave in and ate of the tree, then herself had tempted Adam her mate. God found them out
and exiled them from the Garden of Eden where they lived, in anger. Because of this act,
sin was born into our world.”

“Although God was a loving God, he demanded obedience, which since sin was born into
the world, found that God’s people were constantly disobeying God’s commandments, so
he sent a terrible flood to the Earth and except for the pairs that he had a man named
Noah gather of all the animals on the Earth, and the few humans who believed Noah
about the flood, and put them all on an Ark that God had Noah built to weather the storm
in.”

Muggsie: “Why would God want to destroy all that he built, this does not sound like a
loving God, he sounds rather destructive after all. It does not make sense to me why the
humanoids would desire such a ruler.”

Rabbi: “Well, like any parent, God tries to teach us to behave, he wants to guide us to a
better place so that we will all get along and learn to love one another.”

Muggsie: “I guess that makes some sense, however I am not sure we have need of such a
thing on Mugalli, we are a peaceful people. But I was sent to learn all that I can, so please
to continue.”

Rabbi: “The Jewish have many beliefs and customs; first we believe that we are the
chosen ones, meaning that we are the more special of all of God’s creatures. And we had
a leader named Moses who spoke with God directly, up on Mt. Sinai, and God inscribed

tablets with what is called His Ten Commandments. These are a set of rules written to
guide the people closer to God. If we follow these ten rules we will be with God when we
die and pass from this Earth.”

Muggsie: “What type of rules are these ten commandments? Must you be born a Jew in
order to find this closeness to God after death? What about those who believe in God, yet
practice another religion?”

Rabbi: “The Ten Commandments relay like this:”

“I am the Lord your God, you shall have no other god to set against me. You shall not
make a carved image for yourself or the likeness of anything in the heavens above, or on
the earth below, or in the waters under the earth.

You shall not make wrong use of the name of the Lord your God; the Lord will not leave
unpunished the man who misuses his name.

Remember to keep the Sabbath day holy. You have six days to labor and do all your
work. But the seventh day is a Sabbath of the Lord your God; that day you shall not do
any work.

Honor your father and your mother.

You shall not commit murder.

You shall not commit adultery.

You shall not steal.

You shall not give false evidence against your neighbor.

You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, his
slave, his slave-girl, his ox, his ass, or anything that belongs to him.”

“No one knows who will be selected to stand next to God once dead, which is why we
must work hard in order to find favor in God’s eyes, so that he will accept us.”

Muggsie: “This seems selfish to me, and as though even if we try our best it may still be
unacceptable to this God thing. I am not sure I want Him in my life – perhaps he
complicates things more unduly for those of you who believe?”

“What are some of the common practices in Judaism?”

Rabbi: “Well, we read the Torah which is the five books of Moses, on which we study
daily. Some children continue to be trained in special schools to carry on the study of the
Torah.”

“Boys are ritually circumcised when they are eight days old, to honor the seal of God’s
commandment to Abraham. We only eat Kosher foods; those things considered Kosher
are listed in the book of Leviticus. Men wear leather boxes with scripture in them on their
foreheads close to the heart, in fulfillment of the Shema commandment, worn during
morning prayer rituals. Traditional Jewish men also wear a fringed prayer shawl, or talit,
whose fringes act as reminders of God’s commandments, and keep their heads covered
at all times, if possible. In addition, three prayer services are chanted daily in a synagogue
by men if there is a minyan (quorum of ten). Women can say them also, but they are
excused from rigid schedules because their household responsibilities are considered
important.”

Muggsie: “Well this is all that I will have time for today, I still must go on to study the
religion called Christian before next week. If I have further questions, may I come speak
with you again?”

Rabbi: “Yes Muggsie, please feel free to seek me out again. Thanks be, that your people
have come seeking out the One true God, and let us all remember the spirit of generosity
that God communicated to Isaiah: “My House shall be a House for all peoples.” Unless it
is for all peoples, it is not God’s house. May it happen speedily in our days.”

