About Munnar
The hill station of Munnar is situated in the Idukki District in the eastern part of Kerala, bordering
the state of Tamil Nadu. Popularly known as Kashmir of the South, Munnar is well connected to
all the cities in Kerala.
Munnar is located amidst mist-covered mountain ranges and evergreen forests of the Western
Ghats, at a varying altitude of 1,600 m (5,249 ft) to 1,800 m (5,906 ft) above mean sea level, at
the foot hills of Anamudi, the highest peak of the Western Ghats (2,695 m).
History of Munnar
The name Munnar was aptly given to this place since it is located at the convergence of three
rivers, which are Mudrapuzha, Nallathani and Kundala. The vast tea estates and coffee
plantations are the primary base for the flourishing economy of Munnar, besides tourism.
The recorded history of Munnar can be dated back to the 10th century, though many pre-
historic relics linking Munnar to the Stone Age has been discovered. During the 17th century, a
group of people of Tamil origin, known by the name Muthuvans migrated to Munnar and they
settled at Munnar and nearby areas.
By the 19th century, Munnar had become a part of Anchunadu, a small tribal kingdom believed
to be one among the earliest tribal settlements of South India. The fertile soil of Munnar was
used for the cultivation of cardamom, ginger, etc. in those days.
It was the Spanish planters who brought Munnar to the limelight and the first notable personality
to visit this place was the Duke of Wellington. John Daniel Munro from the British East India
Company visited Munnar around the middle of the 19th century and he gathered permission to
acquire 588 sq. km. of land from the Maharaja of Poonjar.
With the assistance from Kannan Thevar, the tribal chief of Anchunadu, Mr. Manro and his
companions took over some of the mountains and hills of Munnar. In 1895 Messrs Finlay Muir &
Company procured Munros land and in 1976 Tata-Finlay Ltd. procured it.
Things to do in Munnar
Munnar is an idyllic tourist destination with rolling hills, grasslands, dense forests, brooks and
rivulets, diverse flora and fauna, numerous waterfalls, lakes, tea plantations and walking trails.
Some of the major attractions of the region are CSI Church - the landmark of Munnar,
Eravikulam National Park, Attukal Waterfalls, Elephant Lake etc. Because of its scenic beauty
and pleasant climate Munnar has become a popular destination for honeymoons as well as
weekend getaways.
Food & Shopping in Munnar
Page 2/18
Munnar offers all types of cuisines for the tourist. There are many restaurants and small
eateries that offer good food.

Shopping at Munnar should include tea and spices. Tourists can buy tea sold by the KDHP
(Kannan Deven Hill Plantations)
Travelling to Munnar
The nearest airport to reach Munnar is at Kochi, about 125 km away. The Kochi International
Airport is not only well connected to the rest of the country but also to different parts of the
world. From the airport taxi services are available which might cost around INR3000.
The nearest railway station is at Angamaly, which is at a distance of 120 km. Angamaly lies on
the Ernakulam Thrissur route and is well connected to other major cities in India. Taxis can be
availed from the rail station to Munnar.
Munnar is also well connected by road. Bus services are available from different parts within the
state as well as neighbouring states. These are operated by the state governments but private
operators abound. Most of these buses stop at the Town bus stand in the main bazaar area
near the confluence of the river and the Tata headquarters.
The best time to visit Munnar is from the months of August to March. The summer months of
April and May are also pleasant with temperatures ranging from 15 - 25 Celsius. During the
winter season the temperatures are lower with crisp mornings and bright blue skies and the
nights being chilly. Heavy woollens and adequate protection should be taken against the cold.
For those who love the rains, Munnar would be an ideal place in the monsoons with lush
greenery and rolling mists everywhere.
Accommodation Options in Munnar
Hotels in Munnar range from 5 star to Budget hotels with all the facilities. Situated on the
highest peak in South India, Munnar is ideal for trekkers, honeymooners and even family
travelers.

