In essay 1, the student writes 23 Material process sentences, 8 for Mental and Existential
process, 5 Relational process and 1 Behavioural process. The percentage of process use as
illustrate in the pie chart below.









Essay 1
As we can see in the pie chart, 51% from the essay are Material process, 18% are
Mental and Existential process, 11% are Relational process and only 2% are Behavioural
process. Therefore, we can say that this student does not make or construct any sentence
which has Verbal process. As reminder, the students are required to write an essay about how
to save environment from pollution. Thus, this student uses more action verbs in her essay
and most of the verbs are repeated for more than three times. As I read the essay, this student
lacks of vocabulary so that she uses same action verbs in her essay. She does not use variety
words or vocabulary. Actually, it is really hard to find grammatical sentences in this essay.
There are many sentences which hardly to understand their meaning. So, we define the
sentences base on the verbs uses in the essay. She uses more action verbs as she urge the
reader what to do or to make to save the environment. In our opinion, this student does not
use any verbal process because she might just think what actions should be taken to save the

For this sentence, because the sentence is not grammatical, so it is hard for us to define the
participant as we only can define behavioural process.
Essay 2 is longer than essay 1. This essay has three pages. Therefore, there are
more numbers of processes in this essay. This essay contains 43 Material process, 16 Mental
process, 15 Existential process and 2 Relational process. There is no Behavioural process and
Verbal process in this essay. The following pie chart illustrates percentage of processes use.

Essay 2
As in essay 1, essay 2 has many repeated action verbs. This student also tells people what to
do, what action should be taken to save the environment. The most common words she uses
are make, do. She also repeats same sentences for few times. We do think this student also
lack of vocabulary. She has many ideas as we can see she tries to make the essay long but her
vocabulary stop her idea. Thus, she always repeats her words and sentences. She does not
make any sentence which consist Behavioural and Verbal process maybe because of her poor
vocabulary. In our point of view, the topic itself makes the student never think that they could
use say, talk, suggest, laugh, cry and so on. Below are examples of each process:

Most of the sentences written in the essay are hardly to understand and we could
not catch up the authors goal. We try our best to understand and define the sentences. As we
mentioned before, there are many repeated words and sentences in the essay.
In essay 3, we can find 34 Material process, 18 Mental process, 4 Existential
process and 3 Relational process. Pie chart below illustrates the percentage of essay 3
percentage:

Essay 3

Since essay 3 is a short essay, so there are not many process in the essay. The authors
vocabulary is limited, therefore the student could not expand her essay. As usual, this essay
contains Material process the most. She mentions what are the actions cause the pollution and
what are the activities should be done to save the environment. As in essay 2, in essay 3,
there are no Verbal and Behavioural process. In our point of view, if the student has variety
choice of vocabulary, she might use different vocabulary and level. If the student at least has
basic of constructing sentence, maybe we could find There are, There is and son on in
her essay. Most of her sentences are hanging or there are no subjects or objects. Examples of