A Pastor Meets the Aliens

….After leaving the Rabbi, Muggsie felt curious still, so he and his crew sought out a
teacher of what is called the Christian religion, a man they call a Pastor. Because
Muggsie had decided that in order for his people to fully comprehend Religion and this
God thing; they would need to explore what they could of the three basic religions. After
having already visited with the Rabbi, whom is a teacher of the Jewish religion --

Muggsie and the other Mugwamps ventured on to meet this man who is called a Pastor,
the one who teaches of the Christian religion…

Muggsie: “Hello Sir, my name is Muggsie, and I come from a distant planet called
Mugalli, and I am a Mugwamp. I and my crew have been sent by our people to learn of
your God, a man whose name was Jesus; I am interested in learning of the main three
religions on Earth. Are you the pastor of the Christian religion?”

Pastor Kane: “Please to meet you Muggsie, welcome to planet Earth! Yes I am a pastor
of the Christian religion, and I would be honored to teach you Christianity.”

“Have you spoken to any other teachers of religion at this point?”

Muggsie: “Yes I have; I have spoken to the Rabbi, who taught me portions of creation,
and some of the Torah and Jewish customs.”

Pastor Kane: “I assume that you were left off where the Old Testament ends and what
the Christian religion refers to as the New Testament. So I will start from there.”

“God had a son with a human woman named Mary; this is called the Immaculate
Conception, as Mary was still a virgin when she conceived this child called Jesus Christ.”

Muggsie: “Now Pastor, how could someone who has never mated become with child,
how can you believe this to be true?”

Pastor Kane: “God is the creator of all things, it is not a far stretch to have faith that this
would be in God’s realm to accomplish; He was able to create the Earth, the Moon and
all the stars….Now where was I? Oh yes!”

“Jesus is a Holy child he is without fault, and although Mary was unmarried, she was
chosen by God to carry the Christ child, and instructed Joseph, who was Mary’s fiancé to
take Mary as his wife. However, because the reigning king, who had heard that a new
king was to be born, and this king, being of a fearful and jealous nature, ordered all males
born in his kingdom within the a two year period to be killed (thereby absolving him of
the threat; yet God knew the evil within the heart of the king and forewarned Joseph that
he must make haste with Mary, leaving the region for a period of time so that Jesus will

be safe. So Joseph left with the pregnant Mary to a town called Bethlehem where Jesus
was born in a manger.”

Muggsie: “Tell me why such a king would be born in a Manger where the animals lie?
Did God not feel his son was worthy?”
Frances Hunt

Pastor Kane: “On the night Jesus was born, all of the Inn’s were full and the manger
was all that was available to Joseph and Mary.”

“During this time – there were three wise men that by God’s direction followed a star
bearing gifts in order to pay homage to the new born King.”

“As Jesus grew, it became apparent that he indeed was special, having a way with people
and a keen interest in all things of God. Jesus was very knowledgeable of God’s ways
and would take to spending time teaching at the Synagogue. Soon, Jesus had a large
following of those whom believed in him; however, because he made claim that God was
his father, it also caused there to be those who were opposed and called Jesus a
blasphemer. This would be a label that would in time cause him to be crucified on a cross
wearing a crown of thorns on his head until dead.”

Muggsie: “Why did people want to hurt the Christ if he was God’s son?”

Pastor Kane: “There were those who were jealous, and those who did not want to see
the old way’s end. People are afraid of change. Although Christ was murdered, he would
rise again on a day we call Easter.”

Muggsie: “My sensibilities are telling me to ask how Christ would rise again if he was
dead, but I suspect you would tell me that God, being the Creator of all things is capable
of doing such a thing, and that I must have faith to believe. Is that correct?”

Pastor Kane: “Very good Muggsie! You learn quickly!”

Muggsie: “Pastor Kane, please tell me of the holidays and artifacts that the Christian’s
celebrate and use.”

Pastor Kane: “Well, each winter we celebrate the birth of Christ on a day that is called
Christmas, everyone shares a great gathering with family, friends, and oftentimes
strangers as well! This is a holy day, and gifts are shared amongst all, there is also a big
feast of wonderful, traditional foods, such as; roasted turkey, candied yams, pumpkin
pie…”

“On the day that Christ arose from the dead, we celebrate Easter, which is similar to
Christmas, only we do not exchange gifts, but some do offer the children baskets of

treats, and have what is known as an Easter egg hunt; however, these last two traditions
are not exactly a part of the Christian religion, they are mans contribution to the
celebration.”

Muggsie: “What else do you do?”