MUNNAR carpeted with tea gardens
"Munnar is a place fully carpeted with tea gardens in a unique style, with wonderful climate, cool
and a peaceful place. Not at all polluted, easily accessible, just four and half hours drive from
Cochin airport, with beautiful landscaping, waterfalls & wild life makes it really beautiful. The
highest tea plantations at Kolukkumulai Tea Estae is at a 8000 ft, we had a bumpy jeep ride but
the view is really beautiful and exotic, its a MUST SEE this Organic Tea Factory, 75 years old..
I really loved Munnar and would love to visit it again.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Good Seafood is available here, Veg and non- veg both are
available in the city restauarants, we liked their local snacks made in coconut oil Acchappam
and banana wafers. Even home made chocolates are available here.Spices
Natural face packs, oils, aloevera gel and soaps are worth shopping. Tea gardens, flower
gardens, kolukkumalai tea estate, Mattupatty dam, Rajamalai National park and Chinnar wild
life Sanctuary are a must visit not to be missed out.
Activities & things to do: Trekking, shopping, Ayurvedic massages and spa. The location itself
is so beautiful you would never want to mis any of its glimpse. You can also find wild elephants
here,if you want to see them you could find them early morning during sunrise near the lakes.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: The nearest airport and railway station to
Munnar are at Kochi, which is 130 km away. Many buses and taxis ply to Munnar from Kochi,
Coimbatore and Madurai. Nearest railway station to Munnar is Aluva which is 120 Kilometers
away and Ernakulam Town and Ernakulam Junction which are 130 kms ...
But the ride is with lots of twists and turns so do take care of your medications." - Rehana ,

Astoundingly beautiful!
"Munnar is one of the most beautiful places in India that I have visited to date. Nestled among
green hills, the natural beauty of the place takes your breath away. Visitors to Munnar should, in
my opinion, book a room in a hotel high up in the hills which serves good food and laze the day
away among the clouds. There is nothing to do in Munnar town itself. The only advantage of
staying in town is proximity to the food joints. None of them being worth more than a mention,
you would do well to live among the clouds.
Gently rolling hills, tightly carpeted with green tea bushes or the tall, thin eucalyptus is the
standard and very soothing sight that one can expect when one visits Munnar. Since we were
close to plucking season on our visit, the hills had a fresh, young, green look to them, very
pleasing. Another wonder of Munnar is the clouds that descend on the hills from early afternoon
onwards. They float like gauze over the hills, inexorably covering everything in sight with a
white, semi-transparent film. Although we stayed at town-level and not in the hills, the clouds
came right down to town to meet us, one evening. Staying up in one of the hotels that are built
into the mountainside would be a great way of lazing away the days but only if you have no
Page 4/18
health problems. The hotels in the hills generally involve a steep drive up the hill and are built
on multiple levels that involve a fair degree of climbing to access say, the restaurant or other
amenities. Not for the elderly, people susceptible to the cold or couples with young kids who will
need to be carried at some point of time. Again, if you are on a budget trip, then the petrol count
matters, so staying in town is better in that case, since it is closer to the tourist spots.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: The weather in late October was cool and positively cold in
the evenings. After dinner, as I sat in the hotel lobby, I watched guests walk out for a post-
prandial walk and nip smartly back in before they had taken more than two steps. The wind is
bitingly cold on the days that it rains (and it rained almost every afternoon that we were there).
Do carry warm clothes if you plan to go in the October-January period.
The dearth of eating places in a town that advertises itself as the Kashmir of South India is
disappointing. We ate at Gurus but hesitatingly as the place seems to be a local eatery for the
lower classes. The fish fry was nice though and the waiter enthusiastic. Surya Soma looked
cleaner and served a great fish fry. The Kerala fish curry here is authentic and very, very spicy
and burned our tongues. There are plenty of eating places in Munnar but hygiene was a little
doubtful in most of them. Hotels are a plenty. Check the room and the view out before
registering if you are there in the non-peak season. Dont go without a booking in the peak
season. There are power outages in Munnar so be sure to carry a torch if you intend to go
exploring in the nights. Night exploring is not advisable though since the fog is out in strength at
that time. The beauty in the day is, on the other hand, unforgettable.