Frances Hunt
Rel 134 – Week Two
An Alien Dialog
Page 7

Pastor Kane: “Well, we worship on the first day of the week – on Sunday’s; however,
there are those who have taken to celebrating on Saturday instead.”

“Also, many Christians wear a cross around their necks, some depict Jesus hanging on
the cross and some do not. This is to remind us of the great sacrifice Jesus made in order
to offer sinners another way to be saved, from the old ways, which were increasingly
difficult to uphold as time passed.”

Muggsie: “Why thank you for all of the wonderful information Pastor Kane! I hate that I
now must move on to locate someone who teaches the Muslim religion, so that I may
report back to Mugalli. It was good to meet you!”

…So off Muggsie and his observers went, in search of this Muslim teacher, which will
complete their quest to learn of the three main religions.”

The Mugwamps Meet the Ulema

The Mugwamps, growing weary and homesick are looking forward to the journey
back to their home planet; however, before they can venture back to their homeland, they
have one more stop to make…

Muggsie: “Hello Sir, my name is Muggsie and I am a Mugwamp, I and my people come
from a distant planet called Mugalli, we are a peace loving people; we were sent here to
study religion and are here to meet with the Ulema, are you Ulema?”

The Ulema: “Well Muggsie, we are delighted to meet you and the representatives from
your planet! Pleased to welcome you all! Come and sit down and I will teach you of the
One True religion.”

“We study from the book of Koran; this book maintains a complex and intricate
eschatology dealing with the end of the age and the coming of a great world leader or
Mahdi. The center of these events is at the end of the age in Jerusalem, not Mecca, and
Jesus is one of the principle participants in the coming great judgment.”

Muggsie: “But sir! I thought that Jesus was the son of God? How do you say he is
merely a participant? Now I am confused; explain what is Mecca, and the coming of the
great judgment.”

The Ulema: “It is taught that Jesus was born of a virgin, without human father, and lived
a sinless life. He is given titles of honor bestowed on no other prophet and He is pictured
as a wandering preacher who performed miracles and spoke beautiful words. To Him was
given a book for His people – the Gospel, but the book was lost or hopelessly distorted,

and Jesus was rejected. His people attempted to crucify Him, but Jesus was saved when
someone took His place on the cross or tree and He ascended into Heaven, having
promised to send a comforter (Muhammad).”

“There have been many legends which surrounds Jesus; it is said that at some time He
will return to Earth and marry. We even have a grave site reserved for Him.”

Muggsie: “So, it appears that both you and the Christians believe in Jesus; only the
Muslim believe He was not a God – but a prophet, and the Christians believe that He was
a God?” “Indeed this is quite interesting.”

The Ulema: “Well, as usual, the Christians are Wrong!”

“It is said that Imamite doctrine of the Mahdi at one point merges with the return of
Jesus, another prominent figure of Islamic eschatology. The doctrine of the return of
Jesus is as described in the Sunnite.”

“He will descend in the Holy Land at a place called Afiq with a spear in his hand; he will
kill with it al-Dajjal (the Antichrist of Islamic eschatology) and go to Jerusalem at the
time of the Morning Prayer. The Imam will seek to yield his place to him, but Jesus will
refuse and will worship behind him according to the Sharia of Muhammad. Then he will
kill the swine break the cross, and kill all of the Christians who do not believe in him and
will form on single umma of those who submit to the will of God. Jesus will establish the
rule of justice and will remain for forty years, after which he will die. His funeral will
take place in Medina, where he will be buried beside Muhammad, in a place between
Abu Bakr and Umar.”

Muggsie: “What kind of God would rule with hate, anger and murder, rather than love
and patience? This does not seem right…”

The Ulema: “But the al-Dajjal is a very bad person – or thing, and anyone who worships
him will also be very bad. Rather than have this bad in the land would it not be best to
eliminate them who do?”

Muggsie: “It would appear so, however the Mugalli are a peaceful, and loving people,
we do not rule with bias and hate. Please explain further.”

The Ulema: “In the Shiite traditions the function of killing the Dajjal is reserved for al-
Mahdi. In a long tradition Ali is reported to have answered a question regarding al-Dajjal,
whose features are vividly described as having one-eye in his forehead and shining like
the morning star. On his forehead it is written: “This is the kafir (non-believer).” This
will be legible to both literate and illiterate persons. His emergence will be preceded by a
Frances Hunt
Rel 134 – Week Two
An Alien Dialog
Page 9

time of great hardship. Then Ali describes the manner in which he will appear on a
donkey, and his call will be heard from one end of the earth to the other. He will tell the
people that he is their creator and their lord.”

“Those who follow him on that day will become enemies of God, who will be wearing
something green on their heads. God will cause them to be killed in Syria at a spot named
Afiq, on Friday, three hours after the sunrise, at the hands of the one behind whom Jesus
will worship. Beware that his death will be followed by a great event. This event is the
revolution of the twelfth Imam.”

Muggsie: “Well he does sound quite frightening, I must admit, but truly, is all this death
necessary?”
The Ulema: “It will be a bad time Muggsie, so yes; in order to create all goodness and
blessings, death will be required in order to purge it of this evil.”

“It is said that all Muslims in every epoch, that at the end of time a man from the family
of the Prophet will without fail make his appearance, one who will strengthen the religion
and make justice triumph, and Muslims will follow him. He will gain domination over
the Muslim realm and he will be called the Mahdi. Following him, the Antichrist will
appear, together with all the subsequent signs of the Hour (the Day of Judgment), as is
established in the Sahih. After the Mahdi, Isa (Jesus) will descend and kill the Antichrist;
or, Jesus will descend together with the Mahdi, and help him kill (the Antichrist), and
have him as the leader in his prayers.”

Muggsie: “Why, this is quite a tale, and quite interesting; however, what is the proof
guiding these beliefs?”

The Ulema: “My child, do you not know that belief is only a bit of faith for that which is
unseen? What is quite interesting is that Islam does have a belief system about the end of
the ages, the coming of a great Iman Mahdi, a great judgment, a heaven and hell, and a
God who is basically merciful and compassionate.

“In the Arabic Language Islam means submission and peace. A Muslim is a person who
submits to the will of Allah and finds therein a sense of peace. However there is no peace
and the sad fact is that the end of the age we live in is marked by deception on a world-
wide scale-because truth has been so widely and universally rejected by mankind.”

“I grow weary now, after having told of the history of our religion -- let us retire for now,
and resume our conversation tomorrow after prayer.”

…Muggsie was filled with apprehension about all that he and his fellow Mugwamps had
learned thus far. “This religion thing has been very enlightening; however, there is much,
perhaps too much in which one must consider the facts as the humans claim them to be. It
Frances Hunt
Rel 134 – Week Two
An Alien Dialog
Page 10

is wrought with contradictions, but also with similarities between all of the three religions
I was sent to study and learn,” Muggsie thought to himself. “What am I to report to my
people when I am now, even more confused than I was to begin with. Hopefully
tomorrow when I resume my studies with the Ulema, I will learn something that will help
to guide my decision, yet I am not as hopeful as I would like to be.”

…The following day Muggsie and his fellow Mugwamps returned to the Ulema in order
to learn more of the Muslim religion.

Muggsie: “Good morning, we have returned in order to learn what was left out of our
previous meeting. I must admit I have become rather confused by all that I have learned,
and am hopeful that we will be further enlightened so that by the time we leave your
planet we can make a decision as to whether or not we will adopt religion, and which one
best suits our culture on Mugalli.”

The Ulema: “We the Ulema understand your confusion, there is much to consider for
you and your people; however, there are those whom believe in different versions of the
one true religion. This school of thought can be debilitating for anyone who would
choose the incorrect path – there is much to lose; now with this being said, I would like to
suggest that you and your people consider all of the logical aspects of all that you have
learned, both here with us, and elsewhere on your journey, seeking deep within
yourselves to find your truth.”

“Now, yesterday we covered the history of the Muslim religion, today I would like to
cover more of our beliefs and practices.”

“From the Muslim point of view the Islamic shrine known as the Dome of the Rock built
on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem is an answer to, and a denial of, the attractions of
Christianity and its Scriptures, providing the faithful of Islam with arguments to be used
against Christian theology. The inscriptions are seven hundred and thirty-four feet long in
all, amongst the lengthiest inscriptions in the world.”

“There are also many important Islamic festivals such as:

Muharram (1Muharram)
The Islamic New Year – The month marks the beginning of the Islamic liturgical year.

The Islamic New Year is celebrated relatively quietly, with prayers, readings and
reflection upon the hegira.