Activities & things to do: Munnar has a number of tourist attractions, all within 15 kms of the
town. Matupetty Dam is set in a breathtakingly beautiful background of hills and woods, the blue
waters of the dam adding to the charms of the natural scenery. One of the most panoramic
backgrounds I have come across and a wonderful photo opportunity. Echo Point is a dammed
up narrow twist of the river which, by the way, does throw back echoes if you call out loudly
enough. There isnt much to do at either of the points except perhaps shop for knic-knacks and
home-made chocolate at double the cost in town. Echo Point boasts of paddle boating (with
compulsory life jackets). Mid-way between both points is Kundala Lake where you can go
speed-boating. There is a beautiful flower garden about 1 km outside the town which although
small, houses a variety of flowers that would please most flower lovers. Unfortunately, the lack
of space means the flowers are displayed in a row of pots rather than in a natural setting but
nevertheless, do stop for a quick visit. There is a Tea Museum about 2 kms from town run by
the Kannan Devan Company. Here, for the exorbitant sum of Rs.75 per head, the workers
lecture the visitors in highly accented and largely un-understandable English about the process
of tea-making. If you have landed at the right time, you can see the machines in motion and the
tea powder coming out at one end of the machinery. But we didnt or at least if we did, I didnt
cotton on to the event. A complete waste of time in my opinion. A few other attractions are
Periyakanal falls and the National Park. If you go to the National Park, go early as the queues
are long and the Nilgiri Taal (mountain goat) gets more elusive as the day progresses. Cars are
not allowed beyohd a point in the National Park, so be prepared for a long walk here. Do check
on the timings of the tourist spots before setting out on a sightseeing tour. The speed-boating at
Page 5/18
Kundala Lake shuts down for an afternoon siesta at 2:30 pm while the Tea Museum shuts down
at 4:30 pm. Entry fee for most of these attractions ranges between Rs.5 to Rs.10 per head with
some places charging an extra Rs.10 for a camera.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: It is cold here, take warm clothes." -

An Encounter with Pristine Nature
"A great hill station with lots of sight seeing like hills, fogs, tea gardens, dams, water bodies,
water falls, forests and what not ! A visit to Munnar is a package deal. Its a small unspoiled hill
town, where you can trek to nature at its premium, giving it a feeling that you are the first man in
the world to discover it.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Food is available every nook and corner but roadside joints
offer food with a south Indian touch. But good hotel restaurants offer food of your choice.
There are a wide number of sight seeing points all around Munnar. One must plan to stay at
Munnar for two to four days to cover all of them.
There is nothing much to shop at Munnar except for small souvenir items
Activities & things to do: Visit Echo Point, Kundala, Attukal water falls, Eravikulam wildlife
sanctuary, Rajamala Wildlife Sanctuary, Devikulam Hill Station, Anamudi peak, Mattupetti Hill
Station, Chinnakanal Waterfalls, Chithirapuram Hill Station and Lock Heart Gap. Try to cover
Marayoor (40 Km from Munnar) also if time permits. One can also trek to unknown destinations
aroud Munnar.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Nearest Airport as well as Rail head is Kochi
about 130 km away. Buses are available from Kochi, but hiring a cab helps in coming to close
contact with nature, there are a number of unknown sightseeing points on the way to Munnar,
none of them will be missed !
So what are you waiting for ? Pack your baggage and you are out for an encounter with pristine
nature, you will never forget !!!" - Dipankar Saha, Ranchi, 3 years ago
A pleasant vacation
"Munnar, the Kerala's most preffered hill station, is a very nice place for a vacation in summer.
Cool climate, misty evenings, unending tea estates, a number of dams and lakes and spice
plantations...all make the vacation memorable.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Lots of lodging and dining options are available in and
around Munnar. Number of fine hotels and resorts are ready to welcome visitors.
Important places to see are: Tata tea museum, The Floriculture garden, Echo point, Mattupatti
dam, Top station etc and an arrged visit to a tea estate and tea factory- that enlightenes city
Page 6/18
dwellers of the process of making tea, it's various grades and also the correct method to make
best tea cup !!!!
The best tea is grown at the highest mountain called Kolukkumalai and this special tea is the
one you must buy. Ofcourse local spices are available in shops but if one plans to also visit
Kumali, then best to buy spices there.