Mawlid al-Nabi (12 Rabi 1)

the founder of Islam.

The day is commemorated with recollections of Muhammad’s life and significance.”

Eid al-Fitr (1 Shawwal)

The Celebration Concluding Ramadan – The month of fasting, ends with the festival of
Eid al-Fitr. Literally the “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” Eid al-Fitr is one of the two
most important Islamic celebrations.

A sense of generosity and gratitude colors these festivities. Although charity and good
deeds are always important in Islam, they have special significance at the end of
Ramadan. As the month draws to a close, Muslims are obligated to share their blessings
by feeding the poor and making contributions to mosques.

Eid al-Adha (10 Dhu’l-Hijjah)

The Celebration Concluding the Haji – Eid al-Adha is the Feast of Sacrifice, and
commemorates the prophet Abraham’s willingness to obey Allah by sacrificing his son
Ishmael. According to the Qu’ran, just before Abraham sacrificed his son, Allah
replaced Ishmael with a ram, sparing his life.

This festival is celebrated by sacrificing a lamb or other animal and distributing the meat
to relatives, friends, and the poor. The sacrifice symbolizes obedience to Allah and its
distribution to others is an expression of generosity, one of the five pillars of Islam.

“Well Muggsie, I believe that we have summarized the Muslim religion and have taught
you all that we can within the time frame available, I hope that you will now be able to
take something back to your planet that will be considered worthwhile information. We
have been pleased to receive you and your people, and find you to be a pleasant people.
The Ulema bid you farewell and a safe journey back to your homeland.”

Muggsie: “Thank you for your willingness to spend this time with us. We have learned
many things on our journey to Earth; it will take much thought and consideration on all of
our part. We feel that our trip has not been in vain, and have enjoyed meeting the people
of your planet. Shalom Ulema….”

…Much had been presented to the Mugwamps on their journey to Earth in the way of
religion, and learning who or what God is; however, there now seemed more questions
then ever before, and the Mugwamps spent the entire length of their trip home in
reflection and review of all they had heard…Yet once back on their home planet they
would be facing the Elders, and although they have a great deal to share, they are
undecided as to whether or not they could make much sense out of it all. Let alone if they
did or did not believe in the God thing or in religion…

Muggsie: “Hey look Maganni – the trip is close to an end, we now have a visual of
Mugalli! Do you see it in the north sector, west of Zorcane?”
Frances Hunt
Rel 134 – Week Two
An Alien Dialog
Page 12

Maganni: “Ya Hoo! Look at that – what a site for sore eyes! Gosh I have missed our
land and our people! It has been a long, long time since I have had a taste of mugooma,
my taste buds are positively salivating for such a treat!”

“…Muggsie…about Earth, have any of us been able to recommend anything regarding

adopting or opting out on religion?”

Muggsie: “Maganni, no, nobody has been able to suggest anything concrete, and frankly,
if anything, I am more confused than ever I had been. I am not so sure we really want to
have religion on Mugalli. It definitely has its up and down sides; however, it seems that if
there truly is a God, and we forsake him, what will we be denying our people? Than on
the other hand, it seems to invite anger and animosity.”

The Mugalli Counsel: “Hello Muggsie! So, you have gone to the Earth planet to study
about religion, how did that go? Have you learned much?”

Muggsie: “Hello to you Counsel! Yes I have gone to earth and have learned about
religion, here I have prepared a paper for the Counsel to read, which I turned in to you
upon my return two days ago so you will be informed. As you can see, this religion and
God thing is quite confusing in all of it varied views and in the ways that the different
religions agree and disagree. With that being said, I am afraid I feel no need to disrupt the
dynamics of the way we do things on Mugalli. Religion seems to bring out the worst in
the people, and causes much anger and animosity, and because our people are brought up
to love and respect one another (which we do), and we are good in spirit, I feel that to
risk that for something new, could very well change us into something sad and
ineffectual, in the least, or turn brother against brother at the worst. I feel that this would
be too high a price for something I am not convinced even exists.”

The Mugalli Counsel: “Well said Muggsie! After reading through your report, we here
on the Counsel have had the same reservations, and were left feeling quite confused as
well.”

“Thank you and your Crew for being willing to explore and decide such a difficult task.
We the Counsel commend each of you!”

“Love and peace to you all!”