Activities & things to do: The atmosphere is really invigorating. One can just take in the fresh
aromatic and the misty air to feel on top of the world. Visit to tea estates and spice plantations
are not to be missed. Other destinations like the Top station have beautiful scenery of green
valleys turning to bluish mountains, where one can just watch and relax.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Munnar is about 130 kms from Kochi railhead
and the airport. Private taxis, and state buses can take you there in about four to five hours.
If one has own arranges car, then best is to stay a little away from the town to get the real feel of
Munnar." - VRV, Mumbai, 3 years ago
Fabulous Munnar
"Munnar is one of the famous hill-stations in South India and is one of the star attractions of
God's own country - Kerala. This is a place where you can experience the beauty of nature and
cool weather - an ideal place for sightseers, honeymooners and those who want a place to
relax.
Munnar is located 138 kms from Kochi and is a hill station and is more than 2000m (6000 feet)
above sea level. The landscape of Munnar has abundant greenery and tea estates all around.
Wherever you look, you see great views of misty mountains and greenery.
The weather in Munnar is very cool and pleasant. Even in summer, on a sunny day, you can
feel the cool breeze. And nights in Munnar are very cold, even in summer. If you are visiting in
winter, make sure you carry sweaters and other clothes.
You can visit Munnar round the year, but the rainy season can be avoided as the rains are very
heavy and you may not be able to move around freely. Summer is the best time to visit, if you
want to escape from the heat of the plains.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Food:
Non-vegetarians have many options. But options for veggies are few. They include:
a) Saravana Bhavan in the town centre, where you can enjoy authentic south indian food. Great
food, but the place is very crowded and place is a bit cramped
b) Mahaveer restaurant : offers North Indian food, including Gujarati, Rajasthani thalis. Food is
ok, but rates are exorbitant.
c) Purohit restaurant : is in Hotel Dhanyashree and offers North indian food. Taste though is
average and food is overpriced.
d) Srinivas restaurant in the town centre is another popular place for vegetarians.
Page 7/18
Sight-seeing:
Lots of places to see in Munnar. View points, dams, lakes. You can very easily spend 2 days in
Munnar as there are lots of places to see.
(See the section on activities for sight seeing details).
Shopping:
Spices and tea are the main items for shopping.
Varieties of tea are available and Munnar is a treat for tea-lovers. You can also get cashews,
spices like pepper, cardamom, etc here.
Home-made chocolates are another attraction.
Lots of shops in the town centre and also located at all sight-seeing points. Make sure you
negotiate as the price printed on the package (except for tea) is not necessarily the selling
price.
Try out the fresh carrots available for sale at most places.
Activities & things to do: Munnar has plenty to offer for tourists. Some of the popular sight-
seeing destinations are:
a) Rose garden : A well-maintained botanical garden (Rs.10/- entrance)
b) Matupetty Dam : You can view the dam and the water and take photos here. Also, don't miss
boating. Speed boat ride (Rs.350/- per boat) is one of the main things to do in Munnar
c) Echo point : has a beautiful, clear lake where pedal boating is available. Also, a good place to
hear the echo of your voice.
d) Kundala Lake : A popular picnic spot, you can go for pedal boating, row boat or the shikara
ride here. Horse riding is also available.
e) Top station : A not-to-be-missed place. From the parking area you need to walk for 5-10 mins
before you enter Tamil Nadu. Pay Rs.15/- and you can climb down a hill (steps cut out of stone
with rope railings) around 200 metres to reach the viewing platform. The view from here is
awesome. But your return journey uphill is going to be tiring. Elderly people and heart patients
avoid this place.
f) Eravikulam National Park : Beautiful sceneries here. Though the only wildlife you can see is
the Tahr (mountain goat).
g) Waterfalls : There are many waterfalls, you come across before you enter Munnar.
Chinnanakal waterfalls located after Devikulam is a must-visit, the place is enveloped in mist
and is great.
Other places to see include:
a) Chinnar wildlife sanctuary
b) Tata Tea Museum
c) Pothamedu View point

Elephant rides are available at many places. Don't miss it.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Nearest Airport and Railway station to reach
Munnar is at Kochi, which is 138km away. The drive from Kochi to Munnar takes around 3.5 to
